There are two methods of Bible translation, literal and dynamic equivalalence. Literal translations attempt to capture the meaning of scripture word by word whereas dynamically equivalent try to capture the sense of what is being said in the passage. For example, a literal translation will translate the "It came to pass" bits because it's in the Greek, while a dynamically equivalent version will not bother because it doesn't change the English sense and just adds verbosity. NWT is a more literal translation (although not necessarily a good one!).
New International Version is dynamically equivalent whereas The New King James Version leans in the direction of literal translation.
I mention this because it may influence your decision on the basis of translation style, if such matters to you. There are a whole plethora of versions out there for each and every taste. I personally recommend getting hold of a cheap paperback copy of several versions and try reading the different ones until you get it right.
If you prefer less "meaty" but more readable versions, then the Contemporary English Version, New Century Version or New Living Bible could appeal to you. They tend to be dynamically equivalent, IIRC.

The CO is giving a talk that in summary says that the allegory of so many years is now GONE. He is teaching that there is no "second" and "greater" fulfillment of Matthew 24:15-16 but that it was fulfilled in complete in the first century, and only upon Jewry.
Halelujah! After all these years of Russell fleeing his Presbyterian roots, the Watchtower now agrees with the traditional Presbyterian interpretation of that passage. The assertion that they're going mainstream is obviously on track, but it's so painfully slow!
A pity they're not going mainstream on the more important and dangerous issues, though.

As for the whole witnessing online thread, I really pity the woman who lost her mother and the person who got the receiving end of the "Why I don't celebrate birthdays" post. i've been studying the bible with a jehovah's witness in my town, and i'm rather enjoying it.. but why do so many people hate the jw's.. i've researched on my own and have come to the conclusion that they are right on most accounts including the trinity, blood, nationalism... etc.... and the more arguments i hear against the more i'm drawn into believing what they stand for.. and every argument i've seen in support of the things jw's are against the more i think the jw's are right.. so why are they so bad?
I've always had a desire to join the military, but according to my research, not what the JW's teach me, the military is not acceptable to god.

I agree with their views of the Trinity, the scriptures, in my view, never say that God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit/Ghost whatever you wanna call it are one.
And you'll find the Christadelphians and the Unitarians will agree with you there.
I agree with their views on Blood because I know from my grandpa's experiences how dangerous a transfusion can be.
Then you'll find that the Christian Scientists agree with you there. The JWs only changed to that idea in 1942, AFTER Jehovah had supposedly approved them as his org.
I agree witht their views on employment because there are some jobs that would definately not be appropriate in the eyes of god.
The Christadelphians agree with you there, as do the Mennonites, who were around long before the Watchtower decided in 1940 not to allow military service.

If that's so, then why did Jehovah approve the Bible Students, as they then were, as his organisation in 1919, since they were still using the cross as a symbol then?
Jehovah really wouldn't recognise the organisation he supposedly approved in 1919 if he were to do a similar evaluation today. In 1919, the Bible students didn't use the name "Jehovah", they could smoke, have blood transfusions, celebrate birthdays and Christmas and serve in the military. They also used the cross symbol.
