  Jehovah's Witnesses and beards

  when i was a jw, i don't remember having read in the watchtower literature a rule explicitely forbidding to be bearded.

  the pictures depicting "faithful witnesses" of the past (abraham, job,, moses, the apostles, etc.

  ) always show bearded men.

  Sporting a well trimed beard was one of my first acts of rebellion while still in. It really makes the elders uncomfortable because they know there is no basis for such a ban in the bible. However they will try to guilt you into shaving if they can.

  I continued to go out in field service and give talks in the public school with the beard.

  Many publishers told me how good it looked on me and they could not understand why the WT did not like it.

  If they tried to use the rebel argument with me, I threw it back at them that now it does not indicate such as in the 60s. Now doctors, lawyers, Judges all wear beards with no negative connotation, and I continued on with all of my JW activities like there was nothing wrong.

  When I finally walked out and never showed back up, they were glad to see me go.

  The beard caused to many people to as questions and start to think for themselves.

  I dont want to face death

  i just heard that two of the fathers of childhood friends of mine, one of them the first boy i ever loved, and the other the head of a good catholic family with eight kids who lived across the street from us, died within days of each other.

  im my mind, those families are frozen in time about 35 years ago when i last saw any of them, and i couldnt conceive of them being gone.. i dont know why but those two men being gone really got to me.

  i wasnt close to them or anything but it brought home the very real thought that my own parents are going to go soon...and leave me and my two sibs on the planet to carry on.

  It was after the passing of my mother & 36 y/o sister that I really woke up to my own mortality. It was at that point in my life that i wanted to live it to the fullest, that is when I started researching the WT and got out of a bad marriage.

  Today I have never been happier, life is too short to waist it on being miserable or living in fear.

  I am no longer worried about facing death. I should have been dead at age 9, but modern medical science saved my life. I got a second chance. Knowing that one fact that had I lived at any other time in history my life would have been cut short as a young boy. Hurray for living in the last days, I say, it saved my life.

  The bottom line is, in 200 or 300 years no one on earth then will even know who we were, not even our own family members, well unless you try to assasinate a world leader or something.

  Life is to short to live in fear, live for today and make each day worth living for.

  Scuba Diving - advice please.

  i have my final dives this weekend to qualify as an open water scuba diver.

  i have to admit i'm nervous so if anyone here has passed can you let me know what to expect?.

  all tips would be appreciated.. nic'

  Having some stress on your first dive is normal. Do all of your safety checks and just try and relax and you will do fine.

  Make sure you are properly weighted.

  Trying to use your arms to swim once down is a common mistake and will use up more air. Keep your arms to your side and use your legs to move.

  When I got certified for open water last year, we had to dive in a lake with water temp 52 degrees F. Dealing with the cold water temp was the hardest part of the test.

  Always dive with a buddy, is the best tip I can offer.

  I got certified for Nitrox air two months ago, only one local dive so far using it, and scheduled for the advanced dive class the end of this month. After my first few dives in the ocean I realized that is is very beneficial to know compass navigation.

  some of you might remember my situation....i have daed myself a while ago, and my father is the only jw in the family.

  since i am very close to him and the family, he has read everything related to shunning, he even asked elders and even them are not sure.

  so he wrote a big long letter to bethel to have an answer.

  The "flock" elders manual states that they should keep away from messing with anyone who associates with a DF or DA family member.

  I would show that to your father and then he can just keep it on the D/L.

  I know of one elder who was messing with a publisher who was going away to visit his DF (for many years) daughter and grandchildren on vacation, once he showed the elder the info in the flock book he backed his ass up and never messed with him again.

  The last thing that I saw in print was from a 2002 "examine the scriptures daily" It talks about oral sex then makes the following statment....

  While sexuality is a gift from God, it is not to be expressed without restrain, even within the marriage arrangement......

  The title of this bit was "Flee from fornication" so they are implying that oral sex with your married mate is indeed fornication. As long as you don't advocate it among the brothers and sisters they will leave you alone, however should you go around telling others that you engage in this and advocate it they will in fact bring you up on charges of fornication... yes you can fornicate with your own spouse is the message.

  Does the Watchtower Society Monitor this Board???

  maybe this has been addressed before, but after reading certain comments about people being "outed", i wonder if the wts really monitors this site?

  if so, to what extent?

  or is it just individual elders etc.?.

  On one hand I could see the WT legal dept keeping tabs on the board to stay ahead of the curve on the war on theocrocy. However one can't help notice the in your face antics of Richie R with no outing of any kind.

  So if the board is monitored by the WT, what is their purpose for doing so?
