hello this is my first topic on this forum.. i left the jws 18 months ago and am still recovering.
it was after reading crisis of conscience that i was brave enough to leave although i had serious doubts before i was always scared in case it was right!!
and i was wrong.. however when they changed the generation in 1995 that caused me great trauma as i had accepted that as absolute fact and based my life on it.
LittleMike,
I already had doubts but when the Generation change was made I really thought something was wrong with the religion. I was out for good a little over a year later. Like you I had long believed that the end would come within my working life if not sooner (I was still in school in 1975 and we all expected the big A around that time). Now I am planning catch-up and saving for the years in the latter part of my life when I should be taking it easy and enjoying life to the full.
Welcome too!

Poztate,
Perhaps it would be wise not to speculate who the "faithful and discrete slave" is as well. Meantime after studying Isaiah good JWs will redo Revelation and consider how the 2nd trumpet blast was fulfilled when Judge Rutherford blew his nose at the International Convention in Neverheardof Springs, Idaho.

when people hear the name jehovah, they automatically think jehovah witnesses.
i know that in old catholic bibles, the word jehovah might be found or jahweh.
is it the jw's who came out with that name first or did other religions use it before the jw's?
I was quite surprised at how frequently the name Jehovah and Yahweh are used in other churches. Not in every other sentence (ala JWs) but in prayers, collects, hymns and anthems. As for "Guide Me Oh Thou Great Jehovah," it is a great hymn.

ok, i've done the beer survey, now its the mixed drinks survey.. i personally like the 4 horseman (1/4 jack 1/4 rum 151, 1/4 everclear, and 1/4 tequila).
it'll put you on your ass quick.
i also like a good bull buster (yager w/ red bull).
My favorite mix was the Manhattan I had at the Sioux Falls SD, Raddison. I had a free drink coupon given to me when I checked in and, later in the bar, I asked the girl serving for a Manhattan. Apparently new, or just filling in, she said she didn't know how to mix one. I said, "it's 5 parts Bourbon and 2 parts dry Vermouth with a dash of Bitters, on the rocks." She made a drink with 5 shots of Bourbon and 2 of Vermouth!
I tried again the next night but the real bar tender was on duty and the drink was considerably smaller.

Flower,
Good for them!! If I was smarter when I was their age I would have told the JW's to take their rules and SHOVE them too!
I agree, I wish I could have been like that. I hope they become role models for new young JW kids. Unless they are rich and famous I doubt many who who copy the sisters Williams will be allowed to stay as good standing JWs...but that is not a bad thing.

the other day when the overseer was over, he started talking about how good the cong was and how it was the best as far as publishers.
he mentioned that we only had 0 irregular, and 0 inactive publishers.
this is bs.
I had temporary care of record cards and I made it a priority to get as many of the nearly inactive to report some time. Some felt they were unworthy to count what little they did but I told them that even the smallest contibution is appreciated (widow's mite etc) and every little bit counts as a bucket of water is still filled with droplets. I also knew that a large number in the congregation reported only a couple of hours each month and thus those that only managed to report a time every couple of months were not that much diferent. I didn't lie but I think some made up time just to appease me.
But, I did remove the record cards of those who were inactive after a year. I didn't want the CO asking about some in the cong including my sister and BiL who were fading. I also destroyed some letters that came with records cards sent by other cong' elders. I know most of the elder body had read the letters but it was better to give them as clean a sheet as I could.

Hi Kenneson,
I read the same article in this week's Newsweek. It got me thinking. Who do they call and who assigns the territory? Is this just their excuse for not actually going out on FS at all. Getting rejected via the telephone is one thing but what happens if they find interest? Do they just pass on the call because if they turned up for a return visit they still be asked to autograph a Bible.
Very strange, but when you have money and fame you don't have to follow normal JW rules.

cats may well live with us, but they don't live like us.
i've noticed over the years that how we perceive stuff and how cats process the same info is often so different as to be almost alien.
here are a few i've been thinking about recently (all contributions of more examples gratefully received!
F.R.A.P. Frenetic (or feline) random activity periods. When the cat runs around wild for no apparent reason. Our cat often goes on a FRAP, or is FRAPpy.

The canine version, CRAP, is what dogs do.
something i have been wondering about lately.. whether you believe in god or not, are a christian or some other religion or no religion at all, i'd be interested in your opinion.. according to those who believe in the bible including most christians, god condemns the use of 'special' powers/abilities.
for example, esp, tarot, astrology, consulting a medium, spells etc.
however, if god created us, did he not give us the ability to develop and use such powers?
I hear Michael Jackson has a friend who can bend spoons through special powers.

BTW I can bend spoons by over use of my limited physical power. Now if I could do it on the sly maybe I could get rich by claining special finger rubbing and mind talents. See some skeptics sites too
