Thanks for bringing out well written archived material lately. It keeps this place great.
I saw, for the first time, the JW commercial last night, on a local station. They must be showing in all 50 states by now. It was the one of the mother comforting her child, who was fearful of terrorist type attacks, with a "love conquers all" type slogan at the end.
This topic brings home how that fear will be turned on children or anyone investigating JW's, to insure "faithfulness".

Worst watchtower you tryed to place!!
by haujobbz in.
the worst magazines i tryed to place was about 13 months ago i think 1 was the watchower on witchcraft and the other was the elderly commiting suicide.i thought how the hell am i going to offer this mag on witchcraft, i think i ended giving them to the pioneers,i mean what sort of presentation could i use with this witchcraft article i suppose i could of spoke about the blair witch project and tell them how c:@p it was,i mean i loved horror films.and to make things worse the magazine about the elderly commiting suicide "oh god" that was a bad one especially when i had to offer it at an old peoples home.
so anyone on here what mags did you find terrible to place.

So far weekend polls were for reading enjoyment but a library thread is irresistible.
In my time spent raised with "worldly" family; libraries, reading, the arts were considered church. I thank them for that. While in, I kept the non WT library down to about 200-300 and was quick to defend it against the rare criticism. The children had their own children's books library of 200-300 collected mostly from yard sales.
While in, the shelves carried reference, health, child rearing, natural history, biography, especially adventure biograpy, how-to manuals, some novels.
I'm still an armchair adventurer with library. I wish to see the day most books/archives are on cd and e-book loadable to further expand a portable library.

Should WTS Charge Interest?
by Amazing inwhen i first became accounts servant (before the elder/ms structure) i was surprised to learn that the watchtower society charged interest on kingdom hall loans.
the rate was 3%.
typical interest rates from commercial lenders on home mortgages at the time was about 6% to 7% ... i questioned the practice, and the jw man who turned to accounts records over to me made the point that inflation was about 3% or 4%, and therefore, the soceity was merely getting back the same buying power it had when it loaned the money ... and it beat bank rates, so he saw nothing wrong with it.

NameWithheld, thanks for info. We purposely tried to not get involved with WT building/real estate when we were in, although we are building contractors. Going back for another mortgage to people that, for the most part, are struggling financially & vulnerable, hit me as disgusting. Another tactic to maintain their real estate empire.

Finding ways of getting a new KH mortgage after the old one is paid off is new hard hitting news to me. How many ways can WT fleece a sheep!? I wonder if any cong. ever tried to fight it.

Why WTS Wants A Young Girl To Die
by metatron inhere we have a paradox - a mystery on which a life hangs.. the society dumped their new blood cards.
they write ambiguous replies to "questions from.
readers" about what blood products can or can't be taken.

Per topic: I was wondering also. Maybe the religious defense is a worthwhile protection with lawsuits in the U.S.? (I don't know how this would involve the Canadian case other than publicity)
Yesterday, I read at the Council for Secular Humanism's website, dangerous reading section, "Letting Children Die For The Faith" by Rita Swan. Parental crimes against children are not prosecuted as readily if the abuse is because of religious beliefs. The article sites recent child welfare laws that have religious exemptions, in some states, with shocking results and that small Christian Scientist groups have clout, too.
Slowly backing out of the blood issue while using the religious defense sounds like a plan.

Satanist kills JW father

plmkrzy, your so right it is difficult. It's hard to watch any person suffering with mental illness: schizophenia, delusions, depression, compulsions to name a few, have the illness intensify because of their religiosity.

This is horrific. If only he was helped sooner. He set the skull upon the Bible. It makes me wonder if its a statement of "This is your brain on Wt/religion" or he's paying his last respects to his father, in his thought disordered mind.
I know these type of topics seem a bit sensationalist but I'm one that reads them with interest. I have several relatives that are paranoid schizophrenic and violent. This includes obtaining firearms to use on anyone they feel are a threat when having delusions or hallucinations. I have other relatives with psychiatric conditions that require medication. I can think of ten right off, eight of them associated with JWs.
My adult daughter, dx with P. Schiz., on meds, lives with me long term. She is, how can I say, a human cult effect barometor. She does not believe many of the JW doctrines, but states she can not shake the fear of Armageddon or Gehenna and will attend the meetings every so often to relieve her conscience. We are careful not to oppose her. I try the 'care for your health & don't stress your self' approach which works the best for her mental & physical health.
Every time witness relatives show up, someone tries to "encourage her", she goes to a meeting, assembly, attempts FS, she starts in with the delusions and hallucination breaks with reality. She even talks about how its because she starts to feel so guilty and that she's not good enough. When she's away from the religious pressure she stays reality based.
All the witness relatives have shown up recently and news articles like this(it could have been my daughter) makes me want to vent. The trend I've seen with JW's in their ministry is "head in the sand" & not active encouragement of professional help in this location.

JFR - Blockbuster Words
by Amazing in... jfr sent a telegram to the book printer in hammond, indiana to cease all production of the finished mystery book ... at which time 100,000 copies were already printed ... and jfr had the plates with the objectionable pages changed.

and then ... jfr personally contacted the us attorney,

Was JFR not wanting to "fulfill prophesy" in jail anymore? Thanks for this research. Word to the wise, investigate a religion's history before handing over heart, soul, mind.
