Most people in my sch cong. (where I was DFed) follow the law to the letter*at least most do, the others look left and right and then say a quick hi*, but in my home congo which is almost family-like, hardly does anyone shun me. Yes, contact and communication is reduced, but they still all greet me! And across the family it even differs, maternal side almost all my cousins have cut me off, and even my grandma refuses to assist in loaning her favourite G-son his school fees, but paternal side it's been all love-bombing. Home front same, dad cold mom warm, sister enstrangled brother indifferent. So I think it's not culture, it's perspertive and how much of the Kool-Aid they drinking!

Disfellowshipping and different cultures
by man in black in.
my wife and i walked away from the jw religion 6 years ago.. she works at a school part-time, and several of the maintenance people are hispanic and active jw's from our area.. they go out of their way to be friendly, but always in a somewhat guarded way.. we were talking about this last night, and she thinks that different cultures do not respect or honor the df / da requirements of the jw religion the same across the board.. i don't believe that,,,, from what i've seen over the years shunning a non believer who leaves or is df'ed is a pretty standard thing.
or is it true that different areas, or cultures adapt their own way of handling this belief?.

Is that discrimination for not hiring straight people?
by Iamallcool ini do know one agency (i will not give a clue what kind of agency is it, etc...) that was run by a straight married female and her staff did not have any gay people in it and she quit to move to another state with her husband.
the board of directors hired a gay male to head the staff, the staff slowly quit by one by one for some unknown reasons and he begin to hire gay people to work for him, i now do not see any single straight worker working for him, is that discrimination for not hiring straight people?.

If straight people refused to work there as you said and quit, simple question is, who would be left?! I think the discrimination actually happen when all the other staff started leaving because the administrator is gay! My orientation is heterosexual and homosexuality is somewhat strange in my country here, but I can't help but feel annoyance over people who wouldn't let people be people whether "straight" or gay. And is the agency delivering? If it's not then you have a 'moral' cause for complaint.

Sense of reality
by d insince leaving the jw's in 2008 i still struggle with a crisis of meaning at times.
i feel like at times life has no set purpose and we are just empty humans floating in space.i struggled a lot with this when i left in 2008 but so no much any more.. i feel like my set version of reality was falling apart and i felt at times i was falling into a deep abyss.. .
did any of you feel like that when you left the jw's?.

Sometimes I do too, especially when one has no one to turn to except one's JW family. But remembering that their own reality is a mirage, a cacophony of deceits, illusions and half-truth just makes my reality seem more tangible. And having set new dreams for myself, now I often go about with more purpose, altho' at times I just crumble like an half-baked pie. But pls just get back on track anytime it happens, its our withdrawal symptoms of leaving the conc. opium of JW teachings!

Un-friending JW Facebook Friends-Therapy
by nicsfreedom init may sound harsh but i am finding it therapeutic to unfriend my jw friends today on facebook.
i just can't live in the past anymore.
so sick of the drama, spying and having to pretend to be something i am not.

Unfriended most of my friends too when they kept barraging my parents with calls about my posts and were always getting my mother all upset. Now, I think I also have to unfriend some family members too (unfriend most of them already but kept some to avoid an info blackout) as they too keep telling my parents and all other family members about my posts, and I think I might have to ease them out too. But, my that is the most bitter pill to swallow!

25 YEARS of compiled yearbook statistics
by 88JM inhello again folks - as promised in my last thread here, i've been working on turning yearbook statistics into excel spreadsheets.. coincidentally, today is my 25th birthday (spare a thought for a fader).. i've now updated the spreadsheet with yearbook data all the way back to 1988 (the year i was born), therefore it now contains 25 years of statistics.. there were a lot of countries changing around and for some it was possible to create a continuation of data.
some are a simple change of name like south-west africa to namibia.
others, for example - in 1993 with czechoslovakia splitting into two countries (czech republic and slovakia) i have added an extra row that provides a continuation of the data, combining czech republic and slovakia back together as if they were still one country.

The Only True Doctor A Parable
by goatshapeddemon ina friend of mine recently found out a few years back that she had an aggressive form of breast cancer.
she went to many doctors, but all of them told her she had to have a mastectomy and undergo radiation therapy.
that seemed really unappealing to her.

Great arguments, play devils advocate for me
by logical1 inpretend you're a faithful witness and devils advocate these arguments for me to help fine tune them:.
fallacy of perfection:.
"there will be no more sickness and death in the new earth...".

@logical1, very great logic, indeed! I commend your rational thinking. But, I can assure you, from bitter personal experience, your sharpest sword wouldn't even cut butter with most of the JWs. I can be a very cunning debater, and people say I give the best saleman pitch anytime I wish to pass a message (at least, my university professors tell me so), yet I have tried most of these arguments with JWs all around me, save the infinite argument, but I doubt even that would work, you know why? Because the cognitive dissonance of an average JW is raised to the power of exponential infinite!
But yes, maybe, it could strike a cord somewhere down down their minds, so I commend you once again- powerful arguments you've got!

Are you prepared to apologise even when it is not you fault?
by usualusername inare you prepared to apologise even when it is not you fault?.

Nope, that would be stupid and hypocritical to me. Sounds like something Watchtower would have one do. But, yes, I could make compromises if it would allow enough peace to let the wrong party realise her/his mistake and then do the apologizing. I wouldn't pay for someone's else mistakes 'cause no one gonna pay for mine!

Judicial committee questions
by slimboyfat inwhen the elders invite someone to a judicial committee does the person under scrutiny have the right to ask beforehand what evidence will be adduced against him and what witnesses will be called?
in other words is there pre-trial disclosure within the watchtower's quasi legal process?

Never got to know my accuser(s) officially till date! I personally approached someone I thought was my principal antagonist to avoid animiosity that could result from feeling betrayed, but she denied and gave a list of persons she felt were potential accusers, bottomline, she listed a good number of persons I or my girlfriend thought were our friends. Also, the elders did do a good deal of lying, and they insisted on my not keeping notes when they could. Also, when I appealled, they asked if I kept copies of the appeal leter! Had to get thru a humilating process of SSS-type, Gestapo-styled interrogation just because of family and love, and still I got the boot! Wished I just simply didn't go, wished I never gave them those powers over me!
Anyway, rant over. I'd suggest, if you don't have paddies on the JC, or your chances are slim, just don't go!
