i flat out asked the jw i'm studying with what she would do if someone was disfellowshipped and she was honest and said she wouldn't talk to them since they wouldn't be good examples of jehovah witness.

then we started talking about appearances and tattoos, and about my pink hair :) and she said it didn't matter.

i am enjoying reading and visiting this web site but i am just not seeing the same things you guys have.

It is possible to be DF'd yourself for talking to a DF'd person. As to your appearance, when and if you start going to meetings there will slowly but surely be pressur eput upon you to conform to the norm of the congregation. If you don't you'll be viewed as spiritually weak and though not shunned, you'll be avoided have no priveleges, etc.

Start asking the hard questions. Get info from both sides. Get Ray Franz's books, "Crisis of Conscience" and "In Search of Christian" Freedom

Christmas Star = Satan?!

i was talking with my husband the other day about the jw's belief that the "christmas star" that guided the magi to christ was the doings of satan.

he didn't believe me; this is what i found in the "my book of bible stories" (copied verbatim from cd-rom).

who do you think made that new star to shine?

It was quite skillful the way you avoiding talking about the comparison between Satan USING the tree and Satan USING the star as opposed to Satan creating either one of them. Still, I'm calling you to task on it.

Further, at least in my arguement I can show SOME TYPE of scriptural reference even if you disagree with the Interp. As it is, the jews see this as a Messianic prophecy.

As far as the Magi not seeing Christ as King of the World, well they did worship (obessience if you must) so they did recognize the kingly authority Jesus bore over them.

Should it be so mysterious that the Magi didn't full understand as most of Israel didn't either?

There is NO BIBLICAL evidence that supports the JW position on the issue. You've accused me of using scripture out of context, a trait the Society is famous for.

I'm calling you on this one. You said,

It only stands to reason that Satan was the source of the Bethlehem Star, so-called. Afterall, it led to an attempt being made upon the life of the very person that was destined to stamp the Serpent in the head. The same prophecy shows that the Serpent was to be the first to inflict injury ... but the injury the Serpent would receive would mean permanent death.

Fri, this makes as much sense as saying the devil planted the tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil because it lead to the down fall of man and the corruption of God's creation.

No sir, Satan was NOT the source of the Star, it was God. He used it to announce even to the gentiles that Messiah had come. Isaiah 60:6 foretells the coming of the Magi. Just because Satan then tempted Herod doesn't mean that Satan was the source. Satan has a knack for taking the things of God and tempting man with them (i.e. the Tree mentioned above).

I also think it's noteworthy that the Magi, gentiles, were the first to acknowledge Jesus as KING.

Accuracy of Bible Translation

i am trying to find out more on the translators of the jw's bible.

they claim and so it claims in the front of their bible that it was translated by experts in greek and hebrew.

what training if any did these people actually have in these ancient languages.

Yes, the society provides CLEAR reasons for including the Divine name in the NT, but these are HARDLY incontrovertible. In fact, the Society's position is HIGHLY suspect.

Scholar, feel like tackling the Starous verses cross issue I mention above??

Are These the Last Days?

does anyone who has left the organisation still feel that these are the last days?

all down through history people have wanted to feel that they live in special times - are jws just an extension of this?

for me the biggest problem with this theory of the last days has been the distinct lack of earthquakes since 1914, a quote from the book signs of the times revisited says "as more and more seismographs are installed in the world, more earthquakes can be and have been located.

Thanks for the great site on Earthquakes, it would have come in handy yesterday at the meeting when the speaker of the public talk said that Earthquakes have been on the increase since the 1960's. Can't wait to show this site to my step-son. Thanks.

The WTs Biggest Deceptions

i was just wondering what do the members of this board think the biggest deception in the teaching of the watchtower society is?.

one of the biggest deceptions for me, one that stuck like a thorn in my side was their deception on earthquakes, hence my previous thread on the last days.

the wts, as i recall, published supposed proof of the increase in earthquakes since 1914. i was so angry when i found out that this was an outright lie.

As seen from the outside, I guess the claim that they speak for God, denial of the trinity and eternal hell, those are the things that drove me away from being an "interested one". The Maliwi/Mexico deal figures in pretty heavily too.
