having a meal with your grown, disfellowshipped child seems to me necessary part of having raised a decent, family-values sort of child.

it is as if when someone is born, from a baby, to a child, teen, adult; that one has a responsiblity to celebrate christmas (and i thought it was a free country); and others have a responsiblity to celebrate others' anniversary of one's birth.. i don't get the criticisms as if celebrating either is a great thing and the not celebrating is a bad thing.. data on star trek said that he does not understand why people celebrate their birthdays - a day one can not possibly remember.. what are you actually celebrating?

What are you actually celebrating? The fact that you made it another year? Sure with all of the shooting and drunk driving and other deaths, surving another years is an accomplishment, but not an activity one would celebrate. Anniversaries are celebrated because half end up in divorce.

What does Conti and her abuse have to do with the Watchtower?
My understanding is that the congregation and by extension the Watchtower, did not inform her or her parents of an sex offender was in the congregation and she is blaming that for the harm. Harm can occur wherever.
That does not make them liable anymore than Match.com is liable for screening people for background checks and telling members. There is this case of a woman suing Match.com over an assault.
One commenter on the ABCnews site said"Still don't see how this is match.com's fault. Meeting a stranger over the internet and bringing them in your house alone the second time you meet. Must be that Ivy league education. No common sense."
Another said "My bet is the lawyer is planning on making money. Bad things happen, and we spend our time trying to blame other good people, instead of the evil ones. "

by exwhyzee inmy sister in law has been shunned by the family since she da'd herself at the age of 18 and moved out of the house.
i always insisted that my wife keep in contact with her and made sure she knew she had a soft place to land,with us, should she need it.
even at the risk of it getting us in hot water with the pioneer,elder,bethelite family members there was no way we were going to let her disappear into the wild blue yonder on her own.

When people are critical of JWs, it should be something real that they are critical of.

Yes, the conventions are getting shorter.
The longest talks are 30 minutes. The public talk is 30 minutes and final talk too.
The symposium parts are 10 minutes or less. But now they have 8 parts in a symposium.
Everything is scripted, the demonstrations and manuscript talks.

I just went to the meeting tonight!

out of nowhere, the mrs. tells me that since she has a part tonight and there's nobody to watch the kids, she wants me to come with her to the meeting to watch them while she's on the platform.
i'm actually still supposed to be there, but i went home (5 minutes down the road) for a 'bathroom break'.

Many are like what is said about the Obama liberal supporters. Conservatives say people want Obama to provide for them and save them from their troubles.
Many JWs want the kingdom to come and provide and save them, rather than their fixing things themselves. That is why they say man can't rule themselves. It is just a lazy copout. My wife is like that is so many ways. I have to bite my tongue or we would fight so much over this.
People like the original poster described drive me crazy. The ones who volunteer for demonstrations and such. A big show.
I never underline my books or magazines. Messes them up. I don't care what people think about me. My wife told me that a brother that does sound and magazines asked her why I don't reach out more for priviliges. I wanted to say 'carrying a microphone and giving out magazines, is a privilige?' Really? Really?
