This reasoning reeks! I knew a sister a few years back that was single and had 2 kids. She wanted to get married in the worst way. Well, the local elders told her she had to have proof that her ex-husband was having sex with his girlfriend(she was wordly when she was divorced and later became a JW) Anyway, she had to make a 3 hour drive to where she used to live and have a "stakeout" of his house. She sat all day and all night watching his home. Well, she claims she saw a woman at his home all night. So, I guess they told her that was grounds enough, I don't know. I can't believe that they would put this poor woman through this. I personally think given the circumstances, why question it any further? It is so stupid, all these rules. Who comes up with this stuff anyway??
Thanks!

NEWS: I am publicly reproved over UN situation.
by badwillie inmy wife and i met with 3 elders for a "judicial hearing".. our crime: simply put, was talking.
i showed a friend the un website where the wts was listed as an ngo which then led to a 2 hour discussion of various doubts that we both have had.
my wife also showed a friend the un thing but also discussed with her a first hand account of a pedophile cover-up that we knew about in our former congregation.

Hey Badwillie,
Just curious, what was the Elders reaction to Society being on the UN list? Did they have any reasoning on that? Sorry to hear of your reproving, seems really unfair just for wondering about it. Let us know. Thanks!

Dogpatch and all others;
You have inspired me! You know, when I joined this forum in July, I was so afraid of posting on here I was almost shaking. I was terrified and guilt ridden. I was afraid that God was hating me at that very moment for questioning " His organization ". Slowly but surely, I am beginning to realize that maybe I am correct in how I feel. I do love God and what I feel He has in store for us. I do not believe God is as shallow as JWs make him out to be. It does make sense when yoy finally stop and think.....why would he care about some matters that in all reality are trivial. If God did not want us to be free moral agents, he would not have given us brains to think with. If we were all meant to be mindless drones, I guess we would have been created that way. And also, as people, we have to have society as we know it, a civiliazation. Centuries have passed and with new generations, our customs change. What meant something 500 years ago, no longer holds the same meaning now.
This is all so enlightening, It's kind of like a light has switched on. I am beginning to wonder where I have been all these years!
I want to thank everyone since I have joined for giving me so much new info and so many sensible and logical reasonings! Believe me, I still have a ways to go, but I think I am getting there! Keep posting all!!
Love, Vita

Hi Friends;
Just wondering about this subject of holidays again. I really miss Christmas but don't have enough nerve to celebrate it. I would be DFd for sure. I realize fully that this is not Jesus' birth, but I enjoy the holiday mainly for the beauty and warmth. I have researched thanksgiving and I can find nothing objectionable about it. There is no religious background to thanksgiving, definitely not pagan. It was just a day of thanks! Howcome the Society frowns upon this so bad? Must be because it is " part of the world ". Oh well, how does everyone feel about this? Looking forward to your comments.
Thanks again,
Vita

Friendly,Outgoing,Gossipy Elder's Wives.....,
by JonnieMae inhave you noticed that elder's wives are so friendly that they get a lot of information from the other sisters and go right to their husband (congregation overseer) with the info?
it's no wonder the elders seen to know so much.
do you seem to have a simular situation in your congregation?

How familiar this is. My father is an Elder. Several years ago my husband and I had a disagreement with my parents over something that they were SO SURE was scriptural. When my husband told my father he was dead wrong and to prove to him from the bible where he was right, his reply to my husband was, " well, If I was not right, I would be removed as an Elder" Then my mother pipes up and says" Yes, and I am an Elders wife, I have to make sure I am correct or my husband could be removed" something to that effect. True story. Anyway, my parents said that would have to " research " the subject. Well guess what? Never heard anything about it again.
So much for being humble servants.

A New Breed Of JW Emerging?
by Englishman inis there a new breed of jw emerging, i wonder?.
i know that there are lots of real brainwashed dubs around who see demons behind every car boot sale item and who scuttle off to the elders with every bit of tittle-tattle imaginable, but, i think that there is a new type of dub who quietly does just as he / she pleases.. this is what i think: many of the long-serving jw's who have seen the 1975 failure and the 1914 generation change are now approaching old age with something of a jaundiced eye, and are choosing to do their own thing in their remaining years.
in conversations i am picking up it seems that the elders are being regarded somewhat derisively by many jw's.

Hi friends,
Great post! The birthday thing really suprises me! I can't imagine the society changing their rules on that, but who knows, stranger things have happened. I was reading the "Knowledge" book the other night, and the reasoning it gave for not celebrating birthdays was that why should we honor imperfect humans for the day of their birth? It seemed very generalized, not a real concrete reason. And they figure since the only 2 experiences mentioned in the bible regarding birthdays are negative, then God must not want us to do it.
Even Christmas today no longer has any Pagan meaning. Sure, alot of our traditions were started by pagans and whomever, just because that was who was around then. Times have changed. Society has changed. I do think that what a poster above mentioned is so true, the JWs are different in some ways just for the sake of being different. There is no biblical reasoning for most holiday celebrations simply because they did not exist then! It's almost as if we are not allowed to have a society by JW standards. How did the rest of the world get by before JWs existed???And yes, wedding rings also have a pagan beginning. The society picks and chooses what is and what isn't.
In our cong. though, associating with disfellowshipped people is a big no-no. They have given many talks on it recently. But we have alot that are df'd in our hall. Also, our PO recently gave a talk on music, even naming particular groups that we should not be listening to. He named " Godsmack" "Incubus", etc. Said that if any in our cong. were known to posess these CDs that we would not be used for any privliges in the cong. About 8 years ago, my husband mother died after a long bout with emphysema. My husbands family is not JW. So, in December when Christmas rolled around, the family wanted us to get together with them, I think mainly for comfort( his mom died in November), so her death was still pretty new. Well, about 2 weeks later, early one saturday morning, here come the Elders knocking on our door, saying that someone told them we were celebrating christmas and it needed to be dealt with. Could not believe it. My husband said that seeing that his mother had just died, he did not see what was wrong with getting together with his family due to the circumstances.
It turns out that our neighbor who is a JW told the Elders that a friend that came to her house told her that we were celebrating Christmas, so she told the Elders. My point with all of this is that where I live, things don't seem to be changing much at all, even still. I live in a very small community, maybe that's why the elders are so strict in some ways. Everything is scrutinized here. You can't even wear your hair in certain ways, and I am not talking extremes either. The elders here will jump you for wearing baseball cap back wards!Well, you get the point. If they are changing, boy would that be great. I hope it happens here!
Thanks! Vita

The three reasons we leave the "Truth"
by sleepy inseems to me there are mainly three roads most of us have taken.
1.we did something "wrong" and were disfellowshipped and after felt able to look at the society in a different light.. 2.we didn't like the "truth" and were looking for a way out.. 3.we wanted it to be the truth but were overcome by the mountain of evidence against it.. which is the most common i wonder.. also do our motives play a large part in how we deal with information criticising the org.. without a reason to act information seems useless.. for instance if a person feels he has nothing to gain by leaving the org will he read different things into the same info as us?.
i think so and that all who leave must have a reason to do so, something to gain.. this does not make their reasoning wrong or prove they we are looking for just excuse.. but is a normal way in which humans deals with information.. two humans can have the same information but if they want or desire different things they may use the information differently.. maybe thats wht so many say "where else is there to go?

I haven't actually left at this point. I am inactive. I still have the "feeling" that JWs still have as close to the "truth" as I can find. I still have an uneasy feeling that I am being careless by not being a good JW. I started questioning things after many bizarre experiences with Elders who are supposed to be a "Hiding place" yeah, right. I think alot of people who have left the JWs probably started out having troubles of some kind with someone or committed some sort of wrong and did not like the treatment they recieved as a result. Then you start questiong everything for the first time. At least that has been my experience.
Being a true Christian is supposed to be about love and kindness toward others. But yet Jws whole life is going out in service to find potential believers. But, all the while alot of their own are not being taken care of. I have seen people who treat others in the cong. like Crap but yet they go out in service. My own parents who are JWs, father is an Elder, they do not even hardly give me the time of day, dad does not even hardly speak a word to me, because I am inactive. They have encouraged other family members to not associate to much with me because I am inactive, as it would not "look good". Yet, these " loving " people go out in service. They can't even show true love to their own daughter, using the scripture saying that " anyone who loves father or daughter or son more than the me is not with me" , something like that, I have read it. Really ridiculous I think. Like assoctating with me will be compromising their beliefs.Just a small tidbit of what has happened to me anyway. It's like true love is so far removed anymore from JWs. Self-righteousness and judging others permeates the whole thing. That is what it is all about. Not who you REALLY are, but how you LOOK. Put in high service hours, your in like flint and deemed " spiritually strong ". Attend alot of meetings and well, you must be OK. Nevermind the fact that you could be a complete idiot. Service and meetings are the Spiritual gage. Not by being a true person of heart.
That is what is starting to stick in my craw. My husband and I are clean living, moral honest people. Everyone loves my husband in the community, he has lived here all his life and is well liked by so many. But yet by Jw standards, we are not even worthy of being invited to a party or a bridal shower or even dinner at a fellow JWs home. No one from the cong. has much to do with us. Really sad way to live I think. Friends that I thought were friends, are no longer. And we are good standing with the cong. too. It just all gets to be too much for me to handle at times. How can you judge people in such a shallow way?? There are a few in our cong. right now that are nothing but trouble makers. Been in trouble continually. When there are invitations handed out to some sort of gathering, guess who will get invited?? Not me, but them, just BECAUSE THEY GO TO MEETINGS!
Pathetic.
Thanks for allowing me to vent this.
