when did the teachnig that jesus choose jehovahs wittness in 1919 start?
It depends on what you're talking about. Jehovah's Witnesses believe that Christ conducted an inspection and rewarded them, as the "faithful and discreet slave" by appointing them over "all the masters belongings." This belief sprang into existence long after the "fact." However if you're just talking about the belief that the Watchtower acted as God's channel, this belief predates 1919

Did Noahs Ark drift about aimlessly in the Great Flood?
by EliJah inno where does it mention that noah traveled around the world in his big boat.
in fact, is says that the ark was floating "high above the earth".
also, what does matthew mean about "just like in the days of noah?

There was no global flood. When the flood story is interpreted that way, it violates basic physical laws in every discipline it touches

What would you have done?
by defd inwhat would you have done back in the 1st century when jesus came on the earthly stage and started christianity.
would you have became his follower?
how about after he left the earth and christianity began to spread by means of the apostles, would you have been involved in the many congregations that were started throughout the area?

Hi Defd:
If that ever came down to it with me. I would follow the advice of the bible. "We must obey God as ruler rather than men,"
That's a good maxim to live by.
Remember though, that "Obeying God as ruler rather than men" is exactly what many who have either left or been forced to leave feel that they have done.

What would you have done back in the 1ST Century when Jesus came on the earthly stage and started Christianity. Would you have became his follower? How about After he left the earth and Christianity began to spread by means of the Apostles, would you have been involved in the many Congregations that were started throughout the area? How about the Congregation started by Paul in Corinth? If you answer yes to this, ask yourself as a Disciple of Jesus how would I have handled all the PROBLEMS that existed in that particular Congregation? The Bible speaks of MANY problems that existed within that Congregation. It had people problems. They were not acting as Christians. They would shun, discriminate, form clicks, allow blatent wrongdoers room freely within disrupting the peace and unity. People were backbiting, fornicating, teaching wrong doctrine and the list goes on and on. That is not the only Congregation that had people problems. Pauls letter to the Ephesians, Philippians, Hebrews and so on ALL had to be addressed for problems. What would you have done? Would you have left the Corinthian Cong. to go to the Cong. in Ephesis? They too had severe problems unique to the area they lived in? Would you have concluded that this must not be Jesus Congregation? What would you have done?
Defd, Problems like you describe above can be overcome as long as you are free to do what is right yourself. However in an environment where you would be forced to go along with wrong doctrine, etc. something obviously would have to change. This is the problem with JW's. You can't just keep your mouth shut and have everything be fine. Eventually you will be forced to either go along with a wrong doctrine or you will have to leave.

Great Crowd vs. Other Sheep
by prophecor inwould someone briefly help me understand the divide that exist between the great crowd and the remnant, 144,000 who go to heaven?
what scriptural backing does the society use to justify their position that they are the only ones who are able to enjoy a covenant relationship with jesus christ, where those of the " great crowd " are only granted a relationship through extension through the 144,000?.
i've been around the truth for a large portion of my life, never really knowing this was an issue.

This meant that the rest of humanity, originally believed to largely survive Armageddon and receive blessings mediated by the Christ, was now expendable for gruesome deaths at Armageddon.
Yes......It was the doctrine of the Great Crowd that gave the JW's their exclusivistic outlook. Prior to 1935 it was clearly taught that a great many "Nominal Christians" would survive. This idea came through loud and clear in the book, The Harp Of God and the booklet, Millions Now Living Will Never Die

Pictures of Paradise
by gringojj inmy wife made a comment today about all the pictures of paradise and how none of them ever show the inside of a house.
they are always the same pictures of people outside playing with lions and water in the background.
someone was talking in another post about how hard it is to make the simplest items.

ther's plenty of enviromentaly friendly technology that could be used , we had a tv show that showed how to have hot water, electricity , refridgeration , all oil free , it was called the science shack.
I'm a fan of Adam Hart-Davis and The Science Shack and love environmentally friendly technologies.
The problem with any technology though is that it "sits" right smack on top of other technologies. We've gotten to where we are today by slowly building each technology on top of another layer by layer.
Take the solar panels on my roof for example. They're constructed basically of stainless steel and copper tubing with some sort of high-tech material joining the two for heat conduction.
Even if we consider just the copper alone, it has to be mined. Good quality copper ore yields copper at about a 1 to 500 ratio (1kg copper / 500kg ore) The ore has to be blasted into large chunks, hauled to a machine where it is mechanically broken into smaller pieces, which are then ground into powder by another machine. The powder is mixed with paraffin oil and then dumped into an aerated vat of water. Skimming this vat yields concentrated ore which then goes into a furnace where the heat drives off some of the sulphur (as sulphur dioxide) It's now mixed with flux and smelted in another furnace. This gives you a mixture of copper sulphide and iron sulphide. The iron sulphide can be separated by oxidation, leaving you 98% pure copper, but this is still not pure enough to use. The final step, which gives 99.99% pure copper that we can use in tubing and pipe, is called anode casting. This is just electrolysis in a bath of copper sulphate solution, but it's done on a large scale.
None of this is enviromentally friendly and it takes a huge amount of electricity and machinery, which are themselves the product of many other industries. --Raw materials in the form of chromium and molybdenum for bearings, iron for frames, steel for shafts and gears, aluminum for housings, rubber and plastics for conveyors, and even more machinery, because it takes machinery to make machinery.

The world the JW's detest...
by TD inhow many times have jw depictions of paradise shown cozy little gabled, shingled, lapsided, wood frame houses tastefully situated in front of mountain lakes without a hint of technology?
i've lost count.
i've always thought this picture betrays an unbelievable naivete about how technology works.

I've always thought this picture betrays an unbelievable naivete about how technology works. We all know it takes tools to build almost any kind of house. Even if we make things as simple as possible and only use handtools, (Which is time-consuming but certainly possible) they don't just grow on trees. They have to be made.
There is no escaping this simple fact. It takes tools to make tools.
The tools needed even to make simple handtools like hammers, saws, planes, bracebits and axes don't grow on trees either. Lathes, presses, milling machines, hammer forges, blast and smelting furnaces also have to be made. And the components of these tools come from many different industries. --Precision bearings, electrical controls, hydraulics, pneumatics, gauges and instruments of all types. This in turn requires even more specialized tooling.
The truth is, almost any manufactured product you lay your eyes on is really "sitting" on top of a very large pyramid or other technologies. And it is this huge network of technologies along with the infrastructure to support them (e.g. railroads, mines, power plants etc.) that in large part "makes" the world we live in the very thing that JW's seem to detest ---An industrialized society were the vast majority live in cities and work for others.
A JW reading this may object that I've overcomplicated things by injecting too much technology into the picture and that's true to an extent. Metallurgy, for example was an established technology long before we had electrical power. However this makes the problem worse not better. You can take technology out of the picture, but the more you remove, the more back-breaking human physical labor it takes to replace it. --Labor to mine iron ore, labor to mine coal, labor to stoke coal fired furnaces, and steam engines, labor to cut trees by hand, etc.
Any way you look at it, without an industrialized society, you don't have cozy little gabled, shingled, lapsided, wood frame houses. You don't nice brick houses either. You don't even have log cabins. How about a mud hut with a thatched roof?
