  Long Term Effect of Conti & Similar Cases?

  i was commenting in another thread this morning and saw speculation that the conti verdict will hasten the wts' decline, beyond just the money they may have to pay in that case itself.

  i have seen this mentioned a number of times and it got me thinking and doing a bit of research.

  i think the speculation and hope is that it will give rise to similar lawsuits which will meet with similar success.

  I was just sent a Wikipedia article from a JW about the JW child abuse policy. It had a bunch of handwritten circles and underlines and asterisks on it. I guess those were his markings. I told him I'd rather use the directives that are issued from the WT, not statements from a site that anyone could modify. I then sent the BOE letter of October 12, 2012 that offered no mention of contacting law enforcement authorities.

  His response:

  "You have here direct info from the Office of Public Information and also memos provided to elders from the same department and it is available to the elders."

  Are R&F allowed to read BOE letters?

  Single Malt Whiskey. A preference?

  i am not a drinker but i hear single malt whiskeys are good.. yesterday at the liquor store, i asked a nice man, who also was looking over the bottle display, if he could tell me which one does he prefer and why.

  one of the store clerks, came by, listening, and said she preferred the same bottle.. i bought the one they preferred:.

  Awww... this is heartwarming. :)

  Does your host/hostess know your background? I find myself swooping in and diverting attention when people ask my boyfriend questions with respect to politics or holidays in social situations.

  If you're the new gal in the group, they'll want to get to know you. Stay with safe subjects... your job, restaurants you've never been to... "has anyone been to that new restaurant called...X? What's it like?"

  I love LG's suggestion too. That's safe. :)

  If you have kids, mention them - if not, ask another about theirs.

  You'll be fine!

  Most of my friends associate "cult" with extremist religious fanatics (think Jonestown & Manson). Take Dazed's advice only if you're okay with your potential friends becoming the friends you could've had.... LOL

  Did you notice the family prayer started with "Our heavenly Father..." what's up with that? I thought I read on here that barely a prayer is said without the name "Jehovah" being used...

  The son's a creepo. I think the father and son both know how she died and it wasn't a suicide...

  I do however, disagree the Conti case somehow sets a precedent that the WTS is on the hook (legally) for any abuse by a MS, or rank and file member, if that's what you are implying.

  I think you'll understand when I say I hope I'm right and you're wrong. *giggling*

  Additionally, I have to hope that families and friends of these elders who have to suffer through a court mess imposed by WT policies will open an eyelid and ask themselves if this is fair to them.

  The Society is correct in warning their elders of an increasingly litigous society. I can easily see a hungry attorney opting for an attempt at a prize.

  How does precedent become precedent? Just takes one case with a unique twist. California's case gives attorneys elsewhere a model now.
