  'necessary family business'...just what is it?

  (prompted in part by the post on the latest wt reinforcing shunning).. say a child has occasional, not regular, contact with a d/f parent.

  the child later gets married, is inviting the parent seen as ''necessary family business''?.

  if a wedding is not, then what is?.

  In my case it involves the following:

  Not being able to take the role of the Enduring Power of Attorney for the remaining parent (this role was taken over by the elders), and therefore:

  Not being informed as to any health/medical issues including the outcome of medical checks.

  Not being informed about housing issues - ie selling the family property to move into an aged home.

  Not being informed about any/all financial matters - ie investments etc.

  and any other normal communication such as what to do with the deceased person's ashes.

  All of the above (and more) are now controlled by the elders who took control of matters but who, upon investigation by government officials said they were happy to 'converse' with me as to the best way to take care of the aged person. That was until I stipulated a meeting with all of the elders involved (including one from Bethel) and to have complete transparency of all legal/medical domumentation and a statutory declaration saying that all such documentation was accurate and complete. The elders now say a meeting is not 'worthwhile' - and so the investigation continues. It is interesting how little the 'good name of Jehovah' matters in such situations. Non association with 'unassociating members' (not d/f or d/a) is nothing but a crude form of control in order for the organisation to manipulate people's lives to their own best intersts.

  I remember an older brother with a very spotty history (was sent home from Gilead for - I believe - cheating, but who knows..) who was privately reprimanded by the congregation and lost his position of MS due to interfering with a particular young brother. He studied with a number of kids - mainly teenage boys. It became somewhat common knowledge but at the same time was hushed over and he and his wife continued to play an active part in the congregation. I remember him blaming his behaviour on the fact that he went to a Catholic boarding school. Everyone seemed to agree it was the Catholics that did it. I also seem to remember that this was not his first offense. The young boy in the middle of this mess didn't fare well at all - married young and it all went very bad. Anyone who wasn't aware of this situation would never know and their children obviously would have been at risk.

  In the same area was another pervert who raped his niece (a friend of mine). This was well known and his deviance became a standing joke - he needed to be watched carefully. In later years his daughter-in-law said she would not let him near her kids. My friend eventually made a start at taking him to the authorities but didn't follow through because he said he would kill himself. At the time she had moved congregations and the elders from her new congregation were prepared to support her, but the original group of elders said if she was still in their congregation they would disfellowship her. Interestingly, she made two attempts to get some sort of recognition from the congregation about this man's behaviour - the first time it involved an elder who later became a DO, and he was part of a group that got her to let it go. She told me they knew he used to undress her grandmother. He is still part of the congregation.

  Thanks for positng that. Soooo many years ago and I had forgotten the title but looking at it now, it's like yeaterday.

  Sadly, at the time I really liked it - after that alwful movie of life at Bethel that showed how well brothers fold sheets - I thought this was very progressive - how things change.

  I have heard of some elders being "appointed" as the one to look after "orphans and widows" etc. I would assume this is work relevant to 'pastoral care' by other church ministers. Not sure about having a brother/sister come to the house for a bible study though - guess this could be termed a private arrangement. From my knowledge, this is where a lot of the trouble happened/s. Perhaps this is in some way connected to the book study being discontinued - just a guess.

  jwfacts: I remember hearing about the scripture classes but not taking any real notice at the time. Did they give any reason (other than the truth) as to why they stopped doing this? I seem to remember asking, but didn't get that answer.

  CO was asking for money in his talk last night

  ok i listened in on the phone last night to the co's talk after the book study.

  i am truly starting to realize that otwo is right and it is just making me more depressed and mad.

  but my husband still goes and it is helpful to be able to bring things up with him.. so i was half listening when he starts to go on about where the money goes that we put into the world wide work box at the back of the hall.. i started to tune in more and he was going on and on about how the ones in the full time service do not have any money and how what we give is what keeps them going and how we need to give.

  Well, my parents didn't leave me any money in their will because I'm no longer a JW - so guess it cuts both ways.

  And - in a missionary assignement we had to pay rent to the society for a small 'bush-material' house that was built, paid for and donated by the previous pioneers....no help there!

  Group control as a biproduct of creating an imaginary villain

  i have noticed, as many of us on this board have, that the watchtower's tone is getting harsher.. my friend and i have a love of the part of psychology that studies group think.

  we noticed something peculiar about how the watchtower seems to approach control of the members.. they seem to subliminally build a villain.

  a person that the group is not to be like.. what is happening is not an adjustment of the acceptable part of the group but a refining of the qualities of this villain.. what then naturally happens in the group is an aversion from whatever activities or persons that may be similar to the villain.. in other words, the accepted members' activities will be diametrically apposed to what ever this imaginary villain does.

  Governments (or dictators) work in the same way. For example - the regime in North Korea needs a common enemy to remain in control.

  Whenever threats rise form inside the ranks Mr Kim fires something... Many regimes work similarly (and not all are dictators).

  For those that are and have been married,did the JW lifestyle aggravate "typical" marital and family problems?

  i ask this in consideration of last week's and this week's congregation bible study which focuses on the responsibilities of christian parents, and husbands.

  Either we were married to the same man or there are more that behave in the same way. The instances are too numerous to write about.

  I remember 'the elder/husband' telling me he couldn't take a child to the doors as he wouldn't be able to talk to the householder - so I took all three. It was difficult with two in a pram and one toddler, but I'd get into trouble because elder so-and-so said the kids weren't an example

  When they became teenagers it became intollerable. 'We' were the reason he wasn't re appointed as an elder in a new congregation - he didn't have 'freedom of speech' because his kids weren't perfect - actually they were doing nothing wrong at all. Around this time when my daughter was only 14 she visited a deaf sister, who had cancer, every day in hospital - even the day she died.

  The husband was just such a needy/greedy person for recognition I guess some of the elders couldn't help using 'position' as a stick and a carrot - power game. In the years after leaving, my son used to joke about Bloody Sunday - we all dreaded Sundays.

  He made it to elder again after the kids and I left. I only contacted him once after that to tell him that his son was seriously ill in hospital. He never bothered to call and my son died - not sure how he deals with that, but he's still an elder...guess he has 'freedom of speech' - if they're still buzz-words.

  New World Translation into other languages; anyone knows of any critics?

  perhaps this is the wrong place to post such a question, but, is anyone aware of any criticism of the new world translation as rendered into other languages, say, spanish, portuguese, french?.

  if you open a non-english version of the nwt, you find that they very clearly say you're holding a translation from english into whatever the target language is, only "checking against the hebrew and greek originals".

  this is to say, there is a pecking order that begins with the translation from the original languages into english, and then another, from english into all others.

  I was raised in 'the truth' so my whole life revolved around it. My kids and I put up with a LOT of nonsense/nastiness/ignorance when I separated from my elder husband - but I hung in there. I have lived and worked in Asian countries noted for corruption and even though I didn't like it and often felt uncomfortable in dealing with stuff their way, I adjusted my thinking in order to live there - it is their system after all. But why should I adjust my thinking towards an organisation that claims to be chosen by God and his representative here on earth? Isn't the responsibility to be honest/ethical theirs?
