i am really appreciative of the work done by many here related to the un hot-topic, for those who contacted the un and those brave enough to approach the wts directly too.

i have printed my copy of the letter and have saved an image for use this weekend.. heres another thought on the un thing.

during the last couple of weeks i have checked the watchtower main web-site and the media site for references for the un.

You said nothing negative is said about the UN at their sites. That is not strictly true:

That quote is hardly in support of the UN charter, calling them a failure. If it wasn't for the UN what would be the state of the world today? We'd be in a bigger heap of mess than we are today with the "do nothing but ridicule" attitude of the WTS.

You are right about the amount of negative stuff you will find in comparison in the printed material. But then again, the WTS media site says JWs don't sever family ties!!!

Here’s another thought on the UN thing. During the last couple of weeks I have checked the Watchtower main web-site and the Media site for references for the UN. (I posted some quotes and links to pages to show what the WTS puts out in public.) To find the references I used their own search facility and this leads to my question. Many web-sites monitor the frequency of the search words. If the WTS does the same they will have noticed that “UN” and “United Nations” have been search for quite frequently. I wonder if the large amount of interest in this topic has been noticed and will it get worse now I have mentioned it?

If they do monitor what is searched for on their sites I bet UN related topics account for the number 1 subject.

My theory is that 75% of the posters on the ultra-JW boards are ex-members or fringe members. The board owners would be shocked to know how few "faithful" are actually there. And I think the very worst of the JWs are not actually in. As an example, our resident professed JWs here are not exactly "poster-children" for the WTS are they?

I like your comments about Gillies. He has quite a reputation...he once debated with the Liberal Elder on BBC radio. It's a wonder he didn't get demoted after that lying performance.

Regarding his quotes this week, the Guardian this week quoted him as saying:

Paul Gillies, the Witnesses' spokesman in Britain, said: "We do not have hostile attitudes to governing bodies and if we are making representations on issues to the UN we will do so."
"There are good and bad bodies just as there are good and bad politicians.

I take it that on Monday the UN was a "good" body and today it is a "bad" body. It would seem in withdrawing their association with the UN/DPI the WTS considers the UN to be a "bad" body. What does the UN think about that? And what about the faithful JWs?

MAJOR UN/WTS/NGO NEWS - WTS IS GONE

as of 11:45 this morning (i had a telphone call this morning with the refernce department person named holly at 212-963-7234), i can tell you that the watchtower has disassociated itself from the united nations dpi!!!!!!.

the dpi is now taking them off the list.

the dpi requested the list removal to be done this morning!!!!!.

This is not a win for the dubs. The Guardian will certainly do a follow-up article and this will gain even more publicity as the previous statements from the WTS representative (who I had been on FS with when a teenager) will now appear to be spin or lies. Other news orgs will pick this up too.

This is an embarrassing retreat by the Watchtower.

is there any way to get a subscription to the magazines with out having to go to the hall??

i would like to see what kinda stuff is in them these days.. just for fun:) an elder came by a few months ago and i asked if i could have a subscription and he said yes he would fill one out when i came to the hall to make a donation.. uugghh no way i am going there.. can anyone help me?

Whatnow,

I thought that subscriptions were mainly handled through the KH. So an elder refusing your subscription might be a way to stop you getting the mags directly. I suppose that is the WTS idea of pastoral care.

I have obtained mags from laundramats. They are given away so I took then. I thought of asking the manager if I could have all of the supply in exchange for some decent maganzines with interesting articles. I didn't bother as I can't really see any point in reading the mags at every issue. It is all rehashed stuff...5 years of bound volumes covers everything you want to know. When there is a juicy bit of "new Light" it is always reported on the Internet and I have on occasion downloaded scans of articles for reading and quoting from. I frequently have to go to the airport and on weekdays I visit the JW desk and request the latest mags. Sometimes I have even been known to talk to the bored JWs on the desk and ask some policy questions. I tell them my parents are Witnesses...it makes them feel warm inside

Has the WTS ever made a prediction that came true?

this morning a thought occured to me "has the society ever made a prediction or prophecy that has come true"?.

most of us are familiar with the prophecies or dates the wts has emphasized in the past.

of course all of those predictions never proved to be accurate so the question is, "if this is god's prophetic organization where is the proof"?.

I don't know if you were being serious,

:The rise/formation of the United Nations.
The dual world power of Britain and America.

The United Nations thing Knorr stated could be gleaned from the newspapers of the day. (Already mentioned on this thread) They didn't say much about the League of Nations until after it disappeared. Now they are in bed with the UN all bets are off of any future significance the UN will have in WTS interpretation of the Bible. (See my comment on the New Light on UN thread)

When did WTS prophesy that Britain and the USA would be a dual world power? Didn't the WTS observe the change in fortunes of the British Empire and the gradual rise of America during the first half of the 20th century. Britain gave up a lot of its Empire's naval bases to the US in World War II in exchange for Battleships. No prophecy just an attempt to fit history with Biblical interpretation.

If you say enough and comment enough you might be able to claim that you made a prediction and it came true. The WTS has made lots and lots of predictions. Some obvious ones came true the rest are glossed over and forgotten about. Do we need to list them again?

What would it take?

in view of the jw reactions on items such as the ngo thing, harbouring child molesters, it made me wonder about what it would take for the average jw to really grasp that the gb, the org and lots of its doctrine is not what it claims to be.. personally i've experienced that after a longwinded argument with an elder about the validity of the 1914 doctrine, he eventually agreed that it wasn't as solid as he thought and that it could be incorrect.

did he see the light (or its absence)?

interestingly enough, he immediately added that even if all this were true/untrue, it would not invalidate his loyalty to the org & gb.

"Chipping away" is a good term. It took a lot of chipping before I really saw the light. Sometimes, actually frequently, I am embarrassed to admit that I was involved and reached a level of rank within the JW/WTS religion. However, I count myself lucky to have been able to escape. I relied a great deal on the Internet for information but by then my faith in all things Watchtower was already shaken. Seeing the corruption on the inside was the main chunk chipped away for me but the "Generation" change finally did it.

I hope that the general apathy that exists among many still-in will be greatly added to by the UN debacle. Everyone is different and different events shake different people. But the WTS involvement with the UN may shake a lot more people. We will have to see.

WBTS and NGO - why are they not on the list

above is the list of ngo's registered with the un as per the un website.. the society are not on the list, are they or arn't they ngo?

if they are then why are they not on the list.. answers on a postcard please!!.

For anyone who hasn't seen the list the links on the tis thread are very good. The Watchtower Bible and Tract Society of New York is clearly listed among other friends including FRIENDS OF THE UNITED NATIONS.

There's no escaping the fact that the WTS has joined up in league with other religious groups not matter what their excuse. If, subsequently, they get the boot and claim "persecution" it will have to be done in the KHs only as to claim in print is likely to cause more trouble for them. I don't think the members are going to buy into persecution when it will have been self-induced.
