Police: Parents beat daughter to death with umbrella
Wednesday, December 3, 2003 Posted: 7:42 PM EST (0042 GMT)
Joella Reaves, 11, was beaten to death by her parents, police say.
Story ToolsWhen she attempted to escape, she was hogtied. She was left with no food or water or sanitary or sleeping necessities.
-- Arrest warrant YOUR E-MAIL ALERTS Domestic Violence Child Abuse Crime, Law and Justice Georgia or Create your own Manage alerts | What is this? ATLANTA, Georgia (AP) -- An 11-year-old girl's parents tied her up in the garage, starved the child and beat her with an umbrella until she died during the Thanksgiving holiday, police said.
The sixth-grader tried to escape her home in Stockbridge just south of Atlanta, but she was only punished more severely -- she was left without food, water, a bathroom or a bed, police said.
The girl's father, 37-year-old Rodney Michael Reaves, and her stepmother, 38-year-old Charlott Lynett Reaves, were arrested Monday and charged with felony murder and cruelty to children.
The girl, Joella Reaves, was beaten over her entire body with an umbrella and paddle for several days, according to the arrest warrant. Her cause of death was listed as blunt force trauma.
"When she attempted to escape, she was hogtied. She was left with no food or water or sanitary or sleeping necessities," the warrant said.
Joella was being punished by her parents, according to the warrant. Police, attorneys and child welfare officials would not say what she had done to anger her parents.
The father made the 911 call for help Monday morning, said Lt. Joe Tammaro of Henry County police. Joella was dead when emergency workers arrived.
"She made very good grades. She was a very personable student," said Jim Davis, principal at Eagle's Landing Middle School. "She had her circle of friends, she was relatively quiet."
Rodney Reaves, a gunner's mate on the USS Wasp based in Norfolk, Virginia, said he is innocent, said his attorney, Bruce Harvey.
"Mr. Reaves absolutely denies any liability for the tragic death of his daughter," Harvey said. "We categorically deny that."
Charlott and Rodney Reaves are charged in their daughter's death.
Harvey declined comment about events leading to the girl's death.
An attorney for Charlott Reaves, Michael Antoniolli, said it is too soon to make a statement. Charlott Reaves works as a vascular ultrasound technician at a hospital.
The Reaves family has no history of child abuse, said Phyllis Shrader, director of the Henry County Department of Family and Children's Services. Joella's brother was put in state custody.

In 1997, there was a whole group of ex JW's from Japan who came to the Ex JW Convention in Pennsylvania. Many gave their testimonies and they told the crowd that in Japan it's legal for you to be "kidnapped" so to speak for deprogramming purposes. Perhaps 639 congregations have been kidnapped...

Just lost our parents....
by 2escaped lifers inwell, the shunning begins.
we finally had "the" discussion with my parents, that we no longer consider ourselves jw's, and a little bit of why we felt that way.
of course, "dad the elder and po" and mom the pioneer dutifully informed us that not only will they be "loyal to the organization" and shun us completely, but that he would immediately let the other elders know, so that proper judicial action could be taken.. it was a heart wrenching discussion, with all of us, including my two young boys (9 and 10) all balling our eyes out.

I informed my loved ones that I no longer considered myself a JW either, and the shunning happened for a while. After a while though, they started speaking to me again and they have decided not to join the rest of us this year for Thanksgiving, even though it was held at their house the past few years (not really Thanksgiving, we're just eating turkey because our employer gave it to us...) pleez....

What do you belive happens to us after we die?
by Singing Man ini was raised a jehovah's witness and like most are aware, they presently belive that by and large everyone who dies ceases to exist.
i accepted this fate for most of my life and i guess i still do for the most part, but now that i do not go to the meetings what am i to accept death to be, as i will die as well as my friends and family at some point.
i think that idea of being in gods memory made sense to me as i have excepted it for forty five of my fifty years of being alive.

I definitely believe our souls move on. I truly believe we will be reunited with our loved ones who have gone before us.

For me personally, The Sound of Music will always be a favorite. The Wizard of Oz also. I am not bonkers about Gone With the Wind like many people, however the last few years I have only really liked two movies, Shawshank Redemption and Contact. These movies were and are absolutely awesome. Another favorite of mine with Harrison Ford - Witness. I also love watching American Graffiti, what a riot to see all the stars before they were stars!
