Yes, they are out on my campus as well--every Wednesday. They have a table and several stacks of literature, but no Watchtowers. Seems kinda lonely though. I never see anyone talking to them.

JWs preaching at college
by truman intoday, while i was making my way across my college campus between classes, i encountered a surprising sight.
there in the quad was a table with literature spread out on it, and two jws sitting beside a sign proclaiming "free bible course".
how interesting, in light of all the recent denouncing of higher education, that they should be right there in the middle of academia.

Yes, I too wondered how the students seeing the JW info table would feel if the JWs were up front about their negative attitudes concerning higher education. Also, the subtle manipulation of language they used on their sign, saying 'free bible course' instead of their normal terminology, 'free Bible study'. It seems an obvious attempt to align their program with an academic mind set and make it seem the equivalent of a college course. Which it certainly is not. In college courses, the student is expected to assimilate information and then be able to synthesize conclusions and extrapolations from what has been learned and apply these insights in new ways. The answers are not always to be found in the text; a student must actively think his or her way to them. In JW study, a student is expected (allowed) only to absorb information and regurgitate it back unchanged. The first method of learning is dynamic, the second stagnant. but you guys are right--table sitting sure is an easy way to count time for field service.

How interesting, in light of all the recent denouncing of higher education, that they should be right there in the middle of academia. Even more interesting, and even a bit intriguing, was the fact that on the JW's information table, not a single Watchtower was to be found. Neither was there any obvious identification of them as JWs. The literature on the table was only the Awake and a few brochures about 'the new world'.
The lack of open JWness about their display made me wonder whether they were trying to reel people in before disclosing that fact. I don't believe I have ever seen a JW info table before without a Watchtower.
I did not stop to speak to them today, but I may if they are there next week.

Ex-Witness English tutor encounters a current Witness tutee...
by Rosie Angel ini've been tutoring this nice esl lady named patrice for awhile now.
i knew she was a witness, since i saw her studying out of the revelation book, so i kept my guard up around her.
somehow, though, i recognized an uncited passage from the nwt ecclesiastes in a paper, and i mentioned that she really needed to cite passages from the bible, just like any other book, so she used the odd witness citation.

Hi Rosie,
I too am an English tutor who works with a lot of ESL students (as well as native English speakers) at a community college writing center. I also have encountered Witnesses among my tutees. I have never had one of them discover that I am an ex-JW, but once my tutee was a young girl who was in my former congregation. Of course she recognized me. Later, when I saw that she never scheduled with me again, I found out that she had told another tutor that she would not work with me because I no longer go to the KH.
Here is a suggestion for how to deal with the situation: Try thinking about how you would handle it if the student were trying to push her agenda on some other subject (sexual orientation, politics, etc.). What would you say to her to steer the session back to tutoring? As much as you can, detach yourself from an emotional response to the problem.
Good luck!

Very nice to meet my fellow Phi Theta Kappans! As for my college career, I am an English major. Math is something I try to avoid (though I am taking my final transferable math course this semester. The instructor says it is "math for poets") .
Have either of you been to any of the larger PTK events? It really is quite an active organization if one wants to become involved. Mostly because I was able to accomodate the relevant dates, I was sent by my local chapter to attend the week-long PTK National Honors Institute convention last summer in Delaware. Interestingly enough, the topic of study was "Gold, Gods, and Glory: The Global Dynamics of Power". We actually had Ghandi's grandson there as a speaker. It was quite an experience.
There were times at this event though that my anti-cult spider senses were tingling. Some of the members have an almost religious devotion to the organization. Overall though, it was very worthwhile, and no one tried to baptize me.

Hi Jeeprube,
Did you join Phi Theta Kappa (the 2-year college honor society)? When I became a member of PTK last year, being listed on the National Dean's List was automatic. It sounds good, doesn't it? Enjoy! I sent in the biographical info when my invitation letter came. I sure don't think it will be a bad thing to have on a resume. But my cynical side tells me that it is a really great way to sell very expensive books and accessories to us hard-working college students. Still, I couldn't resist. I bought the book (around $70 and up).

i was taken off the ministry school talk # 2,couldn't pray for the congregation, was taken off the sound equipment, couldn't pass out literature, couldn't receive a blood card and finally couldn't receive any books because i wasn't considered part of the congregation.that was fine with me.. what were the signs you received from your congregation telling you that you were weak in the faith?.

This sort of treatment was the beginning of the end for me as a JW. My 20-year-old son, who was one of the very few of his generation to still be attending the KH, was removed from his privileges running the sound system because he failed to turn in 10 hours a month of field service.
He was turning in time every month, just not enough to satisfy these arbitrary requirements, requirements which were never stated up front when he began his duties. This young man was struggling with his attachment to the JW life but was sticking with it mostly because of his love for me.
The job at the KH gave him a connection to the org. and made him feel useful. When the ax-wielding elder told him that he was cut off from his job, he was hurt to the point that he no longer had any motivation to keep going. I remember telling that elder at the time that what he needed was a helping hand, not a shove out the door, but to no avail.
That's their sort of love, I guess.
Anyway, it all worked out in the long run because after my son left, I soon followed. Not the result they were expecting, I imagine.

I am glad to see someone mention this problem because it is one that mostly gets passed by. I too was a sexually abused JW wife--for over 25 years. As was mentioned by others, it mattered not whether I was ill, exhausted, in late pregnancy, having menstrual cramps, a yeast infection, or any other 'excuse'. My husband had an insatiable sex drive, and since 'rendering him his due' was my scriptural obligation, I was at his mercy. I have to say that my husband is not an evil man, just a weak and selfish one, but backed by the authority of 'Jehovah', he became abusive to me in this way.
Eventually, I left the JWs (about five years ago), and I finally managed to get enough spine to insist that the sexual manipulations stop (his tool of choice was emotional blackmail, and I was a person who withered under disapproval). We are still married, and we have to deal with the aftermath of this long and painful history.
For me, the result is living as a virtual sexual cripple; my sexuality has been ruined. I cannot imagine having feelings for him in that way ever again, and I can barely stand for him to touch me, even casually. For him it is knowing this distance between us is largely of his own making. We are doing the best we can, and there are other things in the marriage that do make the effort tolerable. Part of that is seeing his genuine regret over what he did to me and his acceptance of the consequences.

I read this board much more than I post, but this one made me want to respond. My first name has given me a life time of grief. Now, I am deep in middle age, and am trying to reconcile my attitude toward it. My first name is one which is typically given to people of the opposite gender that I happen to be. It also has resonance with a prominent historical figure. So, I got lots of teasing as a child in school. After a few years I began to use my middle name, which is gender appropriate and innocuous.
Still, to this day, when legal names are required, or when I must show official ID, I get the quizzical looks and I want to scream. The funny thing is that the screen name I chose for this site is also of the opposite gender. Although I chose it for its connection to a fictional character with whom I identified, I need to do some thinking on that.
