This is the view presented by a female JW after attending the "in"famous WT study: «I really enjoyed Saturday afternoon's study of the Watchtower article, I was particularly amazed at the statistics of alcohol and drug abuse amongst colleges and universities! I didn't know it was so bad. I actually had a talk to my 7 year old son on the way to school this morning about what he wants to do when he gets older, he wants to be a school teacher so I explained to him that it was not important at this time to become something important such as a teacher or a fireman or a doctor but to instead focus on teaching more and more people about Jehovah! Well he agreed wholeheartedly with me and his next words nearly made me cry they were so sweet, he said "Mum, ok when I grow up I'm going to teach as many people as I can about Jehovah and about the new system, but can I still be a teacher in the new system and teach people about Jehovah then too?" He is such a sweet boy with a kind heart and i'm very proud of him, he really does love Jehovah»

Quite a few mention the practice of Disfellowhipping and shunning, since that has been a topic often discussed in media (newspapers as well as television). I am almost sure that this issue and the blood issue is the most controversial aspect of JW in Europe. In Europe they are also almost universally referred to as a sect or cult, almost never as a church which is a term often commonly used in the US when referring to them. It is rare that they are referred to as christians. Mostly a movement with christian background or something along those lines.

For former elders: Did having the authority to DF make you feel powerful?
by juni injust curious about this.
do you realize now what the shunning practice does to a person's emotional health?
to shun or isolate a human being is one of if not the worst punishment.

During a period of more than a decade, I only took part in one JC. I always tried to stay away from it. When I finally did volunteer, I did in a case I felt "comfortable" with. He was DF, but I was naive enough to think that he would return within some months. However, as far as I know, he did not. Perhaps I did make him a service. The shunning thing was one of the main reasons I felt discomfort with being a JW, and an elder in particular. I never felt a power trip from being an elder...

One time a CO asked the children to mention some writers of the bible. One kid raised his arm and said with a loud voice: SATAN! The CO responded in his calm manner: I am sure he wanted to, but he was not allowed. The parents looked somewhat troubled though.

Looking back as the householder -- How well did you do?
by Jourles inyesterday i was thinking back to when i used to go in service.
i was never a shining example for the ministry.
in fact, i was never used on the tms for any field service "how to" parts!

I guess I was pretty good at it. Had an average of some 40-90 magazines a month, and brought five people to be publishers.

Now they "Excommunicate"??
by Lilycurly insome of you might had read that in one of my other post...my father, who is the only jw in the family, came up with the word "excommunicated" when talked about disfellowshipement.
now, nobody here seems to have any idea what this is all about.
he seems pretty certain that it's now the proper word to use.

Sorry if I conveyed wrong information. In the Scandinavian edition I got hold of, the term used was excommunication, which is a new rendering in that languge. I presumed the same rendering was used in the original English edition, since the translated editions almost always abide closely to the English original.

The term excommunicate is being used instead of disfellowship in the "Organization book". The change of wording has also been implemented into other languages. It is a politically more correct term I guess. Also, the word previously used had a very bad tone to it in many languages, whereas excommunicate sounds more technical and some (uneducated) ones might not even understand it.
