so much of jw belief is based on just one or two scriptures, while they ignore the thrust of true christianity!

Thats what I've always thought...the talk about not making a big deal out of a person, but like you say, I've heard of extremely lavish parties for people leaving for Bethel, graduating, etc. Whats the difference if its a small gathering for cake and celebrating another year of life? admit, I was laughing when I said that. Well he asked me if I believe in Jesus, to which I said "no" and he starts acting like he is going to
faint. I told him to get out the Oscars will judge him.
LOL I laughed at that.... sounds like you handled it just right! I never thought about it at the time, but I guess we looked like that...even though I wouldve never chased someone down. I was usually too embarrassed to open my mouth! [8>]
hi all i was thinking about this the other day and how the elders say that they have gods direction when they have judicial meetings, if that is the case and gods spirit is directing their decision then why do they have the allowance for an appeal, after all if god is supposed to be directing them there would be no mistake in the decision right?

Once I was being talked to in an elders meeting by 2 very nice elders and the sister who studied with me. They were all trying to get me to see the point of getting baptized, and soon (the July assembly was coming up). So the sister, who is very fragile and cries easily, starts crying saying how her kids never went into the Truth. The elders turn their attention on her and she is bawling like a baby. I start to see the absurdness of the whole damn thing and start laughing hysterically. I couldnt stop...I just kept laughing, so hard I was crying and about to pee myself. Well the elders look at me crazily and the sister says she heard people under stress laugh to not show their emotions. They nod and say, 'oh' like they understand. I was really laughing because it was hilarious being around such loonies LOL.

I think the reason behind the
"appeal" addition is that it "sounds" good when you're getting the axe, and that in
"democratic" countries, it lends a feeling of fairness to the issue. Just window dressing and
show, like the WTS Public Relations website........lies and innuendo.

I was never baptized, but the elders got wind of a false rumor about me. My mother who visciously lied about me, told stories that she 'thought' were true, but knew fully well they werent. Anyway, the elders told me I would be announced as unapproved association. They told me I could appeal it, and I did. I wrote a letter about how they had no proof, no witnesses, and the elder involved had personal agendas against me. I asked if only I could have another elder handle my case, then I would gladly accept any decision they made.
They never even considered it. They said 'No, we're not going to give you the appeal. The elder would think the way we did anyway." and announced me. I never felt it was handled fairly at all...but I get the sense that they were trying to look like they were fair and just.

So really it shows how these people respond this way..they are being fed this constantly. I know myself, when I asked my mother if it might not be the Truth, she said that even if it wasnt, it protected us and did no harm. I dont really agree with that statement, in full.

my hope for over 30 years was the same as many here on this site.
when i made my decesion to no longer me a jw at first i just figured that i was a goat and that i would just die at armageddon along with all the other wicked ones.
well after doing some research on the dubs and on religion in general i have come to some differnt conclusions about life,death and what might happen when you die.. i have to be honest and tell you that it has been difficult to accept the fact that any hope of any sort of life after death is very unfounded.. i have come to believe that religion is for people who cannot accept the only certainty we have in this life is that you are going to die.. my hope is that i can live this life and be able to raise my children up to be responsible and productive adults.

what makes shunning in this religion real tough to deal with...(as opposed to being defrocked or ex-communicated, etc.):::.
why it's not as simple as "why don't you just walk away?".
1-many jws lack social skills from birth in jw upbringings, lack of diversity in associations, controlled environments sheltered from the real world.. 2-lack of outside contacts or support "safety net" of outside mentors.. 3-discouragement of seeking any outside independent sources, education or professional help or information.
