The DO Dennis Raftopolis used that train illustration all the time. Also one about a battered fiddle in the hands of a master musician and another one about the two sets of tracks on the beach - ALL of them stolen from some writers in Christendom.

For the years that Dennis was our DO, he had a problem with his voice. He used to always have me on stage with him and I read his scriptures for him to give his voice a break.

God, I was a bit of a brown noser! But I also remember all his plagirisms!

And that angels in the ministry thing is really pathetic.

Got Some Encouraging "Bad" JW News

an active jw was in touch with me yesterday, and we were catching up on a few things.

i found out that a witness i was friends with just daed.

he went to college and i'd always wondered if he has as much trouble with the jws as i thought he might.

No, the DAing had nothing to do with his going to college, I don't think. My friend was actually appointed after he graduated.

I'm trying to get in touch with some of these folks. I've been away from the congregation for 10 years or more, so I've lost touch with a lot of them. Will start mining more of my connections over the weekend to see if I can make some contacts.

A phone call from the elders.

my husband and i left the org about 6 months ago and in voicing our views we were shunned.

the elders who were 'friends' treated us with cold efficiency to the letter of their law.

one older elder played 'good cop' and invited us over for a heart-to-heart.

An active JW was in touch with me yesterday, and we were catching up on a few things.

I found out that a Witness I was friends with just DAed. He went to college and I'd always wondered if he has as much trouble with the JWs as I thought he might. He'd become an elder a while ago.

Then it seems that three other multi-generation JW mid-20-somethings also were al DAed, all on the same night.

Stirrings in the congregations. I know we've had a bunch of newbies in this same situation.

This has to be deeply disturbing in the congregations.

Anyone else hearing stuff like this?

2008 DC - Is higher education/college mentioned?

There are other threads on here from folks who've attended the DC. There is anti-higher ed stuff in at least one talk, and the drama also has an anti-ed message.

The growing irrelevance of the Watchtower message

in many ways it appears as if the watchtower movement is slowing down.

a number of changes over the last few years certainly show that the watchtower is in a period of transition.

they have cut back on the number of magazines they print as well as lowered the cost of production by eliminating things like hard backed books.

I've been in steady contact with a JW elder, and he confirmed that this 2034 date is being discussed to a degree in the congregations, and for the reasons given above. No official stance on it, of course.

I've been re-reading Crisis of Conscience, and one of the really interesting things Ray brings out is is how many of the Gov. Body members were willing to consider alternatives to the 1914 date. It's obvious from what he experienced that among the leadership of the Witnesses, there is serious concern about the accuracy of that date - even 20 or 30 years ago!

The fact that the GB turned around and made belief in the teaching that Jesus took up his throne in 1914 a a requirement when they were investigating the apostacy at Bethel in 1980-81, just shows how morally bankrupt those men were!

It's a talk for PUBLIC reproof. It makes no sense to do it for a private reproof - I mean most of the reason for a private reproof is that it's not public knowledge!

Ban The Internet

the thought occurred to me that if post-secondary education is to be avoided, why would the wts not make a similar stance about the internet?

all dubs in good standing should burn their books and their computers... really, the internet has great propensity to open people's minds and expose them to different ideas and viewpoints.

in itself it doesn't promote critical thinking, but it certainly offers fodder for thought and expression.

They haven't banned college and they haven't banned the Internet.

They strongly discourage using either in ways that would endanger the "spirituality" of members. I seriously doubt that they will take any different stand in the future.

i know that has probably been covered ad infinitum on jwd.

so...... if jehovah is omnipotent, then there is nothing he can't do and nothing he doesn't know.. and, according to jws (as well as most other religions), god is love.

therefore he had to have known, even before creating all of creation, what would happen.

God's limiting his ability to foreknow is one of the oddest teachings of the JWs - and very, very difficult to wrap your head around!

It's an absurd idea created by believing another absurd idea - that there is an all-knowing, all powerful creator.
