  Kind of Depressed, Looking for Someone to Talk to

  some of you on this board know me, or at least part of my story, very likely most of you do not.. i am a 21 yr old male from chicago who finally mustered the courage to da myself roughly 6 months ago.

  being a 3rd-generation jw, my grandfather was an elder 45 years, so this developed a reputation and precedence for me that i would one day be a co.. or go to bethel.

  such high expectations, which i am happy i never fulfilled.

  Hello Reborn, I'm a 32yr old male from the UK and I was 21 when I first questioned the WT. At that time I didn't come out because I thought that my so-called friends were more important than truth (my fleshly family are not JW's)and so I stayed. I wish now that I showed the same courage as you have just shown. Well done!!

  I know you must be suffering internally, but please know this - trust in God and pray to him as much as you can and he will see you right through these trials. Pray for your family too.

  I look forward to your posts in the future and please keep us updated with your progress.

  The Watchtower's Bible Scholars?

  witnesses are often told that is is not necessary to look to outside sources such as bible encyclopedias and commentaries because the society's writing department already has these and presents us with the best comments from them for us anyway.

  what i have noticed though, is that there are many comments from 19th century commentators and not much in the way of quotes from modern-day bible scholars and their works.. i understand that at the recent kingdom ministry school it was said that the society has the best bible scholars available for our instuction.

  if that was said (can anyone confirm?

  Witnesses are often told that is is not necessary to look to outside sources such as Bible encyclopedias and commentaries because the Society's Writing Department already has these and presents us with the best comments from them for us anyway.   I understand that at the recent Kingdom Ministry School it was said that the Society has the best Bible scholars available for our instuction. If that was said (can anyone confirm?) it was the height of arrogance to say it! What they really mean by Bible scholar is a brother who knows the Society's own teachings inside out and not necessarily the Bible itself. I understand too that if the Society has hundreds of Bible commentaries available I reckon that they are not open to scrutiny by the majority of the Bethel family and largely ignored even by those who have access to them.

  i would appreciate your take on the following reasoning.. a witness when presented with some errors of wt doctrine such as 607bce for example could turn round and say, "well we might be wrong on this but this matter is not as bad as teaching that god burns sinners in a fiery hell forever like some religion of christendom do.

  i do not feel that chronology (or some other matter) affects my relationship with jehovah and his organization.

Or I have heard some say, "Jesus said that those who show love to another are his true disciples. Jehovah's Witnesses are showing outstanding love in this world so it does not matter about these other matters whether they be right or wrong."

  I have had these things said to me and at this stage I find it hard to deal with this reasoning as they put it so logically sometimes. I feel that many hearing this reasoning as soon as they start to question WT doctrine still decide to stay in the organizaton because of it.

  One of the ways the WT tries to get you into believing you are not going to heaven even if you d not have faith in Christ is by saying that if Adam had not sinned we would all be living in a paradise earth. The publication "Reasoning from the Scriptures" states on page 162: "It wa not Jehovah's original purpose for man someday to die.......Death was to be punishment for disobedience, not the doorway to a better life in heaven. Obedience would have been rewarded by continued life, eternal life, in the Paradise that God had given to man. See also Isaiah 45:18"

  Does anyone have any comment on this matter?

  every one of his talks (they last 30mins approx mon-fri) has been an eye-opener for me.

I particularly enjoy the program "Insight for Living" (see alphabetical list from above link) by Chuck Swindoll (Dallas Theological Seminary. Every one of his talks (they last 30mins approx Mon-Fri) has been an eye-opener for me. His exegesis of Scripture is sound and his application of Scripture to modern-day living is spot on. I must say it is far better than the spiritual browbeating one receives from the Watchtower. I've just attended a Circuit Assembly and all I heard was the same old organization nonsense with only the odd bit of good Scripture exposition. Anyway check out the above link, or if anyone already has please tell me which sermons/speakers you've enjoyed.

  "if jehovah's organization knowingly endorsed false teachings, advice to read the bible would never be given to jehovah's witnesses and those to whom they preach.".
