What do Baptists believe?
by quellycatface ini'm thinking about going to church again because i'm really interested in god (today)!!.
sometimes i'm so confused and feel like there is no god, other days i do and want to try and get to know him.. i guess i'm scared because of all the bs that went on in the kh.. there is a local baptist church near me that seems nice.
i'm in the uk.

JWism and their curious doctrine of salvation
by Laika inin christian theology there is often a lot of talk about whether we are saved by faith or works, and what exactly those things mean.
this thread is not exactly about that, instead it's about how jws, in their inimitable style, somehow managed to create a doctrine that mixes the worst of both and caused me no end of internal conflict as a jw.. in jw doctrine, life is about an argument between jehovah and satan.
satan said that nobody follows jehovah out of love, but only for what they can personally get out of it.

The way I understand it is sort of this analogy. In a courtroom, the JW's are committing acts of faith so that they may receive a positive verdict. Believers in mainstream churches commit acts of faith because they already received a positive verdict.

Undeclared changes to the 2013 NWT
by Doug Mason inin the following from the 2013 edition of the nwt, the watchtower society indicates that when it released its initial 1950 edition, it considered the greek text provided by westcott and hort as its master text.
as a result of these additional masters, the wts made some undeclared changes to the 2013 nwt.
it does not list these changes or give any explanations.. greek text: in the late 19th century, scholars b. f. westcott and f.j.a.

As I remarked in my analysis on visiting the KH for the first time, "taking in accurate knowledge" and "knowing" are very much different when applied to the practice of JWs vs Christendom. Just like taking in accurate knowledge of the president and knowing the president are widely different.

70 weeks prophercy
by KSFernando inaccording to the daniel's 70 weeks propercy, it ibegins from the going forth of the word to restore and to rebuild jerusalem.
as per the bible writer nehemiah, the word went forth to rebuild the walls around jerusalem iin the month of nisan,* in the 20th year of artaxerxes the king.nehemiah 2:1.. therefore the propercy begins in the month of nisan (march/april).
propercy begin .

I saw that too. Curious as to why it was determined that way.

This is from Josh McDowell's book The New Evidence that Demands a Verdict pp. 199-200.
"The decree [of Artaxerxes to Nehemiah] was given in 444 B.C. based on the following: 1) 'In the month Nisan, in the twentieth year of King Artaxerxes' (Neh. 2:1); 2) Artaxerxes ' accession was in 465 B.C.; 3) There is no date specified, so according to the Jewish custom the date is understood as the first day of the month, which would be Nisan 1, 444 B.C.; 4) March 5, 444 B.C. is our corresponding calendar date."
It then quotes from a calculation made by Harold Hoehner in Chronological Aspects of the Life of Christ p. 138
"Multiplying the sixty-nine weeks by seven years for each week by 360 days gives a total of 173,880 days. The difference betweetn 444 B.C. and A.D. 33 then is 476 solar years. By multiplying 476 by 365.24219879 or by 365 days, 5 hours, 48 minutes, 45.975 seconds [there are 365 1/4 days in a year], one comes to 173,855 days, 6 hours, 52 minutes, 44 seconds or 173,855 days. This leaves only 25 days to be accounted for between 444 B.C. and A.D. 33. By adding the 25 days to March 5 (of 444 B.C.), one comes to March 30 (or A.D. 33) which was Nisan 10 in A.D. 33. This is the triumphal entry of Jesus into Jerusalem."
Of course I have my own questions about this, but it is an interesting take.

John 14:14
by InChristAlone injohn 14:14, in most translations, says something to the effect of, "if you ask me anything in my name, i will do it.
" (my emphasis on "me") the kjv (and relative translations) and the nwt do not have "me" in it.
most of the translations that keep the word were based on the westcott and hort which has the greek "me", however the kjv doesn't because it was based on the textus receptus which does not have the greek "me".

I am under the impression JW do not celebrate NYE, is that correct?
by nonjwspouse inmy husband on his own went out and got fireworks for our daughter and her friend to set off tonight.
he did this with no prompting at all from me.
in fact, i get nervious around fireworks, so i grimiced a bit when he told me.. but, wow, again, if this is another step showing he is not allowing himself under the complete spell of the wt.

How do you not acknowledge something that just is? You can't ignore the fact that it is the last day of the year. You would think they would celebrate the New Year as another year closer to Armageddon.

My question is, if the NWT was based on the Westcott and Hort (as so proudly proclaimed in Colwell's rankings), why would it leave out the word "me" to be like the KJV (as so proudly condemned in Colwell's rankings)?

Glaring Mistake In RNWT And Todays WT
by piztjw intodays' wt had this sentence in one of the paragraphs....we know this because each of their individual names are indelibly written upon the 12 foundation stones of the heavenly new jerusalem.rev.
21:14.. the cross reference lists judas iscariot as one of the twelve.
so with one breath they have said judas was cursed as jesus betrayer, and yet in their rnwt they still cross reference him in the list of the twelve named foundation stones of nj.

On jw.org in Revelation 21:14 cross-references for Matthew 10:2-4; Luke 6:13-16; and Acts 1:13. All of them mention Judas. Is this what you are talking about?

Bible Reading Rev 7--umm hello?
by DS211 ini got bored at the meeting and read the bible reading and could not believe some of the false prophetic garbage being commented....anyways heres what i fiund interesting ;-).
7 after this i saw four angels standing on the four corners of the earth, holding tight the four winds of the earth, so that no wind could blow on the earth or on the sea or on any tree.
2 and i saw another angel ascending from the sunrise, having a seal of the living god; and he called with a loud voice to the four angels to whom it was granted to harm the earth and the sea, 3 saying: do not harm the earth or the sea or the trees, until after we have sealed the slaves of our god in their foreheads.
