My ex told me that my daughter's book study is having a dinner to mark the final meeting.
I think it is with some sadness that this meeting is ending.

Whats Your Level of Maturity? Spiritually That Is.....
by AllTimeJeff inon a recent essay i posted here re: gilead, i made reference to the fact that a "mature" person from the jw/gb point of view is one who accepts without question the teachings of the governing body of jehovah's witnesses, whereas "immature" ones question the teachings of the gb.
i used this as a reference point concerning the gb's cynical use of the bible.
but it seems to have struck a chord.

I was definitely considered mature and the brother that was pointed out as a shining example.
I can just imagine how low and pathetic I'm seen as now!
In line with what you wrote, I remember a lifelong friend was talking to my then JW wife, and this poor sister broke down in tears talking about how others had always considered her a weak one in the congregation.
Not a healthy organization.

"It's Snowing Like A Bast^rd"
by minimus inso said a friend of mine who was driving.
we are supposed to get another 10 to 12 inches of snow here.
white out conditions are terrible here!
-

Oh my god, what a disaster we had -THE SATELLITE DISH FILLED WITH SNOW AND WE DIDN'T HAVE TV!!!!
The horror of it all!
Then a total idiot (moi) got out the ladder, carried a homemade climbing pole up onto the very steep metal roof, tied off the end of the homemade climbing pole to a tree on the far side of the house to prevent it slipping off the ridge and catapaulting me off into oblivion, then climbed up this precarious contraption and cleaned off the dish.
Did I mention this was during the blizzard?
But it's a story with a happy ending - TV Reception returned!

Would you drink a glass of water with just 1 drop of poison in?
by stillajwexelder inwould you drink a glass of water with just 1 drop of poison in?.
that is an illustration i have heard well over 1 dozen times?
we need pure waters of truth -why touch anything tainted by chrsitendom.

Yes - an illustration I heard a dozen times at least from some JW speaker or another. Always delivered as though it were profound and intensely clever, when it really is neither.
I love the comment above that JW "proof" is usually some combination of analogy, urban myth or illustration.
One of my favorites was a CO who told me in a discussion on science how one of the Governing Body had stated in a talk that there weren't enough fossils that supported evolution to fill a coffin - as though that was all the proof I would need to change my belief in evolution! I told him that, first of all, that was just simply untrue, and second of all, there was a pretty good chance that that GB member barely had a high school diploma and was certainly no scientest!

question on atheism vs. god
by bonnzo ini am, for now a witness on the outside, and still believe in god most of the time.
i have read dawkins "the god delusion", found it pretty interesting and helped me understand why athiests believe the way they do.
but i always have questions.....one that really bothers me about deism is the thought that god has always existed and always will, had no beginning and no end.

Vinny wrote: "I have debated this thing a thousand times with atheists now on many places. My beliefs are based on thorough examinations and an honest look at facts and evidence as they are."
Considering the total LACK of facts and evidence supporting the existence of the biblical god, it's hard to imagine what your thousand debates consisted of. I agree with Gymbob. I wouldn't have any trouble believing a god existed - except for his total abscence in any tangible way from anything in modern existence. He never talks, never answers prayers, never shows himself, never provides any real evidence that he exists.
Abbagail - gotta say there is also not a shred of evidence for anything you wrote about your god. The "god" of the Bible is a monster, a dysfunctional psychopath.
My six year old grandson can easily prove his existence, but an all powerful god can't? Utter bullshit. God could reveal his existence in an instant.
Why hasn't he? Because he simply doesn't exist. God is an idea in the minds of men - and not a very good one.
Sorry for all the emphasis on the masculine there - just doing it for convenience. God can't reveal HERSELF either, 'cause she also doesn't exist!

Horrible conduct by congregation Elders at my cousin's funeral.............
by RULES & REGULATIONS inmy cousin passed away last week from cancer at the age of 49. the cancer spread so fast it took our family by surpise.
we figured she had a couple of years instead of months.
she left 4 children(3 were baptised and 1 was disfellowshipped a couple of years ago).

My Mom is still a JW, and 86. She's doing well, but no one lives forever. I'm going to send this link to my siblings - none of whom are JWs. I just want them to know what it may be like for me when my mom passes. I'll certainly need their support to walk back into a Kingdom Hall, and this thread gives a lot of good examples of what can happan.
Thanks all for sharing these experiences.

Not sure what your question is, but I've found that the more I learn about evolution, the more fascinating and reasonable it is. Also, the more I learn, the more unreasonable is belief in a supernatural world - the one we see is amazing enough.
You might want to read the works of Paul Shepherd. He shows how religion developed over the past 10,000 years as humans went from a hunter/gatherer culture to a settled, agriculture-based one. Prior to that humans for hundreds of thousands of years saw themselves as just another animal, and though they may have believed in a spirit world, it wasn't in the "punishing gods making moral rules to keep you in line" way that was developed as humans went from small tribal groups to high population national groups.
I'm an atheist. When god comes out of hiding and starts to reveal him/her/itsself, then I'll reconsider.
