This is the first time I've felt gutted when someone I dont know has died.

What are the long term effects of having your life turn out to be a lie?
by sleepy inwhat do you believe are the long term effects of having your life turn out to be a lie?.
can a person really be brough up a jehovahs witness and live that life for 20,30,40 or more years and walk away unaffected?.
are the effects similair to say a person who doesn't know they have been adopted and finds out only as an adult their "parents" are not their real ones?.

When are JW's going to realise the GB's not writing books anymore?
by sleepy inwhen are jw's going to realise the gb's not writing books anymore?
.
jw's have got to be wondering why there hardly any new jw books coming out anymore.and most of the newer ones are just edited versions of old books.

Proof that 'art critics' are dumb
by Simon inthis time it's the messy daubings of a 4 year old being touted as 'art' and sold for big bucks.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/tv_and_radio/3701484.stm.
it always makes me laugh when they set them up and finally reveal that the mysterious new modern artists they have raved over is really a chimpanzee let loose with tubes of paint.. for me an artist is someone who makes art.

People who say "I could have done that" in referance to a picture are missing the point.
They didn't do it.
It all very well thinking you can do something after you have seen it, but try yourself to come up with an original idea and do it and try to make money from it.It harder than you think.
People buy or like art for many reasons.
Some admire the skill. Some like the picture. Some both.
A good design doesn't always need a lot of technical skill, but it needs for you to be creatively skilled.
Also it requires motivation.
People often don't realise the expense artist go to to create work.
A large canvas can easilly cost into the hundreds of pounds and so will the paint to go on it.
To create works at this expence you must really want to do it, particually if you arejust begining or are unknown, you have no gaurente of selling your work.
It would be better to say just that you dont like something , that to talk of the level of "skill" involved. -

What is the best way to choose our leaders?
by sleepy inwhat is the best way to choose our leaders?
being as there so much disagrement about the suitability of our various presidents and prime ministers of our countries and the policies they pursue i was wondering are there better systems we could use in selecting our leaders than the systems we currently use?
i often wonder if in fact those people who actually want to become a prime minister or president are in fact worst people to do so.

Do the very personality traits that make someone want to be in charge, so much that they spend there lives trying to get into these postions, no matter what it take or who they hurt, actually disqualify a person from being a good leader.
We've probably all met the type of person who works his way to the top ,stepping on whoever he can to get there.
Maybe instead of a system where someone has to work there way to the top, there could be a system where people nominated by merit and can qualify only if they have spent a large part of there lives doing say charitable work , or have some similar kind of work.
A system where to be prime minister or president that you have to take a vov of poverty and are not allowed to make money from your postion even AFTER you have left office.
This would put off a lot of people with dodgy motivantions.
Maybe I'm looking at it the wrong way, and you need more arrogant, self confident people to lead (say Winston Churchil) as they will take strain and and the stresses of the job more easilly. -

End Times Prophets are BOGUS! - Matt.24, Mark 13, Luke.21
by LittleToe ini've had a thing against hearing about "end times prophecies" for some time now, no doubt as a reaction against what i had been raised with by the wts.. recently, however, i had cause to re-read luke 21 in "the message".. it suddenly struck me how we would always use matthew 24 to support 1914, but only dipped into mark 13 and luke 21 occasionally.
you may remember the "tote" watchtower in 1995 (?
) which was used to dismantle the "generation" teaching we'd all previously believed, but there was no parallel study from luke.

Doesn't one of the "end time"scriptures say something like "if anyone tells you the end is now , don't listen to him"?

Do born-agains dominate EX-JW's?
by sleepy indo a quick look on the web and you will find most ex-jw or anti-jw sites are made by so called born again christians.
i remember from being a witness that the general view of apostaes was that they had become born again christians.this was probably because so many actually do.
is this having a negative effect or reducing the chances of witness reading information that may help them?

"Now I have to ask YOU a question, given that I'm a "born-again Christian" (not pentecostal, but having a wide range of experience with "charismata") - would you say that I'm in the majority, or dominant???"
Neither.(but I don't know what you get up to at home).
The dominance refers to Born-agains as a group.
It may be that many of the Born -again type thingy christians have never been JW's themselves but have used the testomony of them on their sites or in their literature. They certainly seem to been the main force in trying to convince Jehovahs witnesses they are wrong.
