  this statement appears to be absolute truth if you were to ask any one of jehovah's witnesses to answer the question: who can one turn to for help in making positive changes in their life?

  the literature that they read is peppered with examples of people who once were violent or drug addicted or had other addictions such as alcohol or gambling and are now one of jehovah's witnesses.

  first, do you believe that one can only make a change by studying the bible with jws?

  No JW could expalin it, of course. But the WTS would insist that you are really NOT happy, that you are misguided or blinded or, better yet, a lover of pleasure rather than a lover of the Watchtower Society God.

  This statement appears to be absolute truth if you were to ask any one of Jehovah's Witnesses to answer the question: Who can one turn to for help in making positive changes in their life? The literature that they read is peppered with examples of people who once were violent or drug addicted or had other addictions such as alcohol or gambling and are now one of Jehovah's Witnesses.

  Consider the example of a man named Adrian in the 11/15/03 WT on page 24. He "smoked, drank, was immoral, had a tattoo, dyed his hair in a 'punk' fashion, was exteremly violent, etc." Then, one day he found a WT magazine and started to study with JWs. The article says he changed because he put on "God's personality". It says he also learned about God's qualities like love, kindness, goodness, etc.

  Then the article credits God's holy spirit for helping Adrian control his temper. Says Adrian: "Unlike many of my former friends who are now dead, I am alive and enjoying a happy family life." The article concludes: "He is living proof of the Bible's power to change lives for the better."

  Now, I would like to reach out to those who may be lurking (especially those who are JWs who may take everything they read in the WT at face value).

  First, do you believe that one can only make a change by studying the Bible with JWs? If so, then you are living in a sheltered world. There are thousands of examples where a person has "cleaned up" his life. And, it didn't matter what their religious background was. Heck, it didn't even matter if they believed in God or not. The fact is that people can make certain changes in their life when they are mentally strong enough and prepared to do so.

  Next, tying into to the first point, Adrian didn't say "All my former friends are dead". He said "Many are dead". Unfortunately, the article doesn't elaborate on what the statuses of his living former friends are, but I would conclude that some must be living clean, moral lives now and I betcha they aren't even JWs.

  Also, the article's concluding sentence is interesting. It does acknowledge that the Bible has the power to change lives for the better. This is actually a great conclusion because many (millions?) people who believe in the Bible credit the Bible for their change in life, too! And, they are Protestant, Catholic, Methodist, Seventh Day Adventist, Baptist, Jehovah's Witnesses, and many other Christian-based religious groups.

  Concluding, there are many ways to improve your life. Some ways include the Bible and other ways do not. It all comes down to your own mentality and your heart (and sometimes a little will-power! )

  the 'rabbit proof fence' is an australian movie that tells the story of some aboriginal children who escape from a camp established by evil white australians with the mentality of the biblical joshua.. it's just been released in the us.. if you want to understand australia and australians you should see this movie.

  it tells a story that should deeply shame all modern australians, but sadly, many, maybe a majority, are not ashamed!!!!.

  it was made by phillip noyce, who has also directed good movies like, patriot games, the bone collector, clear & present danger, the saint.. noyce & his male partner live in a funky old house at palm beach nsw, and their home & lifestyle was recently featured on national tv in an australian show called "burke's backyard.. hope this link to a site for the film works..... .

  I forgot to add...

  You MUST view the 'Director's Special' on the DVD. The youngest of the girls had to be the most adorable thing I have ever seen! Plus, when they talked about the scene when the girls are first kidnapped, it made me cry like I was cuttin' some onions.

  Several months ago I posted how much I enjoyed (for lack of a better term) this movie.

  I happened across it one day when it first came out on DVD. I rented it even though I had never heard of it. Then, coincidentally, my neighborhood theater showed it on the "big" screen. I went and saw it again with some friends that never saw it before. Then, I went out and bought it and I now own a copy.

  By the way, on the previous thread, I recall that some Aussies didn't think this movie was true in its depiction.

  i went and saw 'mystic river' yesterday (it's my day off!).

  *THIS IS NOT A SPOILER. FEEL FREE TO READ ON*

  I went and saw 'Mystic River' yesterday (it's my day off!). I went to the first showing (1:00 PM). I was the first one in the theater but I wouldn't be the last. The audience was made up mostly of elderly folks. Anyway...

  The movie was very 'dark'. While not graphic, it does have some chilling scenes of child abuse. This movie touches on all of your emotions (especially anger and sadness), including a few laughs (very few). It's definitely not your typical 'Hollywood' movie.

  Sean Penn's character scared me yet I still had sympathy for him for most of the movie.

  Tim Robbins' character caused me to hate him for much of the movie.

  Kevin Bacon's character was cool and smooth.

  Lawrence Fishburn provided a few laughs as the "everyone's guilty" partner of Bacon.

  This movie will be everything you'd expect (excellent acting, good and believable story) and NOTHING you'd expect (the ending and the plot twists).

  Oh, and how can I forget the Savage brothers. Bad boy thugs they are in this movie.

  Go see it, but be prepared to not walk out at the end of that movie with a smile on your face. It ain't gonna happen.
