Do you have to be part of organized religion?

ok. this is my first thread and i am very interested to see the kinds of responses i get.

my question to you all is do you beleive you have to be a member of some type of organized religion in order to have god's approval?

i was raised in jw household, never baptized.

Hi Tru,

Very interesting thoughts indeed. I agree with Lilacs comment on organized religion. How do we know that the scripture about getting out of her, Babylon the Great, might not apply to ALL org. religions. The JWs since their beginning have always referred to OTHER religions as part of Babylon the Great, NEVER themeselves. But, again, even the JWs were started by a man! So, it may very well apply to JWs as well.

As far as you're mother is concerned, I think it is terrible that the JWs started fading away as she attended less and less meetings. How cold can people be?? I think it is just more of the " punishment " thing, if you don't attend enough meetings, people start shunning you in a sense. JWs seem to think that if you don't attend enough meetings that they have a God given right to punish you for it, by leaving you out of gatherings, not calling to see how you are, etc. just bascially ignoring you. I know, I am inactive and I am really getting it from different ones. Real nice isn't it!

I can sure remember a Judicial Committee I had to go before when I was about 16, one of the Elders asked me who unbuttoned who's shirt first. He was asking me all these ridiculously detailed questions like he was getting off on it or something. Finally, one of the older Elders with some sense told him that those questions were all unnecessary as they were all married men and knew full well how things worked. Sometimes I think there are Elders out there that enjoy hearing this stuff!

i just finished a holiday week-end with old friends in the organization.

all they knew when they came was that i had recently resigned as a elder.

Again, I enjoyed your post. You really have been a JW for a long time. It's funny, I go through different emotions each day. At times I think I should just go back to meetings and just concentrate on the good aspects of it, and my friends. But then, I start feeling like I am not being true to myself, it's such a rollercoaster ride. The JWs do have alot of good points, good advice on living, etc. There are times I look at them and think it must be the truth because they are different than alot of people in the " world " . Sometimes, I do feel the love of friends there. But I am so confused. I don't want to make a life altering decision that will be a big mistake if it is the "truth". I don't want God to look down on me at armageddon and be angry with me for not serving Him the way He wanted me to.

I know I sound like I am rambling on, But I really am scared. I wish I knew for sure.

Thanks for the reply. Nice to meet you. Would like to chat with you more. As I mentioned above, my big fear is hurting my family. Just being inactive as I have been, has caused a few problems, left out of things, etc. Just2, I know you mentioned above you have had doubts, but are you planning on exiting the organization?

You seem very encouraging. People seem to think if you are not in the "truth" you will lead a life of debauchery, so to speak. I believe very strongly in the bible and plan to abide by God's laws. Why is that not good enough to JWs?

I have seen it mentioned in other posts that those who leave the JWs just don't want to be told what to do or how to live their lives, or they have committed serious wrongdoing and just don't want to take responsibility for their actions. I am sure those are factors for some people. But not everyone. What if you are just fed up with all the politics and B.S. that goes on? It seems anymore, as I have mentioned, that the meaning of being a true Christian is lost with alot of JWs. Sure, none of us are perfect, but we can try anyway.

JW's- Have they lost their ability to think?

i seriously ask this question in light of some ridiculous experiences i have had in recent times.

a while back,a freind of mine purchased a new home.

a housewarming party was planned for her.

Interesting points, I have noticed though different trends in different congregations. Some congs. dress differently, some drink more than others, it seems depending on where you are, you can get away with different things. Sure, no matter where you are, adultery, fornication etc. are major no no's. But I live in a very small town, about 1000 people, and we have a cong. of about 65. It seems here you can't do much of anything without someone knowing or " reporting " something.

A young brother here was walking downtown with his cap on backwards and the one elder had to make an issue out of it at a meeting. It seems where I live, people are VERY judgemental. Everything is wrong according to certain people. We have had dances and I have done the music a couple of times. It is so discouraging to even plan anything anymore because you have to be so careful. Someone is always offended about something and has to make an issue out of it. It's just things like this that go on here.

I think being so isolated where we are, some of the elders think that they can form their own opinions and have everyoone abide by them. Kind of like living up to THEIR own personal standards.

It's all about who's who anymore. Not who you really are.

Interesting post. How long were you a JW? just curious. I can imagine how upsetting the prospect of having family cut you off must be. That is my biggest fear-losing contact with my family. It makes me sick to my stomach just thinking about it. I have often wondered if many people in the org. stay in because of that fear. It seems so wrong, that there is no graceful way out. It's like once you're in, that's it. But, I think I am guilty of hanging in because of family ties. I feel there really is no way out. It's kind of like being in prison.

I always was under the impression that it had to do with "keeping separate from the world" thing. I don't know for sure.

Dateline....Not this week.......

i was just sitting here thinking about the many times people have asked about the airing of the dateline segment.. well, just a thought.

we can move this post up to the top once a week until the show does finally air.

this way people will not ask all the time?.

just got done reading just a portion of the post from farkel on matthew 25 and the explanation of "doing good to the least of christs brothers".....read you knows and was repulsed at the haughtiness that this organization produces.. wow!

how could this wtbs be so grossly narrow-minded and misled as to showing plain love to all!!!!!???.

anyone that understands our lord knows the christian obligation to show love and hospitality to all including our enemies.. giving materially a drink, a meal, something to wear, a kind word, etc... is exactly what our lord meant in matthew 25!

I will say it again- the word Christian means being Christ like!
I sometimes think alot of JWs have lost this ability. Everything too twisted up in rules, regulations, positions etc.

Read the poem, " If Jesus was an Elder ", Mulan posted it. It's great!

Will really hit home.

ok. i read somewhere on this site something about those who don't know about jws fearing them so i thought,as someone who has always been 'worldly' i'd share what we really think of jws.. first of all we do not fear you, we fear your visits.

basically you're annoying!.

picture this; there you are happily going about your daily activities skipping joyeusly around your livingroom minding your own buisness and hark!, what's this?

I have posted opinions regarding door to door work recently. I have spent many hours in service and seen many reactions from those behind the doors. I was always careful when I felt that someone didn't want to speak to me, I quickly wrapped it up and left.

I have know so many witnesses that would almost put their foot in the door! We have to remember that as JWs, we look like the nutbars at the door. If someone came to my door preaching, I may be skeptical too. The JWs should be considerate. I have heard many in car groups that did not get a favorable response from the person at the door and the remarks I have heard bother me. They say things like"they don't want to hear the truth" or " they just don't have a love for God", things like that.

You can't expect people to just buy what you are saying that quickly!
