Shaking Hands with Death - part 1
by Amazing inshaking hands with death: the one common bond we all share, even jehovahs witnesses, is death ... it lurks in the back of the head ... and most people dont think about it more than they are forced to when a loved one dies.
on monday, 5/28 i was forced against my will to meet mr. death, and have my first chat with him.. i would have expected to have profound and serious thoughts combined with the wise and sage advice of standing at the threshold of deaths door.
what i found was something most unexpected ... something that altered my views of life and death, yet once again.. the heart attack: it was a pleasant noontime.

JWs Kids Need Their Own Rumspringa
by Valis ini didn't see the show on hbo, but i read an article in the newspaper about the mormon custom of rumspringa.
basically its a period before amish youth/teens devote themselves to the religion.
apparently some return because they can't live without the support mechanism they have always lived around, some end up going to college, and some go totally crazy...it was funny..the pic in the paper showed a group of young amish women gettin tore up from the floor up...another amish youth was shown smoking a cig...and the elders apparently approve of this behavior before they commit to the ultra boring life of the average amish dolt.

I saw it.
It was the Showtime(?) program 'Devils Playground' about Amish Rumspringa on last night. My visiting daughter who lives very near Lancaster, PA. told me about horse & buggy area at Walmart and sure enough, it was on the show.
The huge parties in the fields/barns were fascinating to watch. It made me smile watching the girls in Amish dress, on cell phones, finding out were the next party was like typical teenagers.
Despite alcohol, meth, etc. usage, having modern conveniences, the show reported 90% return. Most missed "English" vices: cars, especially by men.
The Amish Rumspringa make JWs look controlling when it comes to baptism.

Great future Watchtower study question: What organization are we a loyal subject of? God's or man's?
Answer: Human!
They are tripping over their shoelaces, the spin was supposed to be human imperfection not human organization. Thanks for the admission.

Thank you all for your work and caring about victims. You enable abused JWs to speak out and now get more help. I hope the publicity will bring the Wt out of the dark ages, in their covering up abuse.
I was astonished their PR was to DF victims and their support group then continue chanting with old mag quotes. Its like watching someone show up to criminal court wearing a sloganed sandwich board as a defense.
May there be many who check out the facts. This is from another one who started asking questions after this scandal was brought to light for the public.

Alaskan XJW Speaks Out
by hillary_step ini am always intrigued by one major inherited wts trait that we all seem to carry around with us as xjw's, that is, the absolute desire to be right about everything at all times.
.
rather reminded me of this cartoon.....lol :.

Is the Alaskan XJW part of the cartoon or is there a separate story?

What "hooked" you?
by roybatty inim not sure if this has been discussed before but id be interested to read some comments from those who became jws later in life.
what caught your attention and sucked you in?.
my parents became jws when i was 5 years old, so it was pretty much the only way of life that i knew.
-
Wren
Introduced at age five but I was hooked on it until well into my twenties. Those with a weak stomach stop here.
I was one of the ones that, starting at age nine, would kneel and pray on my bed, for Jehovah to send the witnesses to my door each of the many times we moved. I'd pray with all my heart to keep up my study, go to the Kingdom Hall and progress "in the truth". My one interested parent(Dad) attended sporadically & never became active. They always found me and I'd say thank you to God for my answered prayers. I believed that to die because I was a JW would be the greatest honor.
My Hooks:
1. Youth. Could be persuaded that secular references were wrong if WTS said so. They were the God ordained authority. No need to question.
2. Life instability. I needed so badly all the answers in a simple package.
3. Some exposure but not much knowledge of other religions. Although poor, when with my Dad, we must have had every book the WTS published back to a set of Studies in the Scriptures.
#1-#3 is ditto to many in this thread.
4. "Worldwide Brotherhood" community.
5. They had that special "truth". All others are misguided.
6. No hellfire.
7. The earthly paradise with the animals was appealling as a child. It did not help that my Dad's side of the family were the same kind of crazy that Russell & Rutherford were, so JW's felt just like home. The stories I could tell if I posted to the excellent 'Quack' thread a couple days ago.
Everything from miracle health food cures, radium belts, nudism, greater JW spirituality through enema therapy, to large doses of paranoid conspiracy theories. Yep, you read it right, Watchtower Nirvana by way of bunghole. The other side of the family was normal except for the nudism part.
I was left home alone today. Somebody stop me.

***"Religion is a snare and a racket.."
by MacHislopp ini'm sure that many of you remember this kind.
of catch phrase used in the publications of thewtbs inc.. .. for the sake of clarity let's give some of the quotes from the.

Hi! This brought back a memory. Thanks for the research.
During the mid 70's, a Watchtower study article officially put to rest the then correct term to use of our 'faith' and began using the word 'religion' to describe JW's organization. It was big news in the KH I attended. I was corrected a few times about calling JW's a religion at the time, until the study article came out. Religion then became a good word and now applied to JW's.
I don't know if this has any correlation to the topic. I don't keep much of a WT library to find the study article.

How many found the REAL truth from the internet?
by Leander inif it was'nt for the internet i would still be stuck in the endless cycle of drone like meeting attendance and field service.
(technically i'm still in but not for long) i'm really glad that some ex-jws took the time to speak about the real truth.
for the longest time i always thought that what i was taught was correct, i never even felt the need to question it or validate it with actual facts.

Raise hand. I stopped most all activity mainly due to the "double bind" pressure, initially, by my 20's. Finding out the the real truth came from the internet.
Thank you again. To all the links found on this board: Freeminds, Silentlambs, AJWRB, all the quotes sites, Wt Observer. Also, all the sites with research on mind control, Steve Hassan books, Ray Franz COC.
I came here last, but this site started my research of religion in general. Thank you to all those that spent time & energy in publishing your work, part of which is a link here, Research on the Wt. Thanks to the many excellent sites I've visited. All my children have benefited too.
I'll never have the time, dedication, and skills to be a part of a board community like this. (It DOES require just those things, along with really caring, posting to educate or help heal). Just know that the quiet ripple effect continues. I wish there was a way to provide a WT "public service message" to places without much internet access.
Forgive me if I ramble but I wish to add here. To those that help, educate and heal here: At one point it was frustrating to read replies to trolls real or suspected. I got a picture of a professor in an argument with a mentally impaired, street person preacher, on a busy street corner. Now I see those replies are also to help all those reading, questioning, searching, "lurking".

You guys are too funny! If this site is for real, the system administrator will log on and think he is in a Gremlins movie after they multiplied and took over! OK, who started the Fred Hall thread "I love you all"? Good posts, but can't stop laughing.
