Encouragement for the brothers came from many directions, even from the sea. Master Mariner John Smith, a captain of the White Star Line in 1912, would berth his ship and attend to company business as quickly as possible, devoting the remainder of his time to encouraging the brothers and delivering Bible lectures. Ecclesiae from Brisbane on the eastern seaboard to Perth in the west were united with their brothers throughout the country, as Smith carried news of the brothers’ activities from one to another.

Hi Amazing,
I went over to FindLaw.com to search the US Supreme Court records
for cases where "Joseph F. Rutherford" is mentioned as one of the lawyers. Here are the results:
SCHNEIDER v. NEW JERSEY, 308 U.S. 147 (1939), Distribution of leaflet
MINERSVILLE SCHOOL DIST. v. GOBITIS, 310 U.S. 586 (1940),Refusal to salute the flag
COX v. NEW HAMPSHIRE, 312 U.S. 569 (1941), Marches and leaflets
JONES v. CITY OF OPELIKA, 316 U.S. 584 (1942) License on book selling
I believe that in one of these cases, Rutherford made his oral argument before the court. I will continue to research this.
TR, quite a good quote isn't it? It came from the letter Walter
Salter wrote to "The Judge," the text of which is at:[ http://www.geocities.com/osarsif/salter.htm]

A co-worker of mine saw this movie.
He told me that he thought of me while watching the movie.
I don't know if that is a compliment or not.

Thank you Amazing for your answer to my question.
I have started a new thread about "Rutherford's legal Career"
There is still a question in my mind of how competent Rutherford
was as an attorney. I agree with you that he was not stupid, but
at the same time, he was capable of some very illogical reasoning,
as evidenced in some of his books (if indeed he actually wrote the
books, but that is another question)--VM44

Rutherford's Legal Career.
Rutherford took some courses in shorthand.
He worked as a clerk at a law firm.
He took an oral exam by several lawyers, and passed.
He became a member of the bar, and could practice law.He was selected to fill in for a judge for a few days
when the judge was out of town. This he deemed was
enough for him to accept the title of "Judge" for the
rest of his life.Rutherford became (supposedly) a member of the New York Bar.
When he became a Bible Student, he was in top circle of
people around Russell, but....When Russell sued a newspaper for libel over the "Miracle
Wheat" affair, Rutherford was not chosen to handle the case. After Russell died, and Rutherford wanted to kick out the directors
of the WTS, he consulted with some other attorney. When the flag issues resulted in court cases, Rutherford did not
handle the legal defense. Moyle and Covington were the top lawyers
used by the WTS in those cases.Rutherford presented an oral argument before the US Supreme Court
once, his argument being mainly theological in nature, and he left
unused some of the time allocated to him, in order to answer
questions from the judges, but he was disappointed when they did
not ask any question of him, and ignored the arguments he presented. So there you have it, Rutherford the lawyer, Rutherford the Judge,
Rutherford the "non"-trial lawyer, all summarized in one place. In Walter Salter's letter 1937 letter to Rutherford, he wrote,
"Two years ago last summer you made the statement to me and another
that you had bluffed all your life. I believe that was one of the truest
statements you ever made..."I concur.

Facial Hair & Bible Principles
by Francois inso we have been told that if you know your car has bad brakes and you take a group of people out in it and the brakes fail, causing an accident in which people die...you have (drum roll) bloodguilt!.
because the intellectual titans of the wtbts say that even though we are no longer under the mosiac law, the great principles still apply.. they have trotted out that argument on various occasions when they want to re-enforce the old law covenant while at the same time attempting to wiggle around the entire book of galatians: we're not under law, but we can be made to dance it its tune by playing the flute called "principle.
" (this from an organization that doesn't have any itself.).

There used to be a little known teaching of the Watchtower that
perfect men would not grow beards, hence the illustrations in
the publications from the 1920s to the mid 1960s of Jesus and Adam
both being beardless. See the Paradise book for some good examples
of this.Rutherford HATED beards!

Bravest Man in the World?
by JanH inpakistani president pervez musharraf made some comments that are sure to raise eyebrows everywhere.
speaking of the whole islamic world, he said:.
"today we are the poorest, the most illiterate, the most backward, the most unhealthy, the most un-enlightened, the most deprived, and the weakest of all the human race".

"Today we are the poorest, the most illiterate, the most backward, the most unhealthy, the most un-enlightened, the most deprived, and the weakest of all the human race"
Though he directed this statement to all Islamic countries, Pakistan
is a poor country, with many illiterate people, but yet, they
have nuclear weapons and missiles.Poorest? Uranium enrichment and weaponization of that uranium costs
BILLIONS of dollars!Illiterate? Most people in Pakistan cannot read, yet they have
a some scientists and engineers that can design nuclear weapons, and they have the technological infra-structure to build the weapons.Backward? Though having weapons of mass destruction, their society
suffers from lack of educational programs.Unhealthy? Public health programs are poorly funded. Uranium
minning and enrichment also are making the environment unhealthy
and dangerous to live in.Un-enlightened? Enlightenment does not come from the ability to
make nuclear weapons.Deprived? A Pakistani official said once "We will eat grass in order
to get nuclear weapons." The people are deprived as a result.Weakest? Though they can explode nuclear weapons, what else can they
do? What constructive activity? They are weak. The responsibility for the ill-state of the country, and the Islamic
people is with the governments and the policies. One can only hope
that they will change the course in which they are heading.--VM44

This is going to be good (although, everything Amazing writes is
good!)During the trial, did Rutherford, being the highly skilled lawyer
and former Judge he was, help prepare the legal defense for himself
and the other defendents? This would be interesting to know.At the very least, he could have used his training in shorthand
to take extensive notes for the defense team!If I recall correctly, ever time the topic of this particular
trial comes up, the WT makes sure to mention that the trial
judge was convicted for something in the 1930s. ("See? the judge
was corrupt! We had no chance for justice with such a judge!")Looking forward to the other parts in this series!

Parallel universes?
by sleepy ininteresting hozison programme on bbc2 last week about how new evidence is coming out that there may be parallel universes that are "needed " to explain our own.. once prominent physicist belives our universe "borrows" gravity from another universe.. but what really is happeing in physics , can it really tell us the truth about our universe?.
it seems that a lot of physics is philosophy.you think of an idea that could explain phenonoma and then see if you can make it work with mathamatics.. but as more and more complex theories are coming forward and are used to explain how the universe works it seems that any grasp on the truth of the matter is getting further and further away.when you start invocking parallel universes to explain things where do you stop?.
it seems that at least for now the universe is unexplainable.even without parellel universes you still cannot explain the origin of the universe , were it came from or why it is here.which ever way you go you get to a point in which you can never test or measure to see if you are right.. if there are parallel universes then do these need other universes to explain them?.

paralell universes? Our universe "borrowing" gravity from another
universe? fascinating! (but, what happens when our universe has to
"pay back" all the gravity it borrowed?}I think these theories are just that, they are theoretical
constructs used to explain reality, but you would like to have
reality explained by something that has real existence (no theories
with the earth resting on elephants and turtles!)The theoretical scientists need to keep working, they are still
far from having a satisfactory theory.I wished I could have seen the BBC program though, hard to view
it hear in California.--VM44
