EP's approach to debating is similar to a drive-by shooting where he misses all his targets but speeds away with satisfaction thinking he's a bad-ass gangster.
Anyway, no. I have not seen the program.
i must admit, i am a sucker for bible movies.
i do not get the history channel on my cable service but i've heard good things about the series.. have you seen it?.
are you interested in these types of programs..

zoiks inspired this thread when he mentioned this book elsewhere.. i have read other threads on this forum about it, but i always enjoy the fresh insight on here.. commentary on the letter of james was always my favorite book from wtbs, partly because i love the book of james, but also because it was one of the books that dealt with more practical christian living than constant wt doctrine.. i mentioned to a number of people that i loved that book, and got a few comments of "well, you know that book was written by an apostate.".
it didnt take me long to do a little math - that book came out i believe in 1979/1980, right around the time of the great purge.
how could someone write such an excellent book and then be branded an apostate just a few months later???.
Yes, I've started reading this from my Library CD recently.
was pondering today on the jws stance on the existance of the dinosaurs.
would be interested to know any belieavers stance on this eg.
your own belief and that of the wts current understanding.. insidentally i tried to search this on jw.org and no search bar, or at least i didn't find one ????.
Tch tch, you guys The Society doesn't teach that dinos died in the Flood. Perhaps some Witnesses assume that, though, because they are lacking in scientific curiosity and the Society has been fairly mum on the subject (no sense taking a stance on something tangential that most people don't think about). LouBelle and newdawnfades (welcome, btw) were right on the ball when it comes to the common JW explanations for dinosaurs.
today is the anniversary of the death of douglas adams.. adams was one of the most insightful skeptical thinkers and the author of the fantastic series, "the hitchhiker's guide the galaxy - a trilogy in four parts".. professor dawkins said on his death "science has lost a friend, literature has lost a luminary, the mountain gorilla and the black rhino have lost a gallant defender.".
.
.
Shortly before he died he wrote that he had been fairly down in the dumps while writing the last two books in the "trilogy" of five, and acknowledged that they weren't very upbeat as a result. He was hoping to get back to writing in his more carefree style.
jehovah's witnesses don't have a message.
they have an alternate lifestyle.. for persons put off by teachings of eternal torment they offer eternal sleep or a paradise earth.. for christians disaffected by tepid sermons and rituals they offer a vital lifesaving field service ministry.. in a world saturated in sex and exhibitionism, loud rude music and apathy they offer modesty of dress, cleanliness and worldwide family.. they are seen by the world much the same way as the amish only more modern.. people find their teaching quaint or laughable but think they are sincere and eager for postive change.. .
this is a brand more than a religion.. when the average person looks at jw's they see loyalty.
I'm definitely one who, although a born-in, was attracted to the lifestyle more than anything. I liked being holier-than-thou and feeling different. It was also a good mask for my inherent social ineptitude -- I didn't have to make friends with worldlies and had built-in "friends" in the congregation!
i've read a few people mention making up the figures for the field service reports, and i want to find out how common it is.
i never lied on my report.
sometimes i'd round up 15 minutes if i'd mentioned jw stuff to my brother that month, but that wasn't falsifying.
I think so far I've lied once to avoid having a month with no hours, can't remember if I adjusted for it the next month. But I am still only reporting what I'm doing, even it's a single hour. Needless to say I am not getting offered any privileges. If I'm out on a long break in field service (general rule of thumb for "long" is around 30 minutes), I do deduct that.
i am well aware that this thread could diverge into a discussion of the legitimacy of the watchtowers view of heavenly class and earthly class and what not.
... but that's not the thrust of my question.
i just replied to a thread about going to memorial and started thinking how after jesus started out no one talked about actually doing it after the initial time.
The WT answer to that, Bob_NC, is that most of those early Christians weren't real Christians. Christianity was "corrupted" really early on, remember? They've specifically said in the literature that just because some died a martyr's death, they weren't automatically good Christians. Now, Rutherford, there was a real Christian (wait, did he claim to be of the anointed? I can't recall ever seeing that stated anywhere).
so my husband (who was never a jw) saw a christian bumper sticker today and asked me if the witnesses have any.
i said no (not that i know of anyway) so here are a few he came up with.. 'honk if you're a zombie'.
'my other car is noah's ark'.
This reminded me that I saw the following vanity license plate in the parking lot of the last assembly: JWORG
Does that mean they can count all their driving time as service time? Ingenious bastards!
hi all - sure sure, you can call me a troll or brainwashed cult member.
i am totally interested in how your answers to these questions.. .
do you find yourself ignoring anything that jehovah's witnesses bring out in regards to their former status as an ngo?.
Thank you Wholly.

There's a good treatment of the positive UN articles on this JWfacts page under the subheading "Changing Tunes". I'm sure I saw a list somewhere, though....
