  The Watchtower vs The Clock - where are they headed?

  after reading janh's 1914 generation post (under the best of section), i was impressed by the amount of research he had put in.

  one thing that sticks out while reading it, however, is the sneaky way the watchtower kept extending the length of a generation every few years.. all those oldies who've been around for decades, patiently waiting on jehovah and the society for that long promised paradise are already passing away.

  metaphorically speaking, their "spiritual tongue" is longing for that drip of cold crystal clear water from the rivers of paradise.

  One thing about the JW's today that I just can't understand is why they can't see how the "ticking clock" directly affects the doctrine of the "Great Crowd."

  1. The "Great Crowd" are those that actually survive the Tribulation.

  2. The JW's identified this group in 1935.

  3. Those people were adults at the time --every bit as old as the "1914 Generation"

  Most of those about whom J.F. Rutherford said, "Behold, the Great Multitude" have died. The day is not far off when every single one of them will be dead.

  Since you obviously can't survive the Tribulation if you don't even live to see it, these persons could not have been members of the "Great Crowd."

  The doctrine of the "Great Crowd" is therefore slowly getting crushed under the wheels of time with every tick of the clock.

  Wild Animals in Paradise

  i remember when they said that wild animals wouldn't be wild anymore in paradise.

  we could be right next to these wild animals, and no harm would come to us.. i remember seeing magazines with pictures of young children and lions next to each other.

  is it realistic to believe that all animals would be nice to each other and peaceful, like shown in the magazines?

  No it's not realistic at all.

  Animals today eat just exactly what they are adapted (or "designed" for you creationists) to eat.

  Cats for example cannot internally synthesize the essential amino acid, taurine and must therefore obtain it directly through their diet. The problem here is that taurine is not found in plant tissue, it is only found in meat. Ergo, cats are not naturally capable of being vegetarians.

  If you carefully read JW publications, you may get the impression that some writers realize what a load of nonsense the idea of an all vegetarian ecology is. One of my best friends, a JW veternarian, actually wrote them a long letter after a series of particularly inane articles came out in the Awake! in the early 1980's, so this has been explained to them at great length.

  However the JW's have never renounced this idea. It is still "official doctrine" as this picture from a recent Watchtower shows:

  Straw (The biologically inactive, dried out stems of grass) is not a suitable food even for cattle and horses. Yet JW writers seem to feel that the lion is somehow capable of eating it.

  Anyone have a pet iguana?

  it wasn't a pet we actually wanted but now that we have the iguana, we actually like it.. how we came to own zilla (short for godzilla): i was having a yard sale last weekend and my mom brought some stuff over to sell.

  well she and my sister worked the yard sale while i went for my dentist appointment saturday.

  while i was at the dentist someone stopped by and dropped off this iguana--he told my mother that we could sell it in our yard sale or keep it as a pet because he has a baby that was born premature coming home from the hospital, and they can't keep the iguana anymore, please, please take it.

  Iguanas can make good pets but they have very special needs.
  
  
  For one thing, all reptiles are inefficient at absorbing calcium. It's not usually a problem because this inefficiency is offset by the sheer amount of calcium that most reptiles consume (e.g. They eat their prey bones (or exoskeleton) and all.)
  
  
  Iguanas are different because they are vegetarians by and large. Consequently you have to be very careful to make sure that they have a good source of ultraviolet light (Because they can't utilize dietary D3 --You can buy a broad spectrum flourescent for this purpose) and a good source of calcium. (Collard greens are especially good) If either of these two things are lacking, a pet iquana will break a leg for sure. (They're natural born jumpers)

  charles taze russell taught and believed that the end of 6,000 years and the beginning of the 7th would commence in 1872.

  later, the society under fred franz would change that to 1975, which resulted in the armageddon fiasco.

  I understand that the JW's no longer actively teach that the "Creative Days" were necessarily 7000 year periods.
  
  This would extricate them from the idea that the millenium of Christ (The Golden Age) absolutely must coincide with the 7th millenium of Mankind's existence. (The last thousand years of God's Sabbath.)
  
  However chucking the idea that 1975 marked the end of the 6th millenium is far more complicated than just that.
  
  Unless I'm very much mistaken, the Witnesses still teach among other things, that the second and final conquest of Jerusalem ocurred in 607 BC, that Babylon fell in 539 BC and that Jesus died in 33 AD. at the age of ~33 1/2. Further, they solidly link these two periods (BC & AD) with their interpretation of the "70 weeks of years" of Daniel 9.
  
  Having established what they believe to be "pivotal dates" in both eras, and having embraced the idea that the Bible presents an accurate albeit relative chronology, the Witnesses are pretty much stuck with the idea that Adam was created c. 4026 BC.
  
  The implications regarding 1975 are therefore obvious and inescapable. In the framework of Witness teaching, 1975 marked the start of the 7th millenium. The Witnesses can choose to talk about this or not as it pleases them, but they can't deny it without further modification to their unique chronology.
  
  What the Witnesses seem to actually have "chucked" is the significance they once attached to this anniversary

  i tried "sporting clays" today and i'm hooked.... been shooting shotguns afeild for years, but trap, skeet and clays are fun games... and really improve the shooting skills.. any other "dead-eyes" in here?.

  Grrrrr... they turned off my cable

  i have had a cable modem for at least three years now and as a side effect i had basic cable the whole time... today i get home to find that some f. what really pisses me off is that earlier this year comcast sent me a letter saying that because i did not subscribe to any cable service, they were going to add a $10 a month surcharge to my cable modem service... their way of forcing me to pay for basic cable.

  now all of the sudden they want to force me to actually subscribe to the cable service, plus all kinds of "extra" charges that cannot be avoided.

  this really pisses me off.

  I still have my DirecTV dish up and all I have to do is plug it back into my TV... but I am still restricted because I don't use a land-line phone at home. For at least six years I have only used a cell phone and I have NO desire to pay an extra $40 a month just so my damn satellite box can make a phone call every few days.

  Despite what the techs and service reps tell you, neither Direct TV nor Dish Network boxes really need a phone line except for pay-per-view. I've got a three room system and there's not a phone line hooked to any of the three boxes.

  Was Apostle Paul 1st Centaury Jehovah?s Witness?

  lets play a game and assume the bible is true, and jesus came to earth and all that, and what he taught was the truth.

  he left responsibility with his 12 apostles to look after his ?sheep?.

  a few years later on some guy reckons he has had a vision and has been chosen by god he now as good as takes over the christian congregation and makes many of its rules and writes numerous books with his rules and ideas these are eventually included in the bible, were as the 12 disciples are virtually silent.

  I'm confused. What Bible? What exactly are we assuming to be true in this exercise? As long as we're making assumptions of truthfulness why wouldn't they extend to Paul?

  Freedom of religion has always been interpreted by the courts as freedom from religion, too.

  A Jewish employer for example, cannot fire a Gentile employee for eating tref

  This generation has by no means passed away.

  just seen on the british news a commemoration of the soldiers who fought in wwi.. the generation has by no means passed away.

  there are 23 old british soldiers remaining, although sadly only 4 were able to attend the commemoration at the cenotaph.

  the youngest is still only 104.. so there is hope yet that the prophecy may still be fullfilled.. has to be quick though boys !!.

  XQ, I think you have misunderstood. The article you quote does not support the idea that:

  "....."this generation" only meant the people jesus was talking to, and it was fullfilled in 70 ce."

  The JW's have always taught that the prophetic elements in the Olivet discourse have two fulfillments, one among Jesus' contemporaries and the second in the world post 1914. The exact same article you quote under the subheading "Another Fulfillment To Come" goes on to state:

  For decades now, Jehovah?s Witnesses have taught that the current fulfillment of the sign proves that a "great tribulation" is yet to come. The present wicked "generation" will see that tribulation. It seems that there will again be an opening phase (an attack on all false religion), just as Gallus? attack in 66 C.E. opened the tribulation on Jerusalem. Then, after an interval of unspecified length, the end will come?destruction on a worldwide scale, paralleling that in 70 C.E.

  This in no way contradicts the 11/95 article.
