How much have you changed since you left the JWs..........
by fifi40 inthe reason that i ask this question is for two reasons mainly.. firstly, my experience as a jw and within the various congregations i was part of, was that they were a very mixed bag.
there were those who were very devout, studious and appeared to be very humble and placid in nature.
there were those that were very judgemental of others.

Used to be kind, yet strict on myself and others. Humerous, but very prudent (not anymore). Talkative, but always kept within theocratic boundaries (not at all anymore). Generous and hospitable (however, due to shunning not being able to extend those qualities to my parents/sisters). Now I m trying to be tolerant, non-judgemental and open... (of course having been an elder, and now an open gay, divorced, yet living close to my ex, is by far a big change from my former life, yet I remain much of the same in my core personality - some qualities are even easier to show now. I find it easier to show the socalled fruits of the spirit now when it is not talked about all the time.... (apart from the last one LOL)

Norway
by InquiryMan inin norway, the ombudsman of children s welfare intervened and a lot of fuss were made when it was made clear that jws endorsed corporal punishment in their publications even though it was banned by law.
it was even mentioned in the national news.
the coordinator was even interviewed on tv and the day after it was proven from the wt indexes that he had been lying.... i remember it was very embarrassing.

interesting do read Norm. I always wondered how the newspapers managed to get hold of that piece of information before it was even given by the organization to the "brothers". I also remember there was some news on alternative civilian service in the media. Were you sort of involved there?

Has anyone been in one of the dramas while a JW?
by Nowman init probably was one of my few happy moments of being a jw.
my mom, dad, and i were asked to be in the modern day drama, think it was in 1988-1990 (not sure exactly).
i played a worldly girl named "dolly winters" who was considered a bold and brazon girl who eventually studied to become one of jws because of a good example jw that she went to school with.

I played a brother called Barry (in English) who became a witness in spite of his parents opposition. He uttered the words: If my father or mother leaves me, Jehovah will accept me.
Well, kind of prophetic, I ended up leaving Jehovah, and my parents left me too...

Gay/Lesbian Symbols
by Crumpet inthe whole rainbow thread piqued my curiosity.
i have often wondered how you know without speaking to someone if they are gay and you are not in a known gay place - like um brighton or the candy bar in london.. does anyone know of any other gay and lesbian symbols or signs?.
someone told me once that a ring on your pinkie was a sign - can anyone verify the truth of this?.

I must be somewhat shizophrenic, I guess... Am gay, former elder, shunned by family, left the organization due to teachings/organizational flaws, yet at times defend the witnesses but not the organization... I make a distinctin of JWs and the Watchtower. I guess three decades of witness-life cannot be erased, and that is not desirable either. Have learnt many good qualities: being able to stand up for what you are even though the majority don t endorse it. However, it is much easier to be a gay man, than a JW man. You´re much more integrated culturally eventhough you at times feel being in a marginal group.

Still it cannot be denied that it has been / and is endorsed by the Watchtower society, varying on the cultural/social attitudes in their local communities.

And Liv Ullmann is Norwegian. And Norm, thanks for providing the details from the inside... I remember the whole matter quite vividly, although I was a loyal witness back then. I remember thinking when thor was on TV. He is just like "Kim Il Sung".... Why didn´t they send Hans Jacob Lilletvedt instead, handsome and eloquent....

In my congregation it was explicitly said from the platform that no spanking was to take place in the KH.
