I've had 2 cars stolen, one here in Austin and one when we lived in Ft. Lauderdale. Other than that I've been pretty lucky. Have you considered taking some self defense classes Crumpet? Someone asked about mace I believe, what about that? I carry some around with me and keep another can in the house. I'm not worried about my stuff, but if anyone tries to mess with myself or my daughter they are gonna find themselves in a world of pain!

Crimewatch - LIVE at my flat! & Have you been a victim?
by Crumpet inso this is my 7th night living in my new place.
last night i was getting ready to watch crimewatch on bbc1 when i hear some strange noises out the back.
i take a look - there's two men breaking in to the flat next door but one - breaking the glass and then climbing in.. shortly after whilst i am still wondering if i really saw that - i am making a cup of tea and look out of my kitchen window and see a dubious character in a baseball cap trying car doors then stomping away and then coming back.

I did not watch the video nor read much of this thread, as I am insulted to be called 'stupid' in the thread title, simply due to my heritage and nationality. Likely there are as many stupid people [depending on your perspective] anywhere you wish to look, including your nation.
Jeff
I don't know I guess it takes more to insult me nowdays. The way I see it, I know I'm not stupid so he obviously isn't talking about me. Being in an intercultural relationship has also made me less quick to take offense until I'm absolutely certain offense was intended, most of the time it's usually a difference in language, humor or some such thing.
Bathroom humour gooood, Paraplegic humour baaaad.
They are both bad....you will see that eventually. I have faith.

Warning: Generalisation with Extreme Prejudice to follow...
From my own experience (on this Board, and from visiting the place) most Americans I've met take what you say literally before taking a second swipe at it to find the humour (the only caveat being in a situation where the circumstances are already humorous like at a Comedy Club or a conversation where the jokes have already broken out). It makes for a culture that is only a little more advanced than South Africa, on the "Humour scale". I find it ironic, because some of the funniest shows have come from that country. It's like its either switched on or switched off, rather than a steady flow from one to the other.
Nationalism is a serious business, and you'll be hard pressed to find an American who can consistently take the p*ss out of his own country with you, without him eventually getting his feelings hurt by taking it personally. I think it's to do with social conditioning from birth.
It can be endearing, though, when you crack a joke and they take a second or two to get it, before guffawing. Maybe Brits, and a few other nationalities, just start from the default position of anticipating humour, rather than switching to it. Gawd only knows how drab and dreary our lives would be if we didn't, after all we can't talk about the weather all day... can we???
..we can? Oh, yeah, we can!
just because we don't laugh at your jokes doesn't mean we don't have a sense of humor...we just might not find them funny
For the record, I don't get the bathroom humor brits seem to find so amusing.

It feels like emotional blackmail............
by troubled mind ini am probably being ultra sensitive at this time ......., but i am recieving sympathy cards from our old witness friends , and they are saying things such as : " when she wakes up she'll be looking for you .
" and " we also must be resolved to fight to finish loyal to jehovah even at great cost and pain.
she will be waiting eagerly to see her family after her resurrection.

It feels like emotional blackmail because it IS emotional blackmail. My sisters tried that one on me a few times. "what will we tell mom and dad when they wake up and you aren't there???" Sick, isn't it? And the sheer presumption that they have...who the heck are they to judge me and mine???
I've resolved if they try it again to turn the tables on them. "Don't worry when I see mom and dad I'll tell them not to blame you for the way you treated me, you didn't know any better cause you're in a cult"
Sorry you are having to deal with this.

"We never pass the plate, but...."
by dedpoet ini just popped on to the wts website (well, i am very bored, waiting for a workman to turn up here), and came across this piece of drivel from the "jehovahs witnesses - who are they?
" brochure.
i doctored it a little, to give the true picture.

Another JW fallacy regarding other religions, not all religions pass a plate and most of the ones that I have been to that do are very clear that they don't expect you to contribute unless you want to and no one looks at what anyone else is donating.
One of the reasons I tend to encourage people to at least visit a few churches after leaving the dubs is so you can shake off these type of beliefs along with other doctrinal stuff.

for the ladies
by sspo indid all of you "sisters" when you were single and growing up in the congregation .
always dream about marrying a bethelite or encouraged to marry one.
since they were viewed as "gods".. i remember many years ago single sisters constantly took trips to bethel with the hope .
-
Xena
There weren't any single bethelites in our hall, and we are a long way from the UK bethel, but I did hope to meet a really spiritual brother, pioneer, ms, elder, and get married to him
ditto
It never happened, and I'm happy it didn't now.
Well I didn't marry a really spiritual brother, pioneer, ms or elder either...just another borderline JW like myself.

Every last one of them has compromised their personal integrity
by jambon1 ini spoke with an elderly jw this week.
lovely woman.
kind and generous.. it got me thinking; they are'nt all bad?

No matter who they are, where they are, or why they do it - SHAME ON EVERY LAST ONE OF THEM!
So basically shame on all of us as well because at one time or other we did that same thing. Yea we quit but how long did it take us and what was the catalyst?
It's easy in retrospect to say "shame on you" but try putting yourself back into that way of life again. It's not easy to leave and it's not easy once you have left so far be it from me anyway to cry shame on someone else when I have no idea of what their life or circumstance is.
For the record I'm not a JW apologist, I just don't like broad brush condemation.
edited to add I didn't see narkissos post before I posted...didn't mean to repeat his thought in my first paragraph.
