If the R&F made it all they did a good job of preaching about it and spreading the date and did so all on their own initiative. They did such a great job that the kids I went to school joked about the year when it arrived and used to ask me exactly when this year (1975...(9th/10h grade for me US style) God was going to destroy the world.

obviously a lot of you are no longer jws, for whatever reason, but surely you can find something better to do with your time.
you seem to spend a lot of your spare time slating the society or picking holes in your former beliefs.. if you've left and think what jws believe is a load of rubbish, thtat fine, you cn do what you want, but why you have to go on about it?
if being a jw means so little to you, why not just leave it behind and get on with your life?

i took a class in cultural anthropology that touched on the subjects of language and doublespeak, loaded language, jargon etc.
i set to reading the "live forever" book looking for these things.

I read all the publications with a different eye now. It is amazing I didn't see the publications that way until relatively recently.
There are many assumptions made in the first chapter (Live Forever)all of which can be challenged. From para 10
"Where is it that humans normally want to live forever?”
Most people have a different notion of everlasting life encompassing everything from heaven to reincarnation. While few people want to die most don’t have a concept of living forever on Earth.
From para 17
Many persons who study world events say that a great change is in the making. For example, the editor of the Miami, USA, Herald , wrote: “Anyone with half a logical mind can put together he cataclysmic events of the past few years and see that the world is at a historic threshold….(the ubiquitous dot dot dots) It will change the way men live.”
Of course, when was the quote written? No reference is given. Was it the 1950’s, 60’s, when? Remember this book was written before the Berlin wall came down, before the end of the USSR, before the invention of the PC before the widespread use of the Internet, before the Gulf War, before the International Space Station. All these events could qualify for “it will change the way men live”. (Can’t you tell by the use of the word “men” that the quote is quite old?)
Other assumptions, Noah and Adam were real people, that Isaiah’s writings were meant to be literal, that civilization is going downhill, and that we must hurry.
Lisa, you are right about studying this book, it is very educational. But so is the Watchtower mag. I read it with a much more careful and analytical mind now.

i apologize in advance if this has already been discussed here.. at my daughter's pioneer meeting they were told that leaving literature in phone booths and laundromats is "littering".. since when?

The WBTS version is even more absurd.
Don't read too much in to my original comment...I'd hate to be the originator of yet another urban myth. I made my comment up although it is based on stories I have either heard or read. One was the guy who found a Watchtower magazine in a dumpster and found the "truth". The other was based on the story of a magazine left with a tribal chief who distributed individual pages and some who read the pages found the "truth". But that sounds about as absurd as my contrived version!!!

It is a great shame to see brothers and sisters how have given so much in service to Jehovah, not only give up, but trying to undo all their fine work. I enjoy being a part of Jehovah's organisation - the wholesome association, having meaning in my life etc. Even if people have had bad experiences in the past, Jehovah sorts it all out, even if it seems He is doing nothing, as I have seen for myself.
If you believe in wholesome association what are you doing here?

Thank you I have a very nice life now. I don’t rank in the top 20 posters. Some of the top posters here are the defenders of the WTS…talk about not having lives. This weekend, I managed to visit the garden nursery twice and plant some of my gardens with flowers and tomatoes. I made a planter and two window boxes and added them to my deck. I took a trip to a local art fair stopped off and had a print framed. Had a picnic by the lake, saw a movie (Shrek), answered a systems pager call from work, called my mom, and had time to work downtown (3 hrs) waiting tables on a project for feeding the homeless. And my house is clean and tidy.
I enjoy my life to the full and I will die when my time comes just like you will.

I haven't heard that. Placing in phone booths is littering, I agree. As for laundomats, I can't really see a problem. If the owners give permission for free magaizines to be left how is that littering? Laundromats are a convenient way to find back issues of the W & A mags.
Are you certain this isn't a CO's pet peeve about sloppy literature placements. Afterall I thought whole tribes had become Witnesses after finding a single page from a Watchtower (in a dumpster too)which they divided up and studied every night for two years and then decided it was the Troof.
