  Every generation has it's own music that it grew up with. Bad or good, it brings back memories of being in high school or your first love, etc. The older you get the more you miss what music means to you. When you hear an old fav on the radio, you zone back to your youth. New music will not do that for us older(ugh, I hate that word) ones. We may like new music, buy it, download it, dance to it but it will not remind us of when we were young. You youngsters will figure that out when someone starts to make fun of the music of the 90s and 00s.

  I split my time between my old favs and listening to new music. There is a lot of good stuff out there. The trouble now is you have to look for it. You won't find it on the radio. But no matter how good it is, it will not have the effect that the music I grew up with has.

  BIG DEAL EXPERIENCES

  i can't get over the the lack of depth that exists in the world of jw experiences.

  years ago, the typical experience was how a person spoke the "truth" to one person and the result was that 10 bible studies were started and 7 got baptized in less than 6 months.

  notice the experience from the czech republic that i will abbreviate from the 8-1-03 wt......2 witnesses talked to a lady through a closed door.

  The sister prayed to Jehovah for help to reach this woman. This time she asked the woman friendly questions such as "How are you? How did you enjoy the magazines?" At first, there weas no response but after a few more visits, the lady began to warm up. One time she opened the door wide, but the conversation was brief. Since the woman was reluctant to talk to the Witness at the door, the pioneer wrote her a letter to explain the purposes of the visit and to offer a Bible study. Finally, after a year and a half of patient effort,a Bible study was started. "She was surprised and encouraged when the woman later told her:"I have believed in God since the time you started to bring me the magazines."........................

  A year and a half to just get her to open the door. The Lord truly does work in mysterious ways. Let's all sing psalms and praises to the Lord. God be praised.

  he knows that i have basically quit.

  i tried to explain how i came to see that they weren't the "true religion" but it was hard to do without telling him about what the jws believe.

  A nonJW friend asked me about my past with the JWs today. He knows that I have basically quit. I tried to explain how I came to see that they weren't the "true religion" but it was hard to do without telling him about what the JWs believe. I sure didn't want to get into that. I told him how they expected the generation of 1914 to not die and before I could explain that they changed what "generation" meant he said, "Aren't they already dead?" I agreed with him and said that the JWs use the scripture about the light getting brighter and how that means new teachings or doctrine changes are "new light" and he said, "That's just a cop out". He asked how the date 1914 was attained. I won't even go into that suffice it to say he figured out it's a crock of $#!*. He asked about the hours spent knocking on doors to people converted ratio. He couldn't grasp the idea of using door to door work if it was not successful. I tried to explain the control aspect of it. He asked about how much money the religion has and what they did with it. I told him millions but I had no idea where it went.

  It was interesting to see a completely free thinking person's reaction to these beliefs and practices. We were on the same wavelength about the WTS being a money-making machine, but it took me most of my life to realize I was being duped and he saw through it immediately. Mind control is a very real thing.

  OK, I'm not much into stocks and how they work, so I'll play devil's advocate and ask this:

  Is it possible that since this person(sister?) donated this to the WTS, that the WTS doesn't really know what they are holding? Is it possible that they accepted the investment donation and didn't bother to look at how it was set up? I guess they should if they are concerned about some companies being immoral and all but could it happen that way?

  As brought out already, I'd be careful about what info you post here. Not that we don't want to know, but if you are trying to avoid DFing or DAing, you don't want to give them any leverage against you. If you don't want to get DFd or DAd, it would be best to go to the meeting, but deny the accusations. Your word against one other person. Then slowly fade away.

  If you don't care one way or the other what they do, then by all means, don't show up. Don't play their games anymore. But be prepared to find out later that you DAd yourself from the congregation.

  Good luck in whatever you decide to do.

  seat belt laws !!!!!!! argh!!!!

  just wondering how many people here feel that the seat belt law is mandatory for safe motoring.

  i can't stand this law myself as if you only forget to put one on the police are happy to pull you over and detain you and write you a ticket.

  this is one of those things that i think if there were a public vote over, it would not exist .

  If they're worried about safety, why not a roll cage and 6 point racing harness in all cars? Why not ban motorcycles?

  I believe in choice when it comes to seat belts and in particular, helmets. For being a "free country", we sure don't have a choice in a lot of things.

  All this does is give Harry Potter more media coverage and make J.K. Rowling richer(not that she isn't already). When are people(fundies, mostly) going to learn to just shut up and ignore that what they don't like.

  Marilyn Manson played locally on a Christian holiday in my town a few years back and the Christian groups went nuts. The concert sold out despite(or because of) the picketing and media coverage. I'm sure MM laughed all the way to the bank. Here's a guy(?) who is nominally talented, uses shock value to get coverage and attention and sells out because people try to ban him. If people ignored him, then he probably would have faded into obscurity.

  Harry Potter is a phenomonem without the controversy, so trying to ban him is an attempt in futility. Potter, like all fads, will fade out in time. Ride it out, warn your children about the dangers of black magic(if you're that worried about it) and ignore the hype.

  Do JW wedding vows provide a "way out"?

  as many of you know, i just got married for a second time about two weeks ago.

  i noticed a sharp distinction in the marriage vows as read to us by a justice of the peace when compared to the vows written by the wt society for jw weddings.. the traditional vow, as read by the jop, included the phrase "i take (insert name), (insert good and bad circumstances), until death do us part".. the jw vow says something to this effect: "i take (insert name), (insert other stuff), as long as we both shall live together under (or "according to") god's marital arrangement.".

  the traditional vow sounds quite permanent to me.

  Presently (post Fred Franz) they hold that marriage and procreation will cease when the earth is full.

  I must have slept through a lot more meetings than I thought. I don't remember ever hearing that. Where is that written? How do they prove this through the Bible?

  Car park charges still operate in the U.K.

  I have just been to an assembly (to take the wife) and there were over 2000 cars parked there at a cost of £9.00 ($15) for all three days. Single days not accepted.

  I find it interesting that the WTS sends out a letter in the US stating that to simplify, the parking pass program will be dropped. This after the scandal out west(Tacoma?). But in the UK such simplification has yet to be instituted.

  Scene at the WTS:

  "Well, they're on to us on the parking scam. I guess we'll have to drop it."

  "Ya know, nobody has caught on to it in the UK. We could keep doing it there and just drop it here and call it "simplification". It's worked before."

  "Good idea. Let's do it. Now, how can we fix the books to show a deficit after two days so the fools, er, I mean, friends will give more?"
