But seriously, a good book on the subject is Exegetical Fallacies by D.A. Carson. There is a large chapter on abuse of original languages. Might dig it up to see if he specifically deals with JW interpretations - I heard a few of the interpretative fallacies used in my old pentecostal church.

i don't know how the weather is everywhere else, but here in dixie, it's been the first bearable summer in as long as i can remember.. it seems as though mother nature took a rest this year, worn out from her years of relentlessly bombarding us with intense heat.
for so long, it seemed as though the spring and summer months, even october, would bring an onslaught of 100+ degree temperatures with record high humidity and only enough rain to turn our evenings into saunas.. then this year came.
so far, the temperature has topped out in the very low 90's and the humidity just hasn't had the enthusiasm of years past.
Winters always hit us hard, Ozzie. We live in a Housing Department house, which for some reason was built to be porous! At least we've got a couple of extra heaters this year, but it's still a pain in the kidneys!

He could have passed on by now - I haven't seen him for a while, some younger person or other old bloke is usually manning the stall now). I ordered the Kingdom Interlinear through him. When I went into town to get it he went out of his way to show me the great truths one could find by original language study. He showed me John 1:1 and proceeded to show me the difference between "ton theon" and "theos" - according to him, "ton theon" was Jehovah God and "theos" was the Lord Jesus Christ. The fact of the matter is that that particular argument was officially dropped by the Society around 30 years ago, IIRC (there was an article about it). The endings are simply case endings and have no material bearing on meanings - that argument would be like saying that "he" always refers to Jehovah God, while "him" always refers to the Lord Jesus Christ. (This isn't about the meaning of John 1:1, BTW, but how someone unfamiliar with Greek and its rules can find significance where there is none - the other thread on Koine was about the differences between "oikia" and "oikos" and the different inflections thereof)
Anyway, this guy was pointing to the verses and passages he wanted me to take special note of. When I got on the train home and had a look at the book, I noticed some brown, oily stains where he'd pointed to parts of the book. I can only assume they must be ear wax; he must have given his ears a good old clean before I turned up! I was rather disconcerted, to say the least...

TattooGrll, look around at the people in your KH. They may seem like a friendly bunch of eccentrics, but what is the message they're conveying to you? Is it likely that the more time you spend with them, the more subtle pressures will be brought to bear for you to be like them? After all, THEY are all like them! If you continue to do what they want in order for them to accept you, what do you think you will be wearing in, say, three years time? Long dark skirts, long-sleeved, high-necked tops and sensible shoes? As Tergiversator says, will your colourful, cheery tattoos which give you such joy now be a source of shame and regret?
I know I look like I'm just trying to bag the JWs and dig up any negative I can find. I suppose you've been warned that Satan's minions will do whatever they can to prevent you from joining "the Truth". What I'm doing is asking you to wonder if these "free" Bible studies you're doing with the Witnesses come with a hidden price tag, and if, at the end of the day you're willing to pay that price. If, after careful thought and consideration, with your eyes open and fully aware of what's being asked of you, you decide to continue with them, then so be it, and more power to you!
