Engagement party - not invited
by cyberdyne systems 101 inok i'm not at all surprised to not be invited to my sisters engagement party as she is a jw and i'm df.
i was telling my girlfriend about it and she was shocked that as a family member i wouldn't be involved.
she already knows that as far as a wedding goes i'll probably be invited to the ceremony but not reception and that i'll be shunned at the kingdom hall, but i think the fact that the engagement is at my parents place she was so surprised that someone is so cut off from family things when in an unapproved status as per the wts.. like most people who have never been a witness, they don't realise how mental the whole thing is until they witness it.

To be shunned is no fun - it's a horrible exercise in power and humiliation. There are many of us who have been through that. An engagement party with a bunch of JW's would probably be the most boring thing on Earth to attend anyway. Consider yourself lucky.

Does your personal vehicle reflect your personality?
by Gregor inthere is a clever volkswagen tv ad currently running in the u s that depicts various types of people driving cars that reflect their personality, like older males driving sleek sports cars to compensate for their "shortcomings" or a younger man driving an expensive european sedan as he pronounces with a bullhorn "because my father never hugged me!
or another who says "because i make more money than you!
have any of you ever gotten your self image tangled up with a vehicle?

I want a Hybrid 4-Door Honda - besides being great for the cost of gas; it's also a great service car!

What Things Do You Find Interesting About Jehovah's Witnesses?
by minimus inthere's a lot that i find intriguing about the witnesses.
i'm amazed that a jw can ignore what is obvious regarding their own hypocrisy.
they know that only jws are supposed to make it into the great tribulation yet if they are asked, "what about the babies or the billions that never heard the truth?

So basically they're saying give, give, give if you want to live, live, live...
They always used to criticize the Christendom and it's begging for money - I am surprised they just don't pass the plate!

Other 'superstitions' of JWs (other than fortune cookies)
by Jim_TX inwell... the 'fortune cookie' thread got me to thinking about all of the silly things that my mom (and the jws) did when i was growing up.. it has been a while, and so i know that i won't be able to remember all of them.. my mom refused to buy a soft drink named 'sprite' - as its' logo included a small impish-looking fella (a sprite) that wore a bottlecap for a hat.
she claimed it was deemunz.. my mom hesitated to buy fried chicken at a place named 'church's fried chicken', as she wasn't sure if the name meant 'religion', or was a person's last name.. my mom refused to shop at salvation army - cause it would be supporting another religion.. the folks at the local kingdom hall came down hard on my mom cause one of my sisters wore a cute little 'sailor's dress'... it had boat anchors, and other 'sailor' emblems on the buttons, that were considered 'militaristic' by the powers-that-be at the local kh.
(i'm not sure if my mom put on different buttons, or scrapped the dress entirely.

Are "Born-Again Christians" a Cult?
by booker-t ini know alot of people might be offended by this question but i think it is a good question to ask.
born-agains are always pointing the cult finger at jw's, mormons, moonies, 7-day adventists, oneness pentacostals, armstrong, etc; but could they themselves be a cult?
as the old saying goes "it takes one to know one"

I don't think that all BAC's are a cult - As I have learned, you can have cult thinking in any group...
I worked with a woman who thought Amway was it...Definitely a cult!
