Aren't you thinking of when they said Jesus' reign started? I thought they did expect 1914 to be the end of the Gentile Times, that is, the end of the system of things, like he said.

Are the Witnesses Really Losing Their Young People?
by What Now? inthat article about jehovah's witnesses having the lowest retention rate for born ins keeps popping up every now again ... i'm just curious if any of you have noticed that this is actually the case.
in the congregation that i grew up in, i'm going to say that 95% of the young people in their teens to mid twenties are either regular pioneering, regular auxiliary pioneering, serving in foreign language congregations or where the need is greater.
both of my younger sisters are regular pioneers - and the young people in their hall even organize 8 pm to midnight service on friday nights of their own accord.

NLP, Subliminal Messages and the WT Writing Department
by 00DAD ina few years ago i became interested in the subject of neuro-linguistic programming (nlp).
while the core concepts of nlp have been largely discredited as new-age pseudo-science, there is no doubt that there is at least some validity to the idea.
words and images remain the key way we communicate.

William Shatner was once asked how he knew, back in the '60s while filming a scene in TOS where Kirk had to avoid a hostile encounter, that certain body language was non-confrontational and disarming. It wasn't for many years that a study demonstrated that this body language indeed has this effect. Shatner simply replied that any trained actor would understand this subject intuitively and there was no need to read about it in a scientific journal.

Elders! Elders everywhere!
by Julia Orwell inan elder came around this morning at 9am to ask if my husband wanted to come with him on a bible study.
my husband nipped from the bathroom to the bedroom in his undies to get dressed, while i talked to the elder!
the elder talked about how he just happened to think my husband might be free this morning, and just happened to get a call from someone wanting a bible study, and then he said to me, "why don't you come visit my house some time?

Reading the thread title and OP, I just imagine Julia Orwell getting home and finding an elder washing his car in her driveway -- "Hey, our well ran dry." She goes inside and an elder is sniffing a jar of mayonnaise -- "I don't think this is good anymore, I'll throw it out for you." She opens the shower curtain to step into the tub and there's an elder with a shower cap on holding a loofah. "Do your back for ya?"

Pioneer Takes Baby Out In Zero Wind Chill
by rocketman inthough i haven't been in the mood to discuss jws lately, i had to post this one.
it's a keeper and shows how fanatical they can get:.
on my way to work in our city's downtown area i regularly see a pioneer walking up and down the street, holding up his magazines.

Are we all bitter?
by LouBelle ini posted a link on fb that lead to a topic here.
i then had one of my 'friends' start having a go about how bitter everyone is here....fact he said.
(he used to be a jw elder but left a while back, not sure why he left or if he has even researched the faith since leaving) the more i tried to reason with him that actually it is a support forum, the more he lashed out that everyone here bad mouths the jw's and only attack the jw's.

Isn't the pejorative "bitter" intended to refer to the notion that ex-JWs are angry over being disfellowshipped? That basically they were kicked out of the congregation for wrongdoing, or left because of a personal wrong committed to them that they couldn't forgive? JWs are unable to contemplate the possibility that anyone could be angry over the truth turning out to be a lie after a careful examination of the teachings, because that notion is beyond them as long as they're true believers.
But I don't think it's entirely fair to say that all ex-JWs are bitter for good reason, when they all have different reasons for being out. Some leave because of a personal offense or are DFed against their will, and only years later discover TTATT. Of course the DFing itself might have been totally unloving and unjustified, and the personal offense might be the final evidence that the ex-JW needed that the organization is not more caring and Christian than other religions, but when the predominant tone of the person is anger, it tends to make a JW feel like it's that person who is in the wrong.
I would liken it to a political debate where one of the politicians gets really worked up over a problem he's discussing. It might be a really good thing to get upset over, but if he gets too emotional and words his statements too harshly, people will disregard him as being "unstable" or "loony", so he has to moderate his tone in order to be effective.

NEW BLOOD CARD DIRECTIVE...
by SkyGreen inthe husband just gave me the new march km (im using it folded up as a coaster at the moment) and a new "blood card" to complete, along with a copy of a set of instructions for how to fill it out and a letter from wts to every baptised publisher.
i said to him "i wont be needing that" and gave it back to him, and he just said, well just throw it out then - no overreaction yay :o) without telling him, about a month ago, (i tore up my existing no blood directive.
our kids have never carried around "identity cards" we were never that diligent about it).

This topic's responses are not making sense. [...] The doctors should be the ones to make the call, not not anti-noblood theolgy.
Well that cleared things up.

I thought the analogy " Imagine what a mother bear would do if someone threatened her cubs!" was particularly, exceptionally stupid. I need to start a collection of dumb WT illustrations.

My current congregation has a lot of enthusiastic young people pioneering and stuff too. I think that it's simply a matter of there being a few likeable outgoing youths, who then attract the rest to want to spend time with them (all the more so when they're pretty sisters -- suddenly the brothers are discovering a newfound love for field service). Basically it's more a matter of friendship and popularity than anything. As most of them get older, get married and grow apart, their likelihood of remaining Witnesses will go down if they don't continue having social reasons for wanting to stay in.

Silly things I wondered as a kid
by exwhyzee inif god is like a loving father why did he set up a way for adam and eve to possibly fail by putting the "magic tree" in the garden?
if my dad sabotaged his kids this way or felt the need to test our love him he'd be considered an abusive father.. when god put an angel with a spinning sword in front of the entrance to the garden why didn't a&e walk a few miles down from there and climb over the wall ?
was there a wall ?.
