Yeah, it's funny because we were encouraged to do that all the time; pray and then look up scriptures in the Bible to receive encouragement. But, then not too far back I remember a Watchtower article came out that said not to do that; that you had to do research in the WTS index or something and not to rely on just random scriptures. That's another thing I started noticing about the org and it really bothered me was the back and forth, schizophrenic nature of it. You really only notice it when you've been in it for awhile.

Easy to believe the FDS gets direction from God if you do this. Did you?
by Wasanelder Once inok how many of you while a jw took the advice to pray on a problem and then open the bible and start reading.
did you seem to get "just the right scripture" that answered your prayer?
they encouraged that where i was.

Being an elder is a second job. That's why I resigned since it was stressing me out too. I have more time for my family and myself. I'm glad more elders are quitting. Hopefully it continues and the org shivels up and goes away.

WTBT$ will no longer support Elder's legally....
by Newly Enlightened inwe received an email and are wondering if anyone can verify this little tidbit of news.
does anyone know if this is true or not?.
maybe any elder's on here?.

Figuring out that Watchtower wouldn't back me up legally was a big part of me deciding to resign as elder. There's just too much downside for this 'privilege'. I hope they lose more elders over this.

WT wants members to auxiliary pioneer in place of vacations now!!!

Wow, that is ridiculous. I do remember auxiliary pioneering being subtly encouraged during the month of the memorial and the summer since people have some time off but to explicitly encourage them to use their vacation time to pioneer is too much, IMO. People need a break.

scarcity and the watchtower bible and tract society
by hoser inscarcity value is the economic factor that increases an items relative price based upon it's relatively low supply.. .
toy makers and the apple corporation are masters at using this marketing tool.
create artificial shortages of a toy before christmas or the latest ipad and consumers will physically fight over these products and pay what ever the asking price is just to get their hands on it.

Yeah, and it only works the first couple of times. I noticed that there aren't that many that auxiliary pioneer during the month of the COs visit anymore since they found out the meeting is just a waste of time.

Do you think not having the book study in private homes has had much effect?
by truthseeker init's been a few years since the organization ended the book study arrangement in private homes.. gone was the last opportunity to have tea and biscuits and a natter with the friends afterwards.. do you think people regret losing the book study?
for some, it may have been the only time they were able to get some "associaton".

I think it's had a huge effect on the love and warmth that used to be among the friends. You really can't get to know anyone too well at the Kingdom Hall since there's usually too many people and too formal. I loved goodie night and the fact that it was only 1 hour and much more informal and relaxed. On the other hand, it's given people an extra night off away from the org and we know they are not doing family worship so the control is weaker, so that's good.

The Untold Story of Creation
by mynameislame inposted on behalf of jon p. .
http://www.jw.org/en/publications/magazines/g201403/untold-story-of-creation/.
i don't find the article itself very compelling but it seems to be opening up the possibility that a creative day is not a specific time period.

I like how they dismiss evolution yet admit those life forms have undergone great changes and have great variation. Isn't that what evolution is? I happen to believe there is a God that started the creative process but then used evolution to take over. It seems like Watchtower is kind of admitting the same thing without admitting it. They want to appear like they agree with science yet they have to be different simply to be different. It's interesting that this article says the creative days could have lasted thousands of years because I thought the last time they talked about this they said the creative days could have been millions of years long.

Were you a minor when you were baptized

Yes, I was 16 when I got baptized and I thought I was taking my time since there was so much pressure and there were other kids who had gotten baptized younger than I was; one at 13 and the other at 9. So, at the time I thought I was mature enough but now I know better and I should have waited until at least 18 and probably 21, since in the US you're not legally an adult until 18 but you can't even drink alcohol until 21. What if I was anointed at 16? I couldn't partake of the wine to show I was part of the covenant with Jesus. The whole baptizing kids is not right. It's hypocritical too since the Watchtower likes to say they don't do infant baptism but they sure like to baptize little kids. What's the difference?

I had the misfortune to go to yesterdays meeting and noticed the contradictory watchtower article as well. It seems like the writing is getting more schizophrenic. It seems like the articles are all variations of the same few themes now too; obey the gb and the end is soon. I remember there used to be a few articles every once in a while about Jesus, his qualities, and the fruitage of spirit, how to be a good Christian, etc. But that was like 10 years ago or more. Now it's all about apostates.

Special Assembly Day - tepid applause
by sir82 injust got back from a recent sad.. after most talks, the applause was, at most, tepid.. it was striking in its tepidity, if that is possible (and if that is a word).. affter most talks, applause lasted literally no more than 5 seconds.
its volume was scarcely above a whisper.. it wasn't acoustics - the bethel speaker was technically a polished speaker (although presenting the same old boring info), and his talks generated noticeably louder applause.
but even still - that applause was maybe 10 seconds, and about normal-conversation level.. but local speakers - the applause was not much more loud than the hum coming from your refrigerator.. there were 1300+ people there.. it was just so weird - my previous large-group experience was at the agm, where people were nearly apoplectic & drooling with delight over their new "silver bibles" (which very few have read, i'd wager).. these guys were just "zombified".. speaking of bibles - bethel dude called it a "platinum bible".

That's what I noticed too. Over time, all the fun has been removed from the org. I used to enjoy the goodie nights after book study. And it was more informal and relaxed. We had cong. picnics too which were fun. Now it's all about how much time are you putting in service. Everything is a chore and there is nothing to look forward to. The last big assembly I went to was the annual meeting which had a lot of applause so I will have to see how the circuit assembly goes this year; if the applause is less.
