Simon,
Yes, an oversight on my part, Gorbachev must be included...but to say he was MOST responsible...can't go that far. It took a combination of all four of those figures...and Lech Walesa, and others too.
it is quite remarkable how people who've done nothing to really further the cause of peace seem to win the nobel peace prize.
the most glowing insult to the integrity of what this prize should stand for, was best demonstrated with its awarding to yasser arafat, the father of modern day terrorism.. .
although i've never heard of one instant where arafat purposefully placed his life or well being on the line in face to face combat, he has literally sent thousands to their horrible deaths.

I think Reagan's presidency did mark a change for the US and not one for the better. We're paying the price now for the mistakes made by him.
Simon, once again you prove you have no understanding of Politics or Economics...NONE!
There are THREE people responsible for the fall of the Communist Bloc, Reagan, Thacher, and Pope JP2.
The US went from financial ruin to a booming economy because of Reagan's policies...he more than doubled government revenues his 8 years in office while cutting taxes...yep...what a failure whose policies we are paying for today.
Oh, EXCELLENT point about Arafat getting the Nobel Peace Prize but not Reagan...that organization hasn't had any credibility in AGES! And you are correct, Yassir is GREAT at sending others to their deaths without risking his own skin.
.
only choose those with thick skins that won't take offense and give your reasons why you chose these individuals.. from me, tis chevy, sassy, bisous, sunnygal41 and talesin
I made the list, I made the list...woohooooooo!!!!
SofJah, YouKnow, Fred Hall, Realist, and Simon top my list (just kidding Simon)
well, after the adventures with my dad i'm back at the grind stone.
it's been seven days since i've had a cigarette...woohoo.. we get the day off tomorrow....to mourn pres reagan...the whole army is shutting down it seems...i had to keep my students late tonight and again on monday to catch up...they don't give me extra days when they borrow time from us this way.. one of my students is the neice of kofi annan...i thought that was kinda neat.. i miss being home with my dad...i didn't miss work, but now that i'm in the thick of it again...i like it.
it's just all the darned paperwork and anal retention in this place i dislike...i love teaching though.. .
copsec,
I'm a bad boy, I was spending quality time with my Dad and got so caught up in it that I ignored everything else I had planned...sorry....I am interested in you November idea though.
i have just returned from spending a week in the company of frenchbabyface, (fbf) and would like to share some basic observation that i feel will enlighten my fellow countrymen and women about a people we, as a culture, actually know very little about.
i do believe the medias of both countries do not show their people an honest and forthright view of the other countries people.
the american media gives us almost no news of france and most of what we do get is not very positive.
I've never had a bad experience with the French people. The times I was there I did not find them rude, nor obnoxious, nor arrogant...nor stinky....I found them interested, interesting, and willing to reach out and help (no not Lady's of the Evening, but regular real people). I had a great time in France every one of the four times I've been there, twice to the tourist areas, and twice to the less traveled areas. How I view the French Government is quite different though.
just recently, npy and myself were at a party and the subject came up as to how we knew six.
i found myself hesitate to explain that our connection was that we had all been jehovah's witnesses.. after i told them...it was no big deal.
they all explained how they had been penecostal and catholic and they had their abusive stories to tell... we were all the same.. .
Willow,
I both agree and disagree with you...and I'm not sure how I feel about ambiguity either....
The difference with the X dubs and X Catholics and Pents is that NORMALLY the Catholics and Usually the Pent family doesn't disown the X, where as Normally and Usually the Dubs do disown the X.
ok. this is a minimus type question.
if god, the president, or whoever in a high authoritarian position offered the governing body one choice between two scenarios, which would you think they would pick?
and they must pick one of the choices.. choices:.
Country Girl,
Good Catch. I didn't realize the other text was there. #1 would be their option.
did you love him, hate him or not care one way or another because at the time you were "neutral"?
Tres,
I heard about it, but doubt it will happen. I wouldn't be suprised to see his face on some coinage though. Hey, in lew of Clinton on Mount Rushmore can we just put him on a milk carton?

Been there, done that, got the T'shirt. I was part of the 50th Anniversary of the Airborne celebration in 1990. Marched in July for Bush 41.
