My brother in law who was Df'd a long time ago had a baby die at birth last year. They have just had another child and his sister and grandma don't even want to have a picture of him sent to them. They even rang to say not to send one. Have to be seen to be taking offense.
I think people like that are sad and pathetic.

When should you Disassociate yourself?
by happytobefree ini have been having discussion with my sister (relative), who is an active witness, about writing a letter of disassociation.
the reason being is that i have not attended the meetings in over a year and it's been 4 years since i have went out in the jw ministry.. i going to try to sum this topic up.
my sister think that i should not da myself because i have not done any immoral act in her thinking.

Yes, TW...I would have used my tape recorder a lot more with hindsight.
I do have some great moments though - like seeing the look on an elders face when he saw the elders manual on my pocketPC and the vein on his head started to throb
If I've learned anything, it's that even the seemingly 'nice and genuine' elders are just 'bastards' who will stab you in the back and lie about what you say. Seems they lack either the guts or the intelligence to stand up for what is right and for truth.
But, like Mr president said in Independence Day:
"We will not go quietly into the night..." -

What should the WTBS do?!?!
by LDH inwell guys sorry i haven't participated much lately, i've been really busy.
but, i do have a question that i would really appreciate all of your input on.. it is no secret that young people are leaving jws faster and faster.
it is no secret that most jws are disappointed, and hurt by lack of prophecy fulfillment.. so here's what i was thinking: i'm going to post some very personal thoughts on what *i* think they need to do in order to stop the loss of almost 50,000 disfellowshipped and probably 4x that to inactivity.

Yes, there will always be believers of something or other.
I think though that some of the success that the WTB&TS has enjoyed in terms of growth has been made by making specific, short-term promises which cannot be sustained.
I believe they are trying to move towards 'the end could be years away' while still keeping the enthusiasm going. Tough act.
The established churches have always been here for the long haul though, so to speak. -

Hi Courtney
Nice to meet you. I can hear the sound of the "welcoming committee" forming even as I type. I'm sure you'll soon get to know everyone.
How about telling us a bit about yourself? -

he he - the reason I brought this up is that it is currently happening to us !
The elders called round on Sunday afternoon about a month or two ago (first time in ages) and invited me for a chat at the Kingdom Hall the next Wednesday. I told them I would need more notice than a couple of days and couldn't really discuss things because we had guests.
Yesterday, I got a letter from they saying that I refused to talk to them (ironic since I have been asking them to answer my questions for ages) and that they 'accepted my disassociation', no doubt so they can announce it. Despite me making it clear to them both verbally an in at least three letters that I did not want to disassociate myself they will try and make out that I have.
That is, if they go ahead - I have sent a letter threatening legal action if they do and will also tell everyone that I can that we have not disassociated ourselves, despite what the elders tell them.
I'll post some scans of the letters when I get chance. -

It's worth pointing out that when an announcement is made that 'brother or sister so-and-so' has disassociated themselves it doesn't necessarily mean that they have.
If the elders want to get rid of you because they perceive you as a threat - if you are highlighting the inconsistencies in the teachings for instance, or the history, you have not done anything unscriptural and are actually telling the truth which can be backed up by what has been printed. Instead of disfellowshipping you, they can announce that you have disassociated yourself and no-one will question it, everyone will assume you have (unless you tell them otherwise) and the end result will be the same - friends and familly will be instructed not to talk to you. -

We're much happier now than when we were JWs
I have a much better job - coincidence? Maybe it's because it's *ok* to have a career.
We have better friends - fewer but *real*. If we were more outgoing I'm sure we'd have more. I can actually become friends with people at work now...go out with them etc...
We can buy the kids presents at Birthdays and Christmas without feeling guilty.
There aren't the guilt trips about enjoying sex so it has improved no end (although I like to think that it is really down to me...)
We aren't rushing to get to meetings every other night, things are more relaxed.
We don't have any worries about being *destroyed at Armeggedon* - the future is ours to shape.
We know our kids will not be hurt by a cult like we were. -

Give all their money to the poor and needy?
I don't think the belief system can be kept going...it is not built upon a firm foundation. -

Is it Biblical to Shun??
by charlie ini'm not a witness, but i know one very well and we have had many discussions on various topics.
we would both like to know, however, if it is biblical to shun the disfellowshipped/disassociated?
where in the bible does the society base the practice of shunning or groveling back for a long period of time if a person is sorry and wants to return to the church?

The scripture they quote is 'not even say a greeting to such a one', I can't remember where it is off hand.
Unfortunately, they miss the next bit which is '...but keep on admonishing them...'. How can you admonish and encourage someone if you are not speaking to them?
Interestingly, there was a WatchTower a while ago which I think was about Reprooving where they used the same scriptures and arguments that they use to back up 'not talking to disfellowshipped ones' to show that you should speak to reprooved ones and encourage them.
I'm sure a better bible student than me will be able to tell us the scripture...anyone?
