Yes, Freddy was nuts. His biggest mistake was to be surrounded by sycophants and so not realize that he himself was capable of error. Knorr was also deluded by the same mechanism.
"When King Saul dies..." was a saying heard in Bethel in the late 1970s as reported by Ray Franz and referred to his uncle Freddy Franz. Freddy was sure that 1975 would be the Big A until he decided that it was going to be a year earlier; this did leak to some congregations.
Changes did occur shortly after King Saul Freddy met his maker in December 1992; this was the beginning of the end of the 1930 generation doctrine that linked the Big A to those living in 1914. I'll wager that had been plenty of GB opposition to the generation doctrine but it took Freddy's death for the decision stalemate to be broken.

Nathan KNORR announced the big A was coming in 1975 to best friends....
by restrangled ini have posted this under various topics but it just keeps getting skipped over.
i don't care how many times the wtbs denies the 1975 predictions, if a member of the gb told his good friends, and they in turn told their friends doesn't that amount to over riding anything written prior to and after 1975?.
the po in our hall was in his 50's and a very good friend of knorr's.

Let's just get something straight about 1975.
by WTFBBQPWNT innobody ever said that the end was coming in 1975.. all the hype about this date that has continued all the way down through today came from a talk in the early 70's by fred franz.
in this talk, franz pointed out the significance of the 7 creative days and how they correspond with 1,000-year time intervals.. he then said, "could the end come in 1975?
there's so much wrong with jehovah's witnesses from their rigid legalism to their faux love, but let's call a spade a spade about the 1975 thing..

My guesses, in order from most to least probable:
1. There's no big annoucement; just a minor change in procedure or policy.
2. The voluntary donation arrangement for literature will become somewhat less voluntary, possibly requiring JWs to purchase (and pay tax) via a captive third party corporation controlled by the WTBTS.
3. The introduction of registered giving where each JW family must pledge and contribute some amount each month; this will eventually result in formal tithing.
4. Removal of "inactive" as a semi acceptable status; any JW missing FS three or so consecutive months without a good excuse will be considered disassociated.
5. Internet usage, except for what is absolutely needed for work, will be banned or otherwise strictly regulated.
6. Underutilized KHs will sold (with the proceeds going to the WTBTS of course) and displaced JWs will have to travel further for meetings due to forced reassignment.
7. Dating, courtship, or marriage with an unbeliever will become grounds for disassociation. -

One month does not a year make, Joker10. Last year the US saw a zero percenct increase and I doubt it will be any better (for the WTBTS) this time around. Also, I tend to discard most of the reported numbers as fakery with the exception of the baptism count. The publisher count is suspect in part because of the changing requirements for activity. A similar comment could be made about pioneers of various types.
Oh, and how about the "land" of Alaska. It's been a state since 1959. And last year it had a three percent decrease. Maybe the WTBTS will finally fold it into the US national count to help avoid embarassment. -

Some five years ago I predicted that 2006 would be the peak year for the WTBTS and I'm not changing my forecast. If it turns out that I am wrong, I will admit my mistake and apologize -- unlike the WTBTS who is always wrong and never apologizes. -

Recently I bought a 32 inch Akai (a gift for my mom) and a 37 inch Polaroid (for my dad and I to share), both panel LCD HDTVs suitable for wall mounting. My preference is LCD for simplicity, longevity, and reliablity. Costs have really decreased due to competition and increased volume, so prices will also continue to decrease -- for a while. But why wait much longer when a decent 32 inch LCD can be had for under US$1000?

Pluto is no longer a planet!
by SirNose586 inwell folks, read it and weep.
they've made it tough for you and me, they really have.

Pluto should not have been classified as a planet in the first place when it was discovered back in 1930 by then 24 year old Clyde Tombaugh. Pluto fails to meet multiple traditional planet criteria: it is the smallest by far, it had a perihelion that intersected another planet's orbit, its eccentricity is the highest, and its ecliptic inclination is also much larger than any other planet.
To be fair, at the time of its discovery, astronomers thought that it was rather larger and more dense than it really is. Also, it was not until the past couple of decades that the nature of the Kupier Belt was understood; now we know that there may be dozens of Pluto-like objects scattered on the fringes of the solar system. Indeed, it was perhaps in the mid 1980s that there first began a movement by some astronomers to remove Pluto from the planet list. I think that they were unsuccessful for a long time in part because Tombaugh, who by all reports was a really nice and humble person, was still alive and many astronomers thought it would be an insult to him to "degrade" his discovery. (He passed on in 1997.)
Pluto is not the first body to get bumped. The asteroid Ceres, some 600 Km in diameter, was called a planet for a while in the 19th century before the nature of the asteroid belt was better understood. -

Well, without the hidden tube, it will be no mystery to the groudskeepers as to why the greenery is turning yellow.
On the other hand, I could do my sacred duty and, uh, "pinch a loaf" for Homer and Freddie to help fertilize the grass.
Another idea is to swap the real headstones for replicas that contain a hidden long life battery and a voice playback computer. It would be programmed to output randomly, once every few days to make it hard to detect. A great source of new JW demon rumors. Think of what you could have it say!
Knorr: "I'm burning, I'm burning! Help me, I'm burning!"
Franz: "Gehenna is not so bad; they let me help run the place. By the way, you'll be with me soon. Very soon."
