  the new world translation (nwt) contains thousands of serious errors.

  the following regarding john 1:1, one of the most noteworthy verses to jehovah's witness and ex-jehovah's witnesses alike, provides a case example of how and why the nwt cannot be trusted.

  there some few scholars that translate the word was "a god" or "a god" or "divine" but they are in the very low percentages.. in greek john 1:1 says: "en arche en ho logos, kai ho logos en pros ton theon, kai theos en ho logos.

  The point has been made about "etymology and the hyper-literal translation of words"...

  While I am not weighing in on this particular topic - I can say for sure that this is one of the main problems for any language teacher, particularly if the students are picky about exact word meanings. I think anyone with any linguistic/language teaching experience would know that this type of micro-analysis can easily go astray if one is not familiar with the language/context/culture.

  Did any of you ever have "overzealous"parents?

  this may have been discussed before but did any of you have crazy strict parents...i mean did they have even more strict ideas than what the religion already had put restrictions on?.

  my stepfather had been a crazy drug/alcohol addict before dragging my family into the "truth"...then it seemed he became obsessed with the religion.

  honestly...i don't know which was worse!

  Hi,

  I am Assie too - was an elder's daughter (still am - really). There is no easy answer. I got away with nothing. I eventually left my elder husband and left the organization ( although that is not official in any way). I married and "unbeliever", which was the best thing I ever did. My parents are real hard-liners, so nothing is going to change. Your parents may be different. Every journey is different, so the best thing is to be true to yourself. One suggestion - don't just throw out everything your parents told you; some of it may be good. I disagree with what my parents believe due to being in the organization for so long, but their basic principles are ethical and have been useful for me.

  The speaker should really have read - for example - The Aquariums of Pyongyang (Kang Chol-Hwan) before making sweeping statements related to community responsibility in North Korea. It's one thing to make a general assessment from the relative safety of a democratic country, but another thing altogether to bring about change from within such a regime (which it seems he is suggesting). His lack of world knowledge is obvious from the conclusions he has drawn.
