a question for all to consider is: if pakistan and india go nuclear, as seems to becoming more likely by the day, how long will civilization be able to stay intact without completely unraveling, and during that interval will ridiculers be able to maintain the delusion that nothing out of the ordinary is happening in the world?

Anybody remember Chernobyl?

BIG difference between Chernobyl and nuclear weapons. Chernobyl was a conventional (pressure) explosion that blew tons of radioactive isotopes into the atmosphere.

The entire point behind a nuclear weapon is to have those very same isotopes (well, not the same, but you get the idea) completely transformed into energy instantly. The only radioactive 'fallout' is from the debris kicked up from the ground after the explosion, and the water vapor in the air displaced by the blast (which would minimize its city-levelling potential, so India and Pakistan certainly will have them go off higher against each other). Unless the bomb was set off and ground level or lower, the fallout would in fact be relatively very minimal.

Well I do, I remember a little more than a week after the accident a grey shroud and constant mist moved over Oklahoma (where I lived), it didn't go away FOR MORE THAN TWO SOLID WEEKS.

Uhhh...strange or not...you may rest assured that had nothing to do with Chernobyl. [8>] I'm sorry, that's just WEIRD thinking it did? Parts of the reactor were supposed to have fallen from the sky over Eastern Europe, but fallout never crossed the Atlantic. (Okay, so it did technically cross the Arctic Ocean, but never went further south than the very most Northern provinces in Canada).

By the way, aren't USA and Russias missile control systems still rigged to fire (against each other) when they pick up missile activity?

There is no centralized 'missile control system'. Indeed, it would be a critical failure of the nations defense if their was.

There is also no way to 'rig missiles to fire'. To fire a given missile requires presidential authorization (he gives the codes). Then, the codes are confirmed at each silo/sub. Then, on each silo/sub, 2 officers have to use 2 seperate keys simultaneously to release the missile controls.

Then, they can go through the process of making the missiles ready to fire (this takes time, too).

In short, nuclear missiles DO NOT fire as a result of an 'accident'.

That one works.

Wow...video quality is pretty poor. QT seems to do okay with the shots that have little movement, but all the panning shots just completely blur up.

Still, good to have. I'd be interested in the 25MB version someone else mentioned. Perhaps DIVX encoding? That usually comes out pretty crisp (well, relatively, anyway).

Letter Fedexed To All Congregations

my brother sent me this email:.

at the kingdom hall last night the po read a letter that the society had fedexed to all congregations debriefing the friends on the dateline program.

basically they said that jehovah's witnesses do not harbor, endorse or support pedophiles and every since 1997 they have instructed the elders to bring to the attention of the local authorities any person who was guilty of child molestation.

Dunno why - they had the time - but this smacks of short notice work.

No real though to damage control or diverting attention or anything (IE., not trying to make it a 'sign of the end', etc.). Just the standard, canned, 'apostates always lie whenever they open their mouths' defense.

It doesn't address any issues raised that the R&F will meet door to door, which is terrible planning because 'LIES, ALL LIES' won't go over well with the householder when they question the witnesses. All the householder has to do is ask 'OK, how many HAVE been turned in to the authorities?' Remembering that Dateline only had 2, and in both cases, the attacker was worldly.

The WTBTS obviously doesn't think the Dateline piece is any kind of threat, but why? With the ratings it got, surely they realize they are going to be facing a few tough questions door to door?

Using Quicktime 5.0.2 (not professional) nothing comes up. No audio, nada.

It does show the piece as ~20 min long, but I get not display of any kind.

i was able to digitize, and compress the entire dateline nbc show into the smallest file i could manage.

the sound is ok, the picture so so....but you'll get the full impact of the show.. the only program that i have that can send files is icq, so if you don't have icq, just go over to www.download.com, put icq in the search, install the latest version, get yourself a new icq number...and then add my number to your contact list.. my number is 161294253...or alternatively, you can find me under my e-mail address of [email protected].

(How on earth did you get decent picture and quality for a 20 minute or so segment in only 25MB? With quicktime, no less? I'm amazed - I understand the latest version of DIVX works compression wonders, but quicktime??. WOW)

Someone *really* needs to host this on an FTP site. 25MB is no problem from an FTP site - we have satellite internet at work, and it will pick it up in no time. Doesn't help over ICQ, though.
