No big story, I was in my early teens and everyone around me was getting dipped. Why not me? Getting dipped is the fast track to respectability when you are young. What about minors not being competent to enter into a contract? Especially when the outcome of defaulting on the contract is so serious.

I realise that the name Ita Buttrose may not ring any bells with most of the people frequenting this board. Last Sunday WT study used a quote in the first paragraph from the Australian Womens Weekly a monthly (?) magazine here in Australia. As usual the quote was not referenced so it was a bit hard to find the original quotation but, it comes from an article from Ita Buttrose, a well known personality in Australia. Her credits at the bottom of the page state that she is a regular panelist on Beauty and the Beast and is the author of 4 books. Her novel. What is love, will be published soon. She also had a song written about her by the band Cold Chisel saying I believe, I believe 'cause Ita told me so.

I am disappointed that the society needed to use a quote from the womens weekly to support a study article. What is next, using the national enquirer as the authoritive source on extra terrestial beings?

Education Survey

education was strongly discouraged among the witnesses.

i am curious as to how many of you went on for further education and in what fields.

i will go ahead and list the ones i already know.. larc - advanced degrees in organizational psychology.

I grew up during the 1960' and 1970's. I could never blame the '1975 thing' as a reason for not getting a good education. I hated school and wanted to get out and make some money. The 'Big A' was a good reason for not continuing my education. I did not go back to study for many years. Now I have an MBA and manage a company that is quite successful. I am not sure that a degree is anything more than an example of being able to complete a course. It seems that the piece of paper gets you in the door but then it is up to you to show you can do the job.

More than just two Birthdays in the Bible!

the society, in defence of their stand against birthday celebrations, often state that the only two birthdays mentioned in the bible were of ungodly people and that harm resulted both times.. however, depending on which translation you use, there are at least five birthdays mentioned in the bible and, interestingly, these additional ones are all of jehovah's servants!.

even the new world translation has a third birthday celebration that jw's rarely, if ever, speak about.. .

please note that not all translations are accepted as 100% accurate by jw's and that i myself am not completely sure that these extra birthdays are truly what they seem - i simply state that they they are recorded there as birthday celebrations.. .

To give more credence to the thought that Jobs’ sons were celebrating their birthday we can look at Job 3:1-3

It is hard to argue against the fact that Job allowed his children to celebrate their birthdays.

I have been there twice this year, not bad (or good!) for an aussie. The last time I was there (after Sept 11) everyone was looking depressed because of the downturn in tourism. Tell me, which is more likely, me winning a million dollars on the slot machines or the Society getting a timeline right? Who would you back?

Different Types of Witnessing

i went to a district assembly in omaha back in the 1970's and got roped into doing street witnessing wearing one of those sandwich boards.

i felt like a complete idiot, but was talked into it by a jw girl i liked at the time.

anyway, i was wondering if anyone else here ever did this.

I was lucky, we did not have the sandwich boards, just hour after hour in the hot blazing sun offering the latest mags to uninterested people. That was back in the time that you counted only the time spent in 'fair dinkum' witnessing.
O, to go back to the old days......

i have been watching the wt/un issue unfold.

while i am personally disappointed with the limp response from the 'spindoctors' from the society i believe that we are flogging a dead horse.

many of the people who would leave the society over this issue are already at a stage that they only need the 'straw to break the camels back'.

I have been watching the WT/UN issue unfold. While I am personally disappointed with the limp response from the 'spindoctors' from the society I believe that we are flogging a dead horse. Many of the people who would leave the society over this issue are already at a stage that they only need the 'straw to break the camels back'. The rank and file would, at all costs support 'mother' and see the attention given to the UN issue as another reason to hold firm against the apostates. They usually see the people leaving as part of a sifting work, a la 1975. They were not serving for the right reason in the first place.

I am not supporting the society in this issue but I wonder what it will take to change their viewpoint?

The more we discuss this issue the more we ensure that it is viewed as 'apostate trash'

Judah Schroeder is not a member of the Helsinki Commission. If you look there is a comma between the helsinki commission and others who are involved. Having said that, it is highly questionable that any member of the Society should be involved with the 'world' in this way.

I am not supporting the society in this situation however I believe that making statements that representatives of the society are members of such organisations weakens the real arguments.
