GOOD NEWS!!! I know the sentence is light, but the more elders are made to face up to their sins, the sooner the society will feel the pressure to make changes. ( Of course, no one will ADMIT they're making changes, but at least there will be more protection for the children.)

Grand Jury Closing In On Molesters
by Pureheart inrole of bishops is now a focus of grand juries
by sam dillon
rosecutors across the nation have taken investigations of clerical sexual abuse before more than a dozen grand juries in recent weeks, stepping up their inquiries into whether roman catholic bishops endangered children by ignoring the crimes, prosecutors and church officials said.. district attorneys from phoenix to st. louis to long island are using the secret grand juries to obtain subpoenas for personnel records and other records from catholic dioceses and to compel the testimony of bishops and priests.

Surely it's just a matter of time before they start looking into other religions.

Quantum - "not one negative anti-mormon cl...
by alex_recovering_mormon innot one negative anti-mormon claim has stood up to scrutiny?
baloney - here is a list for your leadership to honestly respond to.
the lds church has no foundation of truth at all since the first vision is uncredible, the book of mormon & book of abraham are obviously fiction, the church plagiarized their temple ordinances, they are clueless on the nature of god, etc.

This is an interesting discussion. Sometimes it helps to be able to view a situation as an outside observer. This could easily be a discussion between a JW and a former JW. Change some of the details and the flavor or feel is pretty much the same. No offense intended, but are all religions really that far-fetched and unreasoning in their belief that THEY are the only ones with the truth? Funny thing is that all 6,000,000 witnesses would agree with Alex and shake their heads at Quantum, but not be able to see that they are no more than slightly altered versions of any other fundamentalist religion. The doctrines are different but the irrationality is the same.

I love the episode where Homer has a gun and Marge makes him promise to get rid of it, but he hides it in the vegetable crisper. Of course, Bart finds it and Marge catches Bart about to shoot an apple out of Milhouse's mouth. She's furious. Homer's excuse is awesome!
"I swear Marge, I thought you'd never find out!"

NCC reaches out to WTS / LDS !!!
by Amazing inon another front, a more slow and subtle change is emerging.
the national council of churches in the usa ( a member of the world council of churches) ... has made a policy statement regarding two 'cult-like' denominations: .
the church of jesus christ of latter day saints (mormon) and jehovah's witnesses (watchtower society).

What would be the effect on the rank and file if the WTS were to join the NCC? A woman who works with my dad was a member of The Worldwide Church of God before they made drastic changes in their doctrine. They were rather similar to JWs, no birthdays, Christmas, etc. She was thoroughly disillusioned. On the other hand, so many witnesses are new, I think it would be relatively easy for the society to introduce changes.
A year ago I would have laughed at the mere sugestion of the Wt joining the NCC. I might have questioned your sanity. But after having joined the UN, who knows? Is it any worse, from the WT point of view, to get into bed with Babylon the Great thanwith the wild beast?

The local branch getting nervous
by Liquidizer inour section on h2o has grown to a notable jw site in our language.
the site was mentioned at the district convention last weekend by mr. veikko leinonen, a local branch committee member.
during the convention the local ex-jw's had the first demonstration against the shunning policy and lack of religious freedom and expression among the jw's.

Hey Liquidizer,
Could you describe what it's like to be a JW and then an ex-JW in Finland? Actually, just describe what Finland is like! I'm an American, so I don't know much about the rest of the world. Heck, 3/4 of us can't find the US on a map if you take the names of the countries off!

Why did the society shut down it's radio station?
by voltaire inon an earlier thread about the wt's tv commercials i said that the society used the media before, more specifically i reffered to their radio station.
it seems to me that they quit using it because they were pressured to.
i remeber reading something, somewhere about the provacative, imflamatory nature of rutherford's remarks being the principal factor.

On an earlier thread about the WT's TV commercials I said that the society used the media before, more specifically I reffered to their radio station. It seems to me that they quit using it because they were pressured to. I remeber reading something, somewhere about the provacative, imflamatory nature of Rutherford's remarks being the principal factor. Another poster ( One) asked me to elaborate, but I can't for the life of me recall where I read about it. Was it Barbara Grizzuti's book? Or Penton's? I just don't recall. I'm fairly sure that the principal factor in shutting it down was not the society's "Jehovah was through using the radio station" spiel. Does anyone know where I read about this? Any help would be appreciated. In fact, Russel's sermons were carried by many newspapers. I'd be interested in knowing if there's any story behind why the society stopped that. Any historians?

It looks like the WT has started its long, probably slow, descent into mainstrean Christianity. The only reason the WT doesn't use the media is because they were pressured to quit using their radio station. That was probably due to the incredibly inflamatory nature of Rutherford's messages. Now they're going to try it again because they must "fight fire with fire". The fact that they're using the media is a victory for those who want the society to modify its behavior. I think they'll gradually be dragged into the mainstream.
