Why don't parents of an abused child go straight to police, why go to an elder first??

i hope i don't come across as judgemental but having read a lot on the current child abuse cases and the different threads on here, i am left wondering why on earth a parent of an abuse victim would go to an elder with the problem first and not straight to police?.

as a parent myself i know that if anything like that happend to my child (this applies to when i was still an active jw as well as now) i would not hesitate in going to the authorities as soon as i found out, it wouldn't of crossed mine or my husbands mind to go to an elder.

maybe after we had reported it but definitely never as the first port of call.

You are correct, the natural instinct is to protect your child and go straight to the authorities. The sad thing is that JWs are not told to think for themselves and everything has to be done via thier rules, which they are told are for their protection!

Before I left I had numerous discussions with felllow elders about this, who all said to me that they would go to the police without hesitation, I pointed out they would be doing so contrary to WT instructions and all they could say was 'so be it'.

i listened to the last recording of jim jones and it was chilling.

people cheered and clapped when he told them it was the end...one older black woman protests saying "the children have a right to live" but she is shouted down by the other members saying "if they take our kids they will grow up to be dummies.

It was shocking and my heart goes out to all the families that lost loved ones in these places. What is also shocking is that people in cults will see these reports, comment on how disturbing it is, but not see they are in the same position themselves.

If the WTS lost its tax exempt status and certain ones put into prison, the R&F would accept this as persecution. As to suicide, I cannot think how any scripture can be twisted to explain that it is the right thing to do in line with JWs teachings.

i used to be an elder for more than 20 years .

i have successfully faded with my wife and children.

Welcome here, and congratulations on a successful fade. All the best to you and yours. At the wedding you will most likely find some will love bomb you while others will avoid eye contact. It's actually quite surreal, keep your sense of humour about it.

The Elders help

a young jw i used to know (nice person), said within earshot to a non df'd ex jw he knew that his "..parents are up and down in the relationship and the elders(tm) are going to help.".

the non df'd ex jw said to me that he considered that after the elders(tm) get involved his parents were bound to split up.

the non df'd ex jw also commented: "what do elders know?

So. I wonder exactly how the elders(TM) will help.....ask about sexual positions? Read from their silly books?

They will tell them to read the bible watchtower together and say that if they are spiritually strong what problems could they possibly have?!

It makes you wonder how strong the marriage bonds of elders are that they can give such good counsel.....

Moving out after the borg

i was delighted to hear of adjustments news, but it did remind me of what i'm sure a lot go through when they leave, here's a little of my story:.

when i married as a jw, and when we moved there was always a team of willing volunteers happy to drive the van or move the furniture or decorate.

additonally when you get married you have a list of items people want to buy for you, even if some had odd taste we received lots of needed and wanted items, sometimes 2 or 3 of the same type.. as a da'd person, also seperated from my spouse i needed to move home.

Hey happy: did you end up making new friends? It must have been scary starting from scratch. Do you have any tips?

I have made some good friends, through work and also exJWs. I also have my kids so have plenty to keep me occupied. I did initially subscribe to meetup and still get the Monday morning email, but never had time to go to any of the events. I lead a fairly active life anyhow.

I'm pleased for Mr O'Hare, he is free from a cult and he obviously needed to do something to announce his joy

As a DA'd person, also seperated from my spouse I needed to move home. With no 'friends' or family who talk to you, you are on your own. I was starting over so had to get everything, even down to linen, cutlery and pictures! I had nobody to call on for help, nobody sent me a 'New Home' card. And yet despite that, the sense of achievement and happiness far outweighs any hardship.

I am happy in my home, it is a place of peace and tranquility for me, and I wish every happiness for all who are moving on to pastures new.
