  rodney stark was featured briefly in the short watchtower video exposing the benificial nature of "disfellowshipping" (which is a made up word that does not appear in the bible!).

  i found a 1997 paper that he wrote with larry iannaccone entitled, "why the jehovah's witnesses grow so rapidly.

  a theoretical application" and which was published in the journal of contemporary religion.

  i know of a presiding overseer who has recently got rid of the modem and internet connections on his pc.

  the reason given was that he didnt use it enough to make the monthly expense worthwhile.. but i wonder?.

  have there been any local needs items or talks recently about whether it is wise to use the internet?.

  this is an interesting story, published by harper's magazine in november 1998, about a boy scout who wanted to build a homemade breeder reator so he could get his atomic energy merit badge.

  he obtained radium paint from some antique clocks, thorium from latern mantles, and americum from smoke detectors.

  here are some excerpts from the article.. ignoring safety, david mixed his radium and americium with beryllium and aluminum, all of which he wrapped in aluminum foil, forming a makeshift reactor core.

He hid some of the material in his mother's house, left some in the shed, and packed most of the rest into the trunk of his Pontiac.

  I found the Watchtower quote that I was thinking of!

  We cannot but admire the high principles embodied in the League of Nations... Truly this is idealistic, and approximates in a small way that which God has foretold that he will bring about after this great time of trouble. - The Watchtower, 15 February 1919, p. 51.

  So the WT may not have been against the League from the beginning as they now claim. --VM44

  i just got my hands on william zellner's 1981 thesis, of another world, the jehovah's witnesses.

  the 124-page work was in partial fulfillment of the requirements for a ph.d, through the sociology department at south dakota state university.

  zellner's work looks at how the witnesses recruit new members and retains the converts the last part of his abstract says:it is argued that the social characteristics of a group are more important in the conversion process than in the group's message.. .

  The new "Generation" doctrine

  could someone explain to me how the generation doctrine changed?

  i know that originally they thought it applied to the generation of 1914 and i heard that it changed.

  i asked my dad to explain it to me but his explanation didn't make any sense to me - something like "a generation can last forever" ???
