  WT cultural imperialism?

  i've been thinking about americans.

  specifically about whether the wt, being an american dominated religion, forces american attitudes and culture upon other nations.. now, don't get me wrong, i'm not anti-american.

  living in canada i have a lot of contact with many americans.

  Well Grunt you found something we can agree on, I'm a big time Hornblower fan. I have to admit though that Richard Sharpe is giving him a run for his money at the moment. I met some Napoleanic re-enactors in London, outside Wellington's house, a few months ago. They were going to be participating in new Hornblower programs towards the end of 2000. I dont' know how long it will take for them to show up on PBS. What do you thing of Aubrey and Maturin?

  With regard to the cultural imperialism thing, I've seen quite a bit of it. There's a surprising amount of resentment about it in some countries, particularly the UK. Of course I've seen Brits do the same thing in other countries.

  About beards. This whole deal really runs back to the time of Rutherford. When he took over, a certain number of Bethelites grew beards in protest, ala' Russell. Almost no one knows about the original reason, it's just become a tradition. Ever since that time beards have been virtually verboten though I am seeing that crack in a few more places now, especially outside the US but a few places within the States have become more tolerant, of course the CO tends to go balistic when he comes around.

  If abstain means 'abstain' then that's the way it should be, 100% avoidance. If it doesn't mean 'abstain' and we've probably all heard the arguments, then it should be a matter of conscience. That's my opinion for what it's worth. The present situation is insupportable and untenable, consequently, it will be changed. It's being changed now, too slowly in my opinion but it is changing. The hemoglobin thing was enormous.

  i have made a couple of remarks regarding family dynamics on other threads, but i thought it's be nice to start a new thread.... i'm no psychologist, but suffice it to say i see some similarities here.

  (please add to/comment on these thoughts).

  For all the hair splitters out there, when I talked about softball nearly every weekend that was the congregation where I grew up, which seemed fairly evident from the thread. You guys get nit picky in a hurry when it suits you don't you? The rest of the time you just say "pass me another camel."

  To mommy, I don't need you advice about whether I post here or not so spare yourself the effort.

  To larc, they're so busy patting themselves on the head and back that I doubt any effort on my part would have any significant effect. Perhaps there are some serious mental problems running around here ) but mostly there's a lot of self-indulgence, at least that's my impression. I'm not too bad with people that actually have such problems, especially if those problems have been diagnosed by some kind of clinician, not very good with those that self-diagnose )

  My hat is off to those that got on with their lives and did something with it.

  As far as the wallowers go, you're your own worst enemy and you do and have done far more damage to yourselves than I or anyone like me ever could. I try to look at things the way they are not the way I want them to be, good or bad. You should try it sometime.

  This has nothing to do with empathy or sympathy, it has to do with the reality of people who build their lives on excuses. I have no sympathy or empathy for such people because I don't believe in enabling or empowering such attitudes.

  If you want to attack me personally, feel free to waste your time. It has zero effect on me other than to confirm my opinion of your character.

  Just in the interest of accuracy. I have lots of friends, inside and outside the organization and the only thing I'm bitter about is the tax structure of the US government.

  larc you'd probably like my congregation just fine. They might even like you. Oh, and this congregation isn't much for softball, it's more basketball and football, which is unfortunate because a lot of people aren't up to that.

  Question about disfellowshipping

  i have a question.... if the elders "catch wind" of something that could be a df'ing offense, and they ask for a judicial, if you don't show up or refuse to talk to them, can they disfellowship u in absence??

  if they can, is there any legal action that can be taken against it?.

  i've been threatened by my jw husband (we are separated) because i've met someone else...he is threatening to tell the elders i'm dating someone else ( though as of yet, no "fornication" has occured and it's long distance) if i don't write a letter of disassociation.

  Moody you can just walk. They can't do a thing without two witnesses and you're husbands unsupported allegation isn't good enough. Now, if you move in with someone and that can be proved, then that's a different story. Since you don't really care, what difference does it make?

  I've talked to quite a few HLC and PVT people about the blood issue and they pretty much agree that the subject as become so complex and confusing that rank and file members don't have a clue. Not their fault, it's just confusing and inconsistent.

  larc I wouldn't say changed beyond recognition. Fundamental doctrines like trinity, soul, hell, etc. haven't changed.

  You can slice it any way you like lady. How convenient for you that you came from a "strong" JW family. That way you've got someone to blame. That's what you're really look for isn't it? Someone to blame. The path of the slopey shouldered is such an obvious one.
