Survivor was OK, although the ending seemed a bit empty IMHO. It also wasn't as polished as Fight Club. Fight Club is still one of my top ten books of all time, of course. I just loved that grab-you-by-the-short-and-curlies style of writing, but it gets a bit grating and repetitive in his later work.

anyone read SURVIVOR by chuck palahniuk?
by doogie inyeah, i'm not sure how to spell his last name.
he's the guy that wrote fight club.. i read this book a while ago and was amazed at the way he describes cult life and especially post-cult life.
the story is about a guy that left a cult and the premise is he's the only left on a plane that is almost out of gas and he's telling his life story into the plane's black box so that something will be left after he's gone (i thought that was a great idea for a book).. i was sure chuck palah...whatever-his-name-is used to be a jw.

There's nothing more hilarious than seeing people denigrating the very impulse responsible for their existence!
I believe this is a form of unintentional self-referential humour.
Oh, and in other news, I'm going to become a rap star one of these days, yo!

Attn: Formidable Apostates
by Bubbamar ini read the thread yesterday about apostates and started wondering about your families.
i am thinking about writing a letter to my mom and sharing with her some of the things i have learned about the jw's but also realize that this will make me an apostate and will worsen an already distant and painful relationship.
i am hoping that some of you will share your experiences on what impact your outspoken "apostacy" has had on your families - how have they reacted to you.

The anonymous envelopes full of carefully picked Watchtower quotes thing is a great way of going about it.
However, very few head-on confrontations with people in the Truth worked - they're programmed to fight against that sort of stuff.
You've gotta go in under the radar! Rome wasn't built in a day, and neither can the machinations of the Tower be destroyed in one day.

WE JUST SAW "DAY AFTER TOMORROW"

Yes, it had a crappy storyline, but what can you expect from the producers of Independence Day?
"Hey, dude, we killed all the aliens!"
"How'd you do that?"
"We installed Windows 95 on the aliens' computers, and they all started crashing. Now they're dead!"Really!
But, on the other hand, the soundtrack and the special effects were astonishing. Go Day After Tomorrow! I found it to be an extremely sobering, beautiful movie.

Apostates-Scar's and Hyenas in Pride Land
by reason inthe bible clearly defined what an apostate is: loose morals, like dogs returning to their vomit, arrogant and haughty, impatient, cynics, causing divisions, have trouble following authority-all of these qualities, all summed up, i saw here.. if i am simba, i wouldn't want people like you in pride land.
you people will only cause trouble and problems.
you are the scar's and hyenas whose place is in the elephant's graveyard..

The Q'ran (hope I spelled that right) also summed up sinners and evildoers quite succintly:
1. People who eat pork.
2. People who don't worship Allah.
3. People who don't keep their women in submission.
It seems to me that YOU are the evildoer.
Or are you?
Anyway, at the end of the day, my God can kick your God's ass!

Strangers to the Past. Would You Agree.
by Blueblades in.
would you agree that whether in the dark ages, the middle ages, the age of discovery, the industrial age, the atomic age, the space age, the events of the day are essentially repetitions, variations, elaborations or extensions of the past, and life on earth, the overall course of humankind, human nature itself and mankind's relationships with one another continue very much the same as they were in the past.. would you agree that what appears momentous, even stupendous, to one generation is not to the next, and rarely figures in the daily thoughts or concerns of people living in such later times.. would you agree that the past fades from human thoughts that are immersed in the present and grappling with the future.. would you agree that the only genuinely complete change would only take place if, and this is a big "if",some power beyond humankind, "god" if you will, actually someone who is not a stranger to the past and is a competent judge of the present changes the cycle of human history for the betterment of all mankind.. otherwise our children's children will follow in our footsteps as to being strangers to the past.and we will also fade into the past as forgotten by those immersed in the present and grappling with the future.. as many have posted here, we are stuck in the present, discussing recent past events, and trying to make sense out of what the future holds for us.. i don't know why i am posting this except that my mind is restless and spinning going nowhere fast.does this happen to you?has 30 something years in the watchtower brought me to this point in my life?i am in a holding pattern trying so hard to flush 30 years out of my mind.. blueblades.

We humans are notorious for our short memories - but it's a survival tactic.
On a similiar note, my personal "belief" or "feeling", yes, that's a better word, is that humanity is rapidly approaching a technological Singularity event - the point when the current exponential growth of technology becomes so fast that we will reach a place and time where everything changes, all at once. This is all backed up by the numbers, but then, it's just a little theory.
It seems to me that many, many people are picking up the same feeling from recent events, although their personal interpretations differ. JCanon, for example, interprets all this to mean that he's the Second Christ. Different strokes, I guess.
As far as that goes, I'm just an interested observer, and I think there's a good novel or two to be gotten out of the supposed "End Times".
And, last but not least, the attitude of a "Big Brother" figure stepping in to save mankind has been a problem for absolutely ages. If humans stuffed it up, we can certainly fix it, and that goes for anything, except for the fact that very few humans are brave enough to go against the flow in this regard. *sigh*

The posters on this thread are, for the most part, expressing their opinions in a very logical and controlled manner, which, considering what many of them have been through, is an admirable accomplishment. Power to the people!
Nathan, could you provide a little bit more detail about the tax break aspect of your post? I'd love to hear some more "FOLLOW THE MONEY" stuff! Good post, BTW.

Communication from the subconscious
by seattleniceguy init's been a while since i've posted here.
hope you all remember me!
in the final months before i left the organization, in the days before i consciously could accept that it was not the truth - indeed, before i could even entertain such a notion on the conscious level - my subconscious knew the truth, and it took to sending me ever stronger messages.

The whole mind and body are one unit - they're an inseparable linked system. What you're describing is a very common reaction to large-scale emotional change. It wasn't very easy for me either - I quite literally felt sick to my stomach the day I made my decision to DA, so I know what you were going through!
"If the flood is true, how can it be that virtually all marsupials live in Australia?"
Because they're good swimmers and all of them just happened to like the weather Down Under! Doh! Or at least, that's the official position of most Pro-Deluvians!
