IS THERE AN ALCOHOLIC IN YOUR LIFE?
A.A.'s message of Hope
Copyright 1976 by A.A. World Services, Inc.
All Right Reservedis there an Alcoholic in your Life?
... AA's message of HopeIf someone you love has a drinking problem, this booklet will provide you with facts about a simple program of recovery. Through its help, over a million people who once drank too much are now living comfortable and productive lives without alcohol.
For six decades, Alcoholics Anonymous has been working successfully for men and women from every kind of background. Before these people came to A.A., most of them had tried to control their drinking on their own and, only after repeated unsuccessful efforts at such control, finally admitted that they were powerless over alcohol. At first, they could not imagine life without it; they certainly did not want to admit that they were alcoholics. But, with the help of other A.A. members, they learned that they did not have o drink. They discovered that life without alcohol not only was possible, but could be happy and deeply rewarding.
Often those closest to an alcoholic find it hardest to see and admit that someone they care about can be an alcoholic. Such a thing just can't be true, it seems. In their eagerness to deny the depth of the problem, they may for a time believe the alcoholic's promises. But the repeated breaking of these promises and the increasing difficulties finally force those living with the alcoholic to acknowledge the truth.
Then a desperate search for a solution begins. Feeling that all their love and well-intended attempts to help have been wasted, they become deeply discouraged. If you have felt like this, take hope from the experience of A.A. members' spouses, relatives, lovers, and friends who once felt the same way, but have seen the problem drinkers they care about freed from the compulsion to drink.
In this booklet, you will find answers to many questions that people asked both before and after the alcoholic in their lives joined A.A. If the problem drinkers laugh at the idea that they are in trouble with alcohol, or if they resent any such suggestions, the following pages may help explain what you can and cannot do. If the alcoholic has already joined A.A., the information that follows will help you o understand the A.A. way of life.
Perhaps the best brief description of what A.A. is and what it does is this short "Preamble," usually read at the beginning of every A.A. meeting:
Alcoholics Anonymous is a fellowship of men and women who share their experience, strength and hope with each other that they may solve their common problem and help others to recover from alcoholism.
The only requirement for membership is a desire to stop drinking. There are no dues or fees for A.A. membership; we are self-supporting through our own contributions.
A.A. is not allied with any sect, denomination, politics, organization or institution; does not wish to engage in any controversy; neither endorses nor opposes any causes.
Our primary purpose is to stay sober and help other alcoholics to achieve sobriety.

From AA's website:
ALCOHOLISM Alcoholism is a rough word to deal with. Yet nobody is too young (or too old) to have trouble with booze.
That's because alcoholism is an illness. It can hit anyone. Young, old. Rich, poor. Black, white.
And it doesn't matter how long you've been drinking or what you've been drinking. It's what drinking does to you that counts.
To help you decide whether you might have a problem with your own drinking, we've prepared these 12 questions. The answers are nobody's business but your own.
If you can answer yes to any one of these questions, maybe it's time you took a serious look at what your drinking might be doing to you.
And, if you do need help or if you'd just like to talk to someone about your drinking, call us. We're in the phone book under Alcoholics Anonymous.
A Simple 12-Question Quiz designed To Help You Decide
1 Do you drink because you have problems? To relax?
2 Do you drink when you get mad at other people, your friends or parents?
3 Do you prefer to drink alone, rather than with others?
4 Are your grades starting to slip? Are you goofing off on your job?
5 Did you ever try to stop drinking or drink less and fail?
6 Have you begun to drink in the morning, before school or work?
7 Do you gulp your drinks?
8 Do you ever have loss of memory due to your drinking?
9 Do you lie about your drinking?
10 Do you ever get into trouble when you're drinking?
11 Do you get drunk when you drink, even when you don't mean to?
12 Do you think it's cool to be able to hold your liquor? -

Hi, Lilacs-
I was wondering that too (what are the signs). This link seemed to provide some insight: http://www.thewayup.com/newsletters/121501.htm

Let me state that I am in no way being a smart alec (after all, you are one of my favorite Poster's). I can't imagine what you must be going through emotionally. Do you think that your son may already be an alcoholic? Perhaps if you want to be really hard on your son, call the police on him the next time he comes home intoxicated. Maybe that will shake him up? It may not, I don't know. Does he have a Driver's License? If so (and if he has access to a vehicle), you need to be as hard as you can on him and those who supply him with booze. God forbid that he or someone else gets injured or killed while DUI.
I hope everything turns out well for you and him! {{{{{Lilacs}}}}}

Uff!
Dana, I feel you. JWs (kids AND parents) have to keep telling themselves how much fun they're having and how happy they are. None of which they would have to do if they were truly happy.

Forget about that JW kid! Weren't the other letters awesome? It brings back wonderful memories of when you and me (and Gary) were kids and we celebrated Xmas (before the JW conversion). Do you agree?

Below is a copy of excerpts from a newspaper column. It's actual letters from kids of different ages regarding their experience with Christmas. The things the children wrote are adorable! However, one of these kids is a JW (their letter is highlighted in Yellow). Please take the time to read these (especially if you have or love children!)
Tell me if you think the JW kid is already a JW robot or not.

It was Christmas. I got a Christmas tree. Then I went home. I decorated the tree. I got to put up my ornament. I got to put up all kinds of ornaments. Then it was time for Christmas, I went in the tub, then I said good night, and I went to bed. My mom tucked me in. The next day I looked at my toys. -Seth W.
Last Christmas when I was six my parents made sure that I didn't knock over the tree. I had lots of presents. It was snowy and windy. I couldn't wait! I was so happy! My parents drove me to my grandma and grandpa's, we ate dinner then we had presents. Then we went home, the next morning my parents woke me up and there were lots of presents. They gave me a computer game. I got a stuffed puppy. Then we had a pretty Christmas. -Alison T.
I remember for last years Christmas I was sledding down my back yard hill on my sled. It was red. When I go inside my mom makes me some hot chocolate. When I go in after my hot chocolate I decorate the tree with my mom. I decorate it with light's, star's, reindeer, and a smore. -Nathan K.
On a very very cold Christmas I had my very best friend Nicholas come over. When we went out side the snow was ten feet high. We played Candyland. Then we went inside to have Christmas dinner. -Erica M.

Something I'd want to do for others is make them happy. I like including my friends and being nice to others. When you make someone happy you always get a warm feeling inside you. Doesn't that feel good? I like to be kind, caring, and loving. I like being considerate of others and using my good manners toward them. I like to make things for others. I also wanted to thank my friends and family for the things that they do for me!
Below is a poem that explains how it feels to be nice to others.
Being nice, is not paying a price
It feels bad to be cruel
Then you don't rule
So be nice, it's an easy price
It feels good
In the neighborhood!

My favorite Christmas memory was when I was in a great Christmas play. I had a big, huge, main part. It was so exciting. It was only with my church and I was only going to have a small part, for the 7 time (I was 10 at the time). But then the girl with the big part didn't want to do it. So they appointed me! For the first time I was going to have a big part. In my opinion I did great. -Britta Anderson
I remember it was Christmas eve, and my family and I where all curled up by the fire watching "Jingle all the Way." We were sitting there and all of a sudden it started to snow. My brother and I raced to the door and started to put our coats on. We than ran outside. The snow was falling very gently in big snowflakes. Every one glistened in the moon light. My brother and I played out there for hours. Then it was time to go to bed and wait for Santa. -Ashley Whaley
My favorite Christmas memory was very funny. It was two days before Christmas and we were having my family over on Christmas, so we were getting ready. I got home from school and the table was all set up and everything. My parents told us that we can't go under it or even touch it, but we did anyway. It was Christmas and we were opening presents, when my parents went downstairs to get something. All of a sudden we heard them calling us down. We were walking down the steps when the table was really an Air hockey table. We were very excited and that was the best trick my parents ever played on us. -Ryan Wallgren
My favorite Christmas memory was when I was down stairs with my family opening presents when I saw one of my presents move. I went over to that present wondering what it could be. I held it up, shook it, and I herd a squeal. I started opening it gently and still wondering what it could be. But right when I opened the box, leap! Bouncy balls like you would never believe. They started bouncing around the halls and I must say, our dog will never be the same. She was leaping around trying to catch the 3 bouncy balls. Yes! She caught one. But then she let go and tried to catch the other 2. -Aaron Roonzani
My favorite memory of Christmas was when I went to the Bahamas. Everybody in my family was there. My cousin Erin and I went fishing with her dad. Her dad Andy caught a shark. I named the shark Chucky 'cause it made funny noises. We kept Chucky in a bucket upside down with water. After one hour we put Chucky back in the ocean. The next day I went fishing and caught a poisonous fish. My mom went around the island and found out I was the only person who has ever caught one. -Brianne Brady
This kid is what I envision TR did as a kid. LOL! ---> The Best Day I remember is the day of the snow ball fight. Kids from all over gather together and divide teams and start the war. Forts are built and balls are made, jelly balls, Ice balls, slush balls, pellet balls, and explosion balls, explosion balls are a mix of slush, ice pellets, snows, salt and fire crackers, crackers are lit thrown into an enemy fort and explode sending chunks of ice and snow flying in every direction. the battle lasts all day and at the end, chunks of snow lie everywhere end the last man standing on either side wins. -Paul Nixon
Here's the JW kid : Every year, we have the memorial of Jesus Christ. We go to the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses. We sit and listen to one of the men, which we call brothers since we are united in a way, give a talk or speech. Then for 5 minutes, we pass around the crackers on a glass tray, and glass filled half-way with wine in our rows. I remember the first time I got to pass the wine and crackers to the next person. I needed some help from my mom. It was fun! I can't wait till this April to do it again! -Stephanie N.
Compassionless kid ---> My favorite Christmas memory was when I found out that my grandma was taking the whole family on a cruise. This was because she got a lot of money because my great grandma died about a month earlier. And I'm really excited because it is this year and I'm going to go on my first plane ride! -Matt Slind
Last year around Christmas I lost my swimming suit during a practice at an Oakdale Jr. High. On Christmas, I got a present from my Grandmother, and it was a sheet, a bed sheet! There was a note on it that said, "I thought you might need this!" I was so embarrassed! All my relatives were laughing at me! My grandmother game me that! -Katie Zimny
I went to get a drink of water one night and I saw my mom and dad putting stuff under the tree so I went down the stairs and I watched and they were putting presents under the Christmas tree so then I found out that Santa didn't really exist and so I said to my mom and dad "What are you doing and they just told me that they were Santa. -Charlie Anderson
