What brought you here?
by leaving_quietly infolks here all have one thing in common: they are somehow associated with jws, either were one, are married to one, have a relative who is one, has a romantic interest in one, are are currently one.
perhaps you are not one, but something about jws bugs you enough to have found this forum, and read it and contribute to it.
what brought you here?

1) I had supressed too many things for so long because I felt like I needed to "wait on Jehovah". My dad (who taught me "the truth" disassociated himself and put those seeds of doubt in my head. He told me that the day would come when the society would have to change the 1914 generation definition and that it was a house of dominos for them. After he died, his words came true which gave me my first aha moment.
2) Jesus said you would know his people by the love, I only saw unconditional love. The elders were more like the scribes and pharisees instead of loving shepherds.
3) Got disgusted with the number of pedophile issues and the victims being threatened with disfellowshipping if they said anything.
4) The shunning of disfellowshipped ones (especially those trying to come back) seemed barbaric.
5) The nail on the coffin for me was the UN issue.
6) More and more I felt like the governing body was edging Jesus out of the picture and placing obedience to them over Jehovah and Jesus.
I, too, innocently was looking for the JW website and stumbled upon a website talking about reform for the organization. I hesitantly looked at it not knowing if it was "apostate" or not and was relieved that I wasn't the only one that felt like there was something seriously wrong in the organization. It had a chapter of Ray Franz' forbidden book linked to it and I read it. Found myself ordering the book the next day and read it along with his other book and realized that the organization isn't/wasn't what I thought it was.
There were about a hundred other little things but these were the big ones.
Stick around, you will learn a lot on this board. Most posters are great people, not the evil apostates we've been warned about.
edited to add: elderelite hit it spot on...couldn't have said it better because I think ultimately we all start listening to the little voice inside of us.

I live in an apartment community and several of us like to hang out at the pool and cook out. This girl that I've known for a couple of months was talking with my husband and me the other day about sex and marriage. She's going through a divorce and said that she doesn't believe in pre-marital sex. My husband asked her if it was a religious thing and she said yes but didn't want to say which religion cause she didn't want to give it a bad name. She was smoking and a little wasted at the time. I said "it doesn't start with JW by chance" and her mouth dropped open and asked how we knew.
She now thinks of me as her new BFF cause I understand what she's going through. She still believes it's the truth even tho she knows it's f**ked up. She has 3 kids that are strong witnesses and 1 that's not in anymore so wants to get reinstated to maintain the relationshipwith them, plus her mom, also a JW, is going through cancer for the 3rd time. Been married twice (both to JW's), the first one was an alcoholic and the the 2nd one is gay, but hasn't admitted it to himself yet. She suffers from tremendous guilt and asked me how I got over always feeling guilty. I told her that I stopped believing it was the truth and it was easy after that.

I just finished reading the book, "Wheat Belly" by a Dr. William Davis. Very enlightening. He talks about diabetes in the book.
Basically, the food industry has corrupted the wheat grains and it is actually harmful to us even though we are encouraged to eat "whole grains". Food manufacturers add wheat flour to things you would never suspect because it stimulates appetite as well as raise our insulin levels.

I actually loved field service
by gubberningbody inthat might seem odd, but it really suited my personality.
even before i became a jw i was annoying people with personal questions.
the thing is that it's sort of ok in normal land to do that as a cult member, but not as a "normal citizen".. .

I don't think I ever enjoyed it, not one minute. I enjoyed getting home and hoping that Armaggedon would come that day because I had actually done something that I was suppose to. I enjoyed feeling that I was pleasing Jehovah by going out in service but I HATED knocking on doors.

Welcome to the board. Great advice already given. If I may add a suggestion, while you are fading I would spend extra quality time with your wife. If there is something that you both enjoy that would help you to be around non-JW's, try to get her involved in that. The more non-witness friends you have (as a couple) the easier it is to fade. Most JW's stay with it because of the social aspect, especially if you were raised in it.
There is also some great threads on getting your family out. One brother did it by means of the family study and asking questions. This would be a great opportunity for you to have a family study with your wife since you are "spirtually weak".
Good luck.

My son was murdered today
by truman ini have been on this site daily, almost from its beginning, since i left the jws in 2001, but i have been more of a reader than a poster, as you can see from my post count.
i know few here know me, although i know many of you through reading your posts.
maybe it is not right to ask for support, when i generally stay quietly in the background of this forum, but i want only to speak a human misery of the deepest kind.
