I find it interesting that so many consider "Black Hawk Down" as anit-war. While I found it disturbing and most un-lifting, I don't think that the producers meant it to be anti-war. Especially that scene at the end where they jog into safe territory whipped but yet still standing and defiant almost in their attitude. If it was meant to be anti-war I missed it completely.

Whats the best anti-war film?
by sleepy in.
just watched the "thin red line" last night, a very artisticaly shot film with great music, that shows the mental aguish suffered by soldiers in war.the contrast between the peace and beaty of the island and its people and the war being fought makes you wonder what war is all about.. it makes me wish that people would sit down and think about what they are actually doing when they talk of sending people to kill for their country..

"New Things Learned"
by RubaDub inthere always used to be a part when the co visited called "new things learned" in which we would get a list of things to study prior to the meeting.
to me, the "new things" always seemed to be such basic things like showing love, being respectful, etc.
if this information was so "new," i always thought that someone had been doing a very lousy job teaching.

We always called it "Old Things Forgotten".
But I guess it could be "Things Changed and Re-learned"

We musn't forget The Deer Hunter
Ah, yes. I saw that again just last week. That scene where they escape the torture is so intense.
Johnny Got His Gun is an interesting movie. That one ranks up there, I'd have to say.

I always considered Platoon an anit-war movie. These guys didn't give a ---- about right or wrong or the politics. They were just trying to survive. And some turned into murderers. I think everybody(especially politicians) need to watch this movie before ever thinking of military action against another country. It might make people think a little more before having a knee jerk reaction militarily.
M*A*S*H was a comedy anti-war movie. You laughed but then you were brought back to earth by the casualties suffered.

Challenge to Family Members
by Carmel ini am suspect that my family (brothers) may very well be lurking here.
perhaps they will come on and answer why they felt it necessary to support the elders who insisted my brother, who had just come out of an iron lung and was instructed by his doctor not to go to public gatherings attend an assembly?
he became immediately ill due to having virtually no active immune system and died within two days only because the elders insisted the family bring him to the assembly regardless of the medical advice.. so fair family of mine, what say you?

First of all, my condolences on your loss. This must be very hard, to lose a brother.
I'm going to play devil's advocate here, and I don't want to play lightly with anyone's feelings; but if the doctor advised against public gatherings, was there anyone who tried to reason with the deceased NOT to go to the assembly? True, other family may have backed up any elders that encouraged him to go to the assembly, but who's final decision was it? No one forced anyone to do anything. True, the elders may have erred in their judgement to encourage attendance and are definately ignorant, but the final decision was your brother's. If he was forced to go, then that changes my viewpoint.
I bring that up because some have over-reacted with their ideas of law suits. I am not trying to absovle the elders of anything either. Too many times they do speak without knowing of all the facts or having a grip on the situation. But I don't think they can be held responsible if someone made a conscience decision to not follow doctor's orders.
Again my condolences.

do beer commercials cross the line?
by DanTheMan ini was hoping to enjoy the championship game between the eagles and the bucs.. but no more than 5 or 10 minutes into the game, a budweiser ad comes on that uses a very obvious double entendre (a conversation between a man and woman that revolves around the very large sweatshirt she is wearing.
she makes comments like, "small ones are ok, but big ones just feel better.
" the commercial closes with her remarking about his "small hands".).

Hi Dan,
I couldn't help but be amused by the fact that though you are offended by the lowering of standards in television you have as your avatar a picture of Boss Hogg from the Dukes of Hazzard(or at least the actor who played him and is remembered as). Speaking of lowering of standards.

So if a JW was to join, say, the YMCA for use of the gym without ever getting involved with interfaith, is he still in violation of some WTS policy? Let's say he had been a member for at least 10 years, taking full advantage of the Y's gym. If the elders or anyone else brought it to his attention could he then easily dispense with the matter by saying, " I was unaware of any interfaith movement involved but since this has been brought to my attention, I will disassociate myself from this organization". Of course he hasn't apologized for his action or even shown regret. Would everything be hunky-dory at this point or would there still be some judicial action? I think you know where I'm going with this.

I was the accountant servant and I got conselled for being too neat. In other words, my numbers were too neat.
That's just it. Nuthin you do is good enough. Somebody somewhere is gonna nitpick the hell out of it. Hair's too long. Hair's too short. You write sloppy. You write too neat. You should buy a four door car. Why do you need such a big SUV? RocknRoll is bad. Classical is bad.
Good god, it's no wonder people are having emotional issues inside the Org.

That's priceless. I don't think I could have kept a straight face on that one.
I guess I was lucky. I got counseled on grooming a couple of times and cars once, but they were nice about it. I always managed to mind my own business and not let too many people into my own little inner circle. I guess that kept me out of the spot light.
I remember being counseled on one thing(can't go into detail but it was really stupid) because a nosy sister in the cong. didn't like sumthin I was doing. The elders couldn't find anything written but asked if I would just lay low in this matter. I said sure and they let me go. As I came out of the back room, the sister was chatting with others(this was after a meeting) and she was watching me like a hawk and I could tell that she knew what was going on. I watched her closer from then on and could tell she was just looking for things that anyone did that might seem out of place so she could go running to the elders.
