That whole paradise bit is such a sham. I remember the day I was riding the bus to school, and up til then I'd been very opportunistic, just siding with whichever parent I happened to be with at the time... Well, my father had just converted, joining the dark side w/ my mom, and suddenly I found myself thinking about the paradise, thinking, "Wow, if that's true, then I've got to get my act together! I HAVE to do whatever I have to to live in paradise, forever!" All the nature scenes in the books, the peace and love, yeah, it all appealed to me. Suddenly, conveniently, since I had the opp to please *both* my parents all of a sudden. Not to mention the prospect of having pet monkeys or whatever. I swear that that whole load of crap is designed to trick *kids* into "believing."

Prayer does it work for you?
by haujobbz inhello everyone more questions as usual, do you think praying ever helped you or was it just like talking to the air, its funny because when i was i jw i did pray a lot and convinced myself it worked, but now i think about it, did it help me or was it what i wanted to believe.i mean i always seemed to say to myself b4 yeh praying really helps me in my life and when things went right 4 me like maybe being regular as a preacher,at meetings, and doing whats was right, i felt my prayers were answered but i think these things happened because i wanted them to be that way not because of praying you know like the placebo effect.you see just because you pray 4 something and coincidently it happens does it mean your prayers worked.

Dave L, I really enjoyed your post. Particularly along the lines of not putting limits on the actions of spirit.
My prayers tend to be very simple & straightforward; I rarely pray "for" anything... I think the greatest benefit comes from attention to those things I feel thankful for; I think the energy of my attention strengthens those "good things" and keeps me from strengthening a condition of "lack" of those things I don't have. Basically, I close my eyes and mentally say "thank you," and visualize specific things or areas of my life that I am truly grateful for... This "works" for me, even if only by giving me greater peace of mind. I'm not saying it's wrong or ineffective to ask for help; I just find that the benefit to my mind & spirit is greatest when I focus on what I do have, rather than what I don't.

'Nice' news article from Fl
by Max Divergent in.
here's a nice sickly sweet article from fl about the tireless efforts of the local neighbourhood witnessess working for your salvation despite terrible persecution... i really liked the bit where a lady who takes in stray cats and dogs also invited the jw's in!.

Right on the money, Matty & Scootergirl...
Um, HELLO?!? Not a rejection? At least I never *tried* to be that annoying when I "preached"... Yeah, sounds like a great place to call again"Good morning, how are you?" Mrs. Casper starts in, her face a happy smile. "I know you weren't expecting anyone. We just thought we'd brighten your day a little bit. . . ."
"Ma'am I just got home from work. I'm busy," says the woman's dry voice from the other side of the screen.
"Okay, can I just leave you a tra. . . ."
The door shuts soundly.
"I don't view that as rejection," Mrs. Casper says, her brown pumps clicking against the asphalt as she walks away. "We're calling unexpectedly." The woman probably was very tired, she figures.

hmmmmmm... I also got "all" but the green house question... but isn't "greenhouse" one word? Kind of misleading, methinks
Moe, the first line of #6 says "you are driving a bus"... therefore the name of the bus driver is your own...
LOL, probly the reason I "got" 5 of them right is that I've heard some of them b4... Got most of them wrong the first time around [:|]

Email from a Witness about the site
by Simon inwould just like to say that i have spent hours reading material on this web site.
just would like to also say that i am still one of jehovah's witnesses.
if jehovah's witnesses are truly distructive and to familys as well then i would like to know please, how on earth is the association of brothers going to stay together, if it is really destructive?

One chap i know who knows me from being a child sais that the one thing he liked about me, is that i dont have a holier that thou attitude, and altough i have a religious belief system, that i have retained my own personality, as before. I have not been transformed into some shady grinning self righteous sneak.
I myself work with a JW who is a lot like this... He doesn't know I am XJW, and I'm trying to keep it that way (actually, the number of people at work that I tell about my past is very limited, as I've had many very annoying experiences w/ Christian co-workers telling me "you've never been a Christian then! you need to open your heart to Jesus!" ...I just don't see it this way. I don't go out of my way to slam Christianity, even though I have some huge problems with it; I've always just wanted to be shown the same respect)... Anyway, my point is this: This JW at work retains a friendly personality, doesn't (to my knowledge) try to convert anyone in the workplace, and is seen by everyone as a hard worker, a team player, a comrade. I have nothing but respect for him, but I will say this: I have heard him loudly laughing at another Christian (non-JW), saying "I've never read THAT in the Bible!!! HAHAHA!!! Josh, If you can show me that in the Bible, I'll believe it!!! HAHAHAHAHA!!!" And this to another VERY hard-working person, a sincere, dedicated Christian, a young man who is very conscientious and loved by all. I later overheard Josh talking to another hardcore Christian about it; it seemed like he was heartbroken. Not exactly "good fruit" in my opinion. Also, I hear this JW bringing up current news events & commenting on how horrible they are, making comments like "Noone seems to value life anymore," seeming to be trying to plant his dirty little "seeds." You can retain your own peronality in the JW belief system, but you're STILL expected to internalize the whole creepy belief system.

hey; I've been mostly out for a few days getting my head straight. Jeff Schwehm! I tried writing you awhile back; don't know if you saw my post back then... I was in the E. Metairie congregation, too, and I was ALSO at the DeKalb congregation in NYC (around late 89 - early 93)... If I remember right, you said that you were at DeKalb for awhile. I was wondering if we might know each other, though I can't place your name.
Dede & Denny: It is a tossup right now whether I can make the Dallas apostofest. I can't go wednesday b/c of work, and now the weekend is looking bad; the day after my dog died, I found out my van has a radiator leak. I can drive it to & from work & such, but a long drive seems too risky... Can't really afford to get it fixed right now, or get a rental car But we'll see... If I can get there, I will.
love, Mike
